4 Se Up Role Cards Aboliionis Cards Randomly shuffle and deal a Role Card o each player. Your Role Card feaures he Benefis and Special Acions you receive during he game. Find he corresponding Player Ma and place your Role Card on i. There are ypes of Aboliionis Cards: General (an), Reserve (whie) and Opposiion (red-orange). As he game progresses, players will be able o access cards from he oher Periods. Deal cards from he firs Period Deck and place hem on he open spaces of he Aboliionis Queue on he game board. During seup, here should only be one Opposiion Card. If a second Opposiion Card appears in he queue, se i aside and coninue filling he queue from he op of he deck unil he queue is full. Then reshuffle he deck, including any Opposiion Cards ha were se aside. The Slave Cacher Die picures he slave cacher colored symbols and deermines which slave cacher moves. The Movemen Die picures whie and black arrows o deermine he direcion and disance he slave cacher moves. During he Slave Cacher Phase, he lead player rolls boh dice. If he symbol of he walking slave is rolled, hen none of he slave cachers move and he phase ends. Proceed o he Planning Phase. If a slave cacher s symbol is rolled, check he Movemen Die o see he direcion and disance his slave cacher moves. The whie arrows indicae weserly movemen and he black arrows indicae easerly movemen. These arrow symbols are also picured along he colored Slave Cacher Pahs on he game board. The appropriae slave cacher marker is moved he same number of spaces as he number of arrows on he Movemen Die or unil i reaches he end of is pah. 6 are placed consecuively on he Slave Marke Cards, beginning wih he boom card and coninuing upwards, cycling around o he boom Slave Marke Card again if necessary. Afer a slave cacher has moved and any capured slaves have been placed on he Slave Marke Cards, all players proceed o he Planning Phase.. Planning Phase During he Planning Phase, each player may ake up o Tokens from he Token Board. A he beginning of he game, players may only ake okens from he firs Period (00-). When fuure Period Columns become acive, players may ake okens from any of he acive Period Columns. All players may ake okens during he Planning Phase a he same ime. A oken may only be aken if he player has enough money available, players may no give or lend money o each oher. Since he game is cooperaive, players may discuss sraegies and offer suggesions. If he players are no able o come o an agreemen on a oken choice hen he lead player - or he player closes o he lead player in a clockwise direcion - chooses firs. There are hree ypes of okens available. Suppor Tokens cos 0 each and remain in fron of he player during he game. Money paid for Suppor Tokens goes o he bank. Their purchase represens he growing srengh of he Aboliionis Cause and deermines when fuure Period Columns also become acive and heir Tokens and Aboliionis Cards become available o he players. When he players have collecively purchased all of he Suppor Tokens, hey have me one of he game s Vicory Condiions (see Game End & Winning, page 0). Conducor Tokens allow players o move slaves along pahs during he Acion Phase. They represen he effors of men and women offering refuge and guiding slaves along he Underground Railroad. The number above he cube on he oken is how many slaves can be moved, and he number above he arrow is how many spaces each of hese slaves can move. The cos in dollars o purchase a Conducor Token is lised above he oken symbol on he Token Board, inside a gold circle. Money paid for Conducor Tokens goes o he bank. The Conducor Token picured above coss in he 00- Period and allows a player o move separae slaves a single space each. Fundraising Tokens cos nohing and are one way in which players can raise money during he game. They represen he raising of funds and supplies o suppor he Aboliionis Cause. There are wo ypes of Fundraising okens. The Fundraising Tokens available during he firs wo Periods raise for each slave on a green Souhern space. The Fundraising Tokens available during he las Period raise for each slave in a blue Norhern ciy. Once all players have aken heir okens, play proceeds o he Acion Phase. When he las Suppor Token in he currenly acive Period Column is aken, he game is immediaely paused and wo changes ake effec:. The Aboliionis Card Deck in he currenly acive Period Column is removed from he game. Any of he curren Period s Aboliionis Cards already in he Aboliionis Queue remain where hey are. Any new cards will be drawn from he nex Period s Aboliionis Card Deck.. The nex Period Column is acivaed and is okens are now immediaely available o be aken by all players.. Acion Phase During he Acion Phase each player, beginning wih he curren lead player and coninuing clockwise around he board, may ake several acions. A player may ake any or all of he following Acions in any order: - Gain his Role Card s Benefi. - Use his Role Card s one ime Special Abiliy. - Play a Conducor or Fundraising Token. - Play