2 schemes are prepared by he Lead Assessmen Wrier and considered, ogeher wih he relevan quesions, by a panel of subjec eachers. This mark scheme includes any amendmens made a he sandardisaion evens which all associaes paricipae in and is he scheme which was used by hem in his examinaion. The sandardisaion process ensures ha he mark scheme covers he sudens responses o quesions and ha every associae undersands and applies i in he same correc way. As preparaion for sandardisaion each associae analyses a number of sudens scrips. Alernaive answers no already covered by he mark scheme are discussed and legislaed for. If, afer he sandardisaion process, associaes encouner unusual answers which have no been raised hey are required o refer hese o he Lead Assessmen Wrier. I mus be sressed ha a mark scheme is a working documen, in many cases furher developed and expanded on he basis of sudens reacions o a paricular paper. Assumpions abou fuure mark schemes on he basis of one year s documen should be avoided; whils he guiding principles of assessmen remain consan, deails will change, depending on he conen of a paricular examinaion paper. The descripor for he level shows he average performance for he level. There are marks in each level. Before you apply he mark scheme o a suden s answer read hrough he answer and annoae i (as insruced) o show he qualiies ha are being looked for. You can hen apply he mark scheme. Sep Deermine a level Sar a he lowes level of he mark scheme and use i as a ladder o see wheher he answer mees he descripor for ha level. The descripor for he level indicaes he differen qualiies ha migh be seen in he suden s answer for ha level. If i mees he lowes level hen go o he nex one and decide if i mees his level, and so on, unil you have a mach beween he level descripor and he answer. Wih pracice and familiariy you will find ha for beer answers you will be able o quickly skip hrough he lower levels of he mark scheme. When assigning a level you should look a he overall qualiy of he answer and no look o pick holes in small and specific pars of he answer where he suden has no performed quie as well as he res. If he answer covers differen aspecs of differen levels of he mark scheme you should use a bes fi approach for defining he level and hen use he variabiliy of he response o help decide he mark wihin he level, ie if he response is predominanly level 3 wih a small amoun of level 4 maerial i would be placed in level 3 bu be awarded a mark near he op of he level because of he level 4 conen. Sep 2 Deermine a mark Once you have assigned a level you need o decide on he mark. The descripors on how o allocae marks can help wih his. The exemplar maerials used during sandardisaion will help. There will be an answer in he sandardising maerials which will correspond wih each level of he mark scheme. This answer will have been awarded a mark by he Lead Examiner. You can compare he suden s answer wih he example o deermine if i is he same sandard, beer or worse han he example. You can hen use his o allocae a mark for he answer based on he Lead Examiner s mark on he example. You may well need o read back hrough he answer as you apply he mark scheme o clarify poins and assure yourself ha he level and he mark are appropriae.
