The collections are generally sparse or patchy to 1960s with the early material in very mixed condition, however the 1970s to mid-1990s issues show a better degree of completion. The albums alone are worth a fair proportion of the estimate. From the period of no handstamps. [Charles Price was a prominent Congregational minister & temperance advocate. Price reached Launceston (for the second time) on 29/4/1836 so this letter is from immediately after his arrival. He speaks of asking "the Governor for a piece of ground for a Chapel...I shall leave no stone unturned to get a Chapel as soon as possible"] FRENCH POLYNESIA - Postal History C B GIBRALTAR 629 C B GREAT BRITAIN Lot brief entire headed "Janry /Huahine" & signed "Chas Banff" with fine '[crown]/general POST OFFICE/18AP18/1833/SYDNEY' datestamp on the face, equally fine 'India Letter/Gravesend' b/s across the flap & London arrival b/s in red. Another very early letter. [By the time this letter reached England, Banff & John Williams had left Polynesia for Samoa where, in 1836, they were eaten by cannibals!] trio comprising 1) stampless entire to Portugal with '45' h/s; 2) outer to Italy "col Vapore Crimean" with GB 2d tied by light 'A26' & very fine 'VIA/DI MARE/(E)' h/s in red; & 3) outer to 'GRANADA' (b/s) with Spanish 4q (a little cut-into) tied by largely very fine '63' of the Spanish PO at Gibraltar, French 'SAN ROQUE/CADIZ' transit cds on the face. Ex Vic Bullock. (5 items) Offer Ex Lot C group of convict-related letters on exhibit pages including 1759 entire with very fine Bishop Mark from a prisoner awaiting trial (he was sent to the American Colonies); 1799 entire letter (carried per favor) from Richard Coleman at Newgate Prison (he was sent to Botany Bay in 1800); 1802 entire letter from the Earl of Worcester & signed "Worcester" on the face advising a petition on behalf of a felon has been rejected; 1829 part-entire headed "Justitia Hulk/Woolwich" (most of the letter missing); 1831 entire from the Keeper of Monmouth Gaol claiming expenses re Edmund Marsden (sent to NSW for life); 1833 entire from Edward Hardy at Newgate Prison (he served 14 years in convict hulks at Bermuda); 1834 letter re death of Surgeon John Isatt aboard the "Susan" bound for NSW; etc, condition a bit mixed but generally fine and attractive. 11 Prestige Philately - Auction No 153 Page: 11 NEW GUINEA - Mandated Territory Issues 758 C C Lot commercial cover from GB to "New Guinea Goldfields Ltd/via Salamaua", readdressed to Wau with 'POST OFFICE/WAU' cds in violet & endorsed "Try Salamaua again" in red, further endorsed "Left Territory/address unknown/return to/sender", boxed 'UNCLAIMED/AT RABAUL' twice on the face & again on reverse, boxed 'NON RECLAME/UNCLAIMED' presumably applied at Sydney DLO (cds also on the reverse), a bit knocked-about & part of the back missing. An appealing cover despite the faults. [Note that all mail into Wau & Salamaua was carried by air, for no additional fee. The addressee, the artist RH Vigor, made a series of sketches of the New Guinea interior] 600