a second Conducor or Fundraising Token. - Buy and resolve one Aboliionis Card. 9 Common Card Feaures $ The player may move a specified number of slaves a specified number of spaces. The player may purchase a single oken a full cos during he Planning Phase. Player Role Cards Each player has a role ha gives hem unique benefis in he game. Each Role Card is double sided. Players begin he game wih he Role Card face up on Side I. Preacher + during Acion Phase. - Aboliionis Card Cos during Acion Phase. A he beginning of your Acion Phase, discard an Aboliionis Card from he queue. Ignore any of he card s evens ha may be resolved by doing so. Preacher + during Acion Phase. - Aboliionis Card Cos during Acion Phase. - The player may purchase a single oken wih he shown discoun. Role Card fron - Side I Role card back - Side II The player may ake a oken a no cos. Slave cachers do no move while he player is moving slaves. Exchange he posiion of wo cards in he Aboliionis Queue. A player canno exchange a card wih an empy space. Acion: Role Card Benefis Role Benefis are lised a he op of he card above he role s image. Players receive heir benefis each round during heir Acion Phase. The one excepion is he Shepherd s - Conducor Token Cos discoun, which can be used during he Planning and Acion Phases. Acion: Role Card Special Abiliy The Special Abiliy is lised a he boom of he card below he role s image. A Special Abiliy may only be used once during he game and he phase of he game in which i may be used is indicaed. Once used, flip he Role Card over o Side II o show ha he Special Abiliy has been used. Some Role Benefis differ from Side I o Side II. + Each player receives $X from he bank. Some General Cards allow slaves o move o indicaed locaions wih no effec. This means ha his movemen does no raise money or rigger slave cachers, as normal movemen would. If an indicaed locaion is occupied by slave cachers or filled o capaciy by oher slaves, he move may no be made.

10 . Slave Marke Phase During he Slave Marke Phase, slaves are sold o he planaions in he Souh. The slaves on he boom-mos Slave Marke Card are moved o available planaion spaces. Players choose o place he slaves in any of he open spaces in one or more of he planaions. Slaves previously in he planaions can no be rearranged; only he incoming slaves may be placed freely. Once slaves have been placed hey may no be rearranged laer. If here are no open spaces in he Planaions for some or all of he incoming slaves, hey are insead placed on he Slaves Los Track on he Vicory Condiions Card. If he players have o add an addiional slave afer he las Slaves Los Space is filled, he players have los he game (see Game End & Winning, page 0). Afer he slaves on he boom Slave Marke Card have been placed, he card is removed from he game and he remaining cards slide one space down. A new Slave Marke Card is drawn and placed in he empy space and he specified number of slaves are placed on he card. The game has eigh Slave Marke Cards, one for each round in he game. The game can be won or los before round eigh, bu mus end a he end of round eigh.. Lanern Phase During he Lanern Phase he Aboliionis Card Queue is resocked for he following round. Firs, discard any card ha is in he righ mos space in he Aboliionis Queue. For or players, discard any cards in he wo righ mos spaces. A General or Reserve Card is simply discarded. An Opposiion Card will sae if i is resolved when removed and discarded. Then slide any remaining cards o he righ and draw new cards o fill in he now-empy spaces, saring wih he righmos empy space. When filling he Aboliionis Queue, only one new Opposiion Card from he deck may be added. Any Opposiion Cards already in he queue remain. If he player draws more han one new Opposiion Card hey are placed o he side. Once he queue is full, ake any Opposiion Cards se aside and shuffle hem back ino he Aboliionis Period Deck currenly being used. In he rare case here are only Opposiion Cards remaining, hey are placed in he queue. Once he Aboliionis Queue has been filled, he game s Vicory Condiions are checked. If he game is no ended, pass he Player Lanern Token clockwise o he nex player. A new round begins. Example: I is a player game, he card John Greenleaf Whiier is discarded, and he wo remaining cards are moved across o occupy he wo righ hand mos spaces of he queue. Three new cards are drawn o f ill he empy spaces from he leas expensive (righmos space) o he mos expensive (lef-mos space).

11 Game End & Winning The players win he game if hey are able o purchase all of he Suppor Tokens from all hree Periods and move he required number of slaves (as indicaed on he Vicory Condiions Card) o Canada before he end of round eigh. Wih good play and coordinaion, players may fulfill he Vicory Condiions and end he game before round eigh. The round in which he players achieve boh Vicory Condiions is he las round of he game. However, he players do no insanly win - hey sill need o finish he round wihou losing.
