2 His marriage broke up and his wife took their two sons to Australia, hence the card from Norman the younger of the two. Captain Turner remarried eventually and continued to serve Cunard, he was in command of the IVERNIA when she was torpedoed by U47 near Cape Matapan. on New Year's Day 1917, Again he escaped and finally retired, eventually returning to live in Liverpool. He travelled to Australia but failed to meet up with his family as they had moved to Canada by this time and he never got to see them again. Finally he died in Norman Henry, the writer of the card, was a 22 year old school teacher when he enlisted in Western Australia on as a provisional corporal in the 5 th reinforcement for the 28 th Infantry battalion, he left Fremantle aboard the Themistocles (A32) in October 1915 as part of convoy 12 so the card was written soon after he landed in Egypt. In April 1916 he was confirmed as Corporal and went to France with the 4 th Divisional Ammunition Column, in November he was posted to the cadet's school at St John's Wood and the following April he was commissioned as a 2 nd Lieutenant and joined the 4 th Trench Mortar Battery. He was gassed in August 1917 and finished up in the 3 rd General Hospital at Treport, in mid 1918 he was invalided back to England and finally returned to Australia aboard the BREMEN in June COPYRIGHT. 3 ANTARCTIC STAMPS Australia Post was asked in the 1950 s by a member of the Government to consider issuing special stamps for the AAT. This was to reinforce our countries claim to our part of Antarctica, so it is no surprise that the first stamp, the 2/- blue, which was issued in 1957, shows an earlier flag-raising ceremony in the Vestfold Hills area. Only seven AAT stamp were issued in the pre-decimal period and a great many were put away by collectors even today they are not scarce or expensive in mint or used condition. A set is shown nearby as well as stamps showing the old Aurora and the Aurora Australis. NEW ADVERTISING BOOKLETS I was fortunate to obtain a few new advertising sequences recently - also an outstanding variety. As most dealers will agree, it needs patience and good basic knowledge to find these differences. The variety I refer to above was sold by me as Edition Missing and with my eyesight which is average, it was completely missing. However, my customer, a younger man tells me that it was really an albino print. The printer had struck but no ink showed. The name of the printer was completely missing. I think the catalogue number is B123CT as the advertising sequence was the same as B123Cf. Two other specials I found were B101Ai and B104Ai, both of which had the first insert page doubled. As well B104A; had a new sequence ! Another two new sequences were 132Cl and B139Ag. $4.10 CYCLING BOOKLET has not been listed with part perf margin in the booklet s original printing. Pert perf reprints are known 1K, 3K & 4K. 3 Koala, third reprint has the distinction of having some panes imperf, left hand (value over $200) and imperf, right hand (value around $25). Bryan Young, well known Victorian collector and for many years, major contributor to Australia Post s Technical Details, phoned to tell me of a $4.10 Cycling First Day Cover. This FDC booklet pane he had recently obtained was Part Perf! MINISHEET EXCLUSIVE TO 2011 AUSTRALIA POST YEAR BOOK - Early in 2011 Australia Post released a Charity Sheetlet for the Queensland Premier s Flood Relief Appeal. Each sheet had ten self-adhesive stamps - two sets of five stamps and the sheets measured 105 x 191mm. The sheet exclusive to the 2011 year book is quite different with a photograph of the city while inundated and the set of five stamps. On this sheet they are gummed stamps! 4 QUERY 741. WHERE WAS BASE POST OFFICE No. 8? A response from Gary Watson (1116). Re Indian Advance Base Post Offices, the item illustrated raises a couple of questions that need to be addressed before a sensible answer can be given to the enquiry. Firstly is it really an ABPO No 8 cds, or is it No 9? Secondly, and just as importantly, is this item really dated 30JUN45 (obviously not 30JAN as in the hand-drawn version)? From the photocopy I am unconvinced on both points. According to Ted Proud in "History of the Indian Army Postal Service Volume III: ", No 8 ABPO was at Shaibah in Iraq between March 1943 and April It then left for Italy but stayed only two weeks before being re-embarked for India on 25th May Five weeks later it was probably back in India but usage of the cds in this latter period is unlikely, and unrecorded. In fact, Proud's late date for any of the No 8 datestamps is 5APR45. Based on these factors, I think it is highly unlikely that the cds is No 8, especially if the year of use really is No 9 is far more likely to be correct. No 9 Section BPO arrived at Colombo (Ceylon) on 4/5/1942. On 25/8/1942 it was redesignated No 9 Advance Base Post Office and remained at Colombo until well after the end of the war, closing only on 1th July I don't have full records of the relevant Unit Censor (not "Sensor") and Field Censor markings but I can say that both markings are of types that were used in Ceylon. In fact, I do have a cover of 7OC/44 from British FPO 366 (during the 6 week period of use in Ceylon) that also bears a fine strike of the same triangular 'FIELD - CENSOR/ 65 ' cachet that appears on Mr Proctor's postcard. The pig islanders outnumbered us by about two to one. But it was a good meeting and the displays were worthy of the occasion This month s cover is a recent addition to my collection, a military envelope unusually sent to a troopship and what is more unusual is that it is sent to a homecoming troopship, presumably to welcome home the addressee. The Staff Sergeant in question had served with the 6 th Field Ambulance in Gallipoli and France, and was coming home for demob as a nursing orderly on board the SS Medic (A7) A section from another cover that I have just won in auction is shown below, unfortunately apart from the PASSED BY CENSOR. the RECEIVED FROM HM SHIP/NO CHARGE TO BE RAISED and the red cross logo on the reverse there is no date or indication of where the cover was posted, it is addressed to Wales. Any information would be appreciated. The censor mark is obviously made up from the de Vinne font and could be variation based on CM.50 in the supplement to Bob s book. I m not even sure it is WWI. 6 2438. NEWSPAPER POSTAGE PAID HANDSTAMPS by Colin Salt (1269). My interest in these markings was triggered by the acquisition of the wrapper illustrated at Fig. 1. The handstamp at bottom left reads Newspaper Postage Paid at Parramatta N.S.W. AU The Lake Bathurst c.d.s. is something of a mystery as it is not near Auburn, Parramatta or Michelago. The earliest Post Office regulations I have access to is dated 1935, and paragraph 724 reads: Except in cases where authority has been given to the proprietor or publisher to place an imprint on the wrappers denoting that postage has been paid, the wrappers of newspapers and periodicals posted at bulk rates must be stamped with the Paid at datestamp, or, in the absence of a Paid at datestamp, with the Paid at stamp and the office date-stamp. The following illustrations are all examples of other newspaper handstamps indicating fairly widespread use within New South Wales.
