1 Prestige Philately - Auction No 172 Page: 1 General and Miscellaneous Lots 18 E A Lot 18 BANKNOTES: c.1966 $1 original artwork on two pieces of banknote-size art-paper both affixed to a single piece of cheap card (175x278mm), the obverse featuring Maori chief, carvings and outline map of New Zealand, and the reverse featuring a flock of sheep ("GLENTANNER STATION CANTERBURY"), kiwi & coat-of-arms, the key motifs beautifully hand-painted in shades of ochre & red and highlighted with Chinese white, minor damage to the De La Rue imprint on the reverse otherwise superb! A beautiful but unadopted design King George V Issues SG ,000T 239 P A+ Lot 239 H Linley Richardson's unadopted design 1d die proof in rose-pink on glazed card (45x61mm). Superb! Ex Sir Gawaine Baillie. [This is the amended design as issued for the 1935 Pictorials 6d value. Apart from the inscriptional variation, the introduction of the Tiki columns at the sides is almost exactly the issued design: only the denomination was redrawn] 350T 275 E A- Ex Lot Stamp Design Competition handpainted essays in watercolour & Chinese white comprising ½d Coat of Arms and ½d Sheaf of Wheat both in emerald; 1d Sheep & Cow and 1d Mountain & Waterfall both in dull red; and 1½d Map of New Zealand and 1½d Sheep Farm both in bright blue; all on thin artboard fashioned into recessed frames, endorsed on the reverse including "HAMILTON" (the pseudonym of Harold Nelson), the mounts a little aged otherwise a very fine and attractive group. (6) 3,000T 276 E A Ex Lot Stamp Design Competition surface-printed versions of essays by CH & RJG Collins for 6d Wairua Falls in blue and 1/- Sutherland Falls in blue-violet. [Entries comprised a large-scale line drawing in India ink, a reduced surface-printed version - as here - and a stamp-size photographic reproduction. RJG Collins was one of the most prominent NZ philatelists of the time. One of his designs - for the 1d Kiwi - was adopted for the 1935 Pictorials] (2) 200T

A magnificent exhibit page. 5 Prestige Philately - Auction No 172 Page: King George VI Issues SG P A Lot Centennial vertically se-tenant stampsize photographic proofs of James Berry's essays for 1) ½d Arrival of Maori, 1½d Abel Tasman (with the central vignette replaced from a different sheetlet in scarlet) & 2½d Immigrants in yellow-brown; and 2) 4d Flag Raising, 8d Transport & 5d Gold Mining (with the central vignette replaced from a different sheetlet in grey-green). Important developmental proofs for this key commemorative issue. [James Berry was responsible for 10 of the 12 issued designs] 287 E A Lot Centennial original artwork for ½d "Arrival of Maoris/about 1350" in India ink & Chinese white on thin artboard (246x152mm) in a recessed frame (352x278mm), with three stampsize photographic reductions in balck & white, emerald, or emerald with grey-green vignette inserted all affixed below, pencilled endorsements including "Envdeavour" (James Berry's pseudnym), non-contemporary ballpoint signature "J Berry". [This is probably James Berry's most evocative stamp design, portraying the relief and delight of the Maori on finally sighting land at the end of their arduous and epic voyage across the Pacific] 1,500T 288 E A Lot Centennial similar original artwork for 9d Timber Industry in India ink & Chinese white with the central panel being a separate photographic piece, with five stampsize photographic reductions in black & white x3 (slight differences), brown or brown with grey-green vignettes inserted all affixed below, similarly endorsed & signed, minor blemishes on the frame only. (14 items) 1,500T 292 E A Ex Lot Proposed Royal Visit original artwork for two horizontal 3d designs & smaller 3d & 5d designs all executed entirely in pencil on thin artboard (345x285mm, & similar sizes), each with a stampsize photographic reproduction affixed below, James Berry's pencilled notations in the margins & non-contemporary ballpoint signatures "J Berry". A really beautiful group that highlight James Berry's skills as a graphic artist & portraitist. Ex Sir Gawaine Baillie. [The Royal Visit was cancelled due to the king being unwell. This group is notable for including portraits of Princess Margaret, who was to accompany her parents. One of the most beautiful items in James Berry's entire body of work, and an ideal frontispiece for a collection of the current reign. Ex Marcel Stanley and Sir Gawaine Baillie. 1,500T 301 E A Ex Lot Anniversary of the First Trans-Tasman Flight preliminary artwork comprising three original handpainted essays (205x128mm or 128x205mm) by James Lyle 1) Biggles-like "Smithy" - apparently based on a photograph of Jim Nabors - & the "Southern Cross", horizontal; 2) a more believable "Smithy", the "Southern Cross" & a modern airliner, horizontal; and 3) "Smithy" in RAAF cap & the "Southern Cross", vertical; all in shades of blue highlighted with China white on artboard (310x257mm), labelled "Comprehensive 'Rough' for Finished Line Original"; also James Lyle's original handdrawn portrait for the final design & line-drawing of the "Southern Cross" both in India ink highlighted with China white on artboard (237x296mm or 300x245mm); finally four photographs of the essays. Ex Reg Ferguson & Derrick Ray. An important group. Because this was a joint issue with Australia, the preliminary designs are relevant to the Australian issue even though they are all inscribed 'NEW ZEALAND'. Richard Breckon has confirmed that there is no preliminary artwork for the Joint Issue in the Australia Post Archives. However, several die proofs inscribed New Zealand are held by Australia Post. This supports our vendor's contention - with which we agree - that all preliminary designs can properly be treated - and exhibited - as Australian material. Here are two golden opportunities to own rare developmental proofs for the key value, and more besides, for a fraction of the price of that one mint stramp] (5) Antarctic Expeditions and Ross Dependency 1,000T 379 E A Great Barrier Island Pigeon Post Lot 379 ROSS DEPENDENCY: c.1955 original artwork for 1d QEII Portrait in India ink, pencil & Chinese white inscribed 'NEW ZEALAND' but with pencil endorsement "Design used later for Ross Dependency", on art paper (268x262mm), non-contemporary ballpoint signature "J Berry". Ex Marcel Stanley and Sir Gawaine Baillie. [James Berry designed the Ross Dependency /6d QEII, for which the portrait offered here was reversed] 385 E A- Lot 385 GREAT BARRIER PIGEONGRAM AGENCY: 1899 Triangles 1/- essay in bright carmine on ungummed wove paper, tiny thin in the left-hand margin. A highly significant item for the collector of pigeon mail. Ex Oded Eliashar: stated to be "probably unique" (at least two other examples are recorded). RPSofV Certificate (2008) states "one shilling essay...is genuine". [NB: The issued stamps were inscribed '1/ ' at the top. The essay is inscribed 's/1'] J Reg Walker, at page 63 of his 1968 work, unfortunately and incorrectly states that this item is a "counterfeit" or "forgery". However, in an appendix to the same book, Henry Goodkind states: "After studying all of the aforementioned opinions...i have concluded that [it] is an essay or a trial printing...it is inconceivable to think anyone would be so stupid as to incorrectly copy the denomination". 2,400
