2 2 Simple Ways to Spread Kindness No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted, wrote the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop. Random Acts of Kindness Week, the second full week in February, was created to encourage thoughtful gestures toward others. Here are a few ideas to spread joy: Do you enjoy writing letters? Pen thank-you notes for local police and fire departments or those serving in the military. Make cards for patients at a children s or veterans hospital as a cheerful surprise. Do you like getting compliments? Everyone does, so make a point to say something positive to people you encounter. Wish passersby a good morning or tell someone you like their outfit. Praise a server, nurse or aide for the work they do. A smile and a few kind words can brighten a person s day. Do you like connecting with younger generations? Get involved with a day care, school or youth organization and read to the youngsters, share stories about your life or teach them a game or skill. Do animals hold a special place in your heart? Buy or make treats for a friend or family member s pet, or collect and donate food, blankets and toys to an animal shelter. Peg Darnell So, if your New Year s resolution is to take better care of yourself, then here is the perfect opportunity. Peg will be here on the 8th at 2:00 in the dining room to do Chair Yoga. Peg has worked with the Silver Sneakers seniors. Cooking With Class We will be having cooking class on Tuesday, February 21st at 2:00. We will be making Mexican rice that day. After that you will be bringing your recipes to me and we ll get the ingredients and make it together. Maybe start a new trend, taking turns cooking that favorite dish. -Sherri- Sweet Thinking Craving a sweet treat this Valentine s Day? Feel free to indulge in a little dark chocolate. With even more antioxidant properties than some fruits and vegetables, plus special compounds that can help lower LDL cholesterol, dark chocolate is one way to make your heart happy this holiday. For chocolate lovers, the dark stuff is a smart choice every time studies show it may also improve blood flow to the brain and boost cognitive function. Be sure to look for chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa content for the most nutritional benefits.

3 3 What s New in the View Love never goes out of style and neither does Valentine s Day! Our community will be celebrating in a big way. Residents will be given the opportunity to kick up their heels at our Roses and Red Carpet Dance on the 14th. The music will play, photos will be taken, and appetizers will be served. It will be glorious! Residents are encouraged to dress in their best duds and come planning to cut a rug! Prior to the dance itself, interested residents will be crafting centerpieces and corsages. Please check the calendar for dates and times. While it is true that February is here in all of its cold and chilly glory, inside American House Riverview it is cozy and inviting. Nothing is better on a cold day than soup. On Souper bowl Saturday residents will be treated to a souper good time with soup and bread tasting. On Super Bowl Sunday refreshments will be served as a pregame warm up. Wit & Wisdom Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze. Elinor Glyn In a great romance, each person basically plays a part that the other really likes. Elizabeth Ashley Counting Birds for a Cause Every February, nature lovers across the globe have the chance to help out scientists by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Created in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, the project collects real-time data on wild bird species over four days. You don t have to be a bird-watching expert to take part in fact, Audubon scientists recommend the project as a fun and worthwhile way to introduce yourself or someone else to birding. After creating a free account at GBBC.BirdCount.org, simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count and submit the results. Experts suggest familiarizing yourself with the key bird identification categories size and shape, color pattern, behavior, and habitat and consulting a field guide specific to birds in your region. In addition to tallying species, the bird count also helps researchers study climate change, avian diseases and other factors that can affect bird populations and migration patterns. In the past, more than 160,000 people from over 130 countries have participated and identified nearly 5,700 kinds of birds. This year s Great Backyard Bird Count takes place Feb The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place every February Tradition wears a snowy beard; romance is always young. John Greenleaf Whittier The word romance, according to the dictionary, means excitement, adventure and something extremely real. Romance should last a lifetime. Billy Graham To me, romance and suspense go hand in hand. What s more suspenseful than wondering how two wonderful people can manage to get together in spite of the world going crazy around them? Maggie Shayne

5 6 Talk About It Acting the Part Whether you have experience with acting or prefer to watch others perform, take the stage with friends and family and reflect on these questions. Who are your favorite actors and actresses? Why do you admire their work? What movies, TV shows or stage productions have they appeared in? Do you prefer watching actors perform comedy, drama or both? Do you think a serious role or comedic role would be harder to play, and why? Have you ever acted, perhaps in a school play, community theater or even on TV or in a movie? If so, discuss the experience. If you have never acted, do you wish you would have tried it? Do you know anyone who worked or currently works as a professional actor? 6 7 Time to Lose That Extra Weight From the Holidays By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Happy New Year! Many people are not successful at weight loss because they forget to have fun. One way to lose weight and have fun is through doing an activity you enjoy. Below is a list of activities and calories that can be burned by completing them. Dancing: 300 calories per hour Golf: 246 calories per hour Playing piano: 176 calories per hour Walking: 246 calories per hour Aerobics: 422 calories per hour Cooking: 176 calories per hour In order to lose one pound per week, a person needs to burn an extra 500 calories per day. Once you have lost the unwanted pounds, here are some interesting facts regarding individuals who have lost 30 or more pounds and kept the weight off. They all ate a nutritious breakfast daily. They weighed themselves at least two times weekly. They watched less than 10 hours of TV weekly. They all exercised one hour daily. Many different exercise programs are available at all American House locations. Come join in the fun! Happy New Year! Dennis in theater room watching football. Hank playing corn hole. Roy at entertainment. Remember Me? Pioneering entertainer Eubie Blake was a ragtime pianist and composer whose career spanned more than eight decades. Like his music, he was an American original. He was born James Hubert Blake in Baltimore on Feb. 7, Blake began playing organ at age 6. By age 16, he was performing ragtime at clubs. In 1915, he teamed up with singer Noble Sissle, and they went on the vaudeville circuit as the Dixie Duo. The two co-wrote the landmark musical Shuffle Along, which opened in It was the first Broadway show to be created and performed by African-Americans. Blake composed more than 3,000 songs, including I m Just Wild About Harry and the timeless hit he is best known for, Memories of You.
