5 6 Welcome! Welc me New Residents Dorothy S. Sally C. Eric L. Shelia A. Robert B. Colleen B. We re thrilled you ve decided to make our community home!! As soon as you ve settled in, we d like to invite you to join some of our fun and exciting activities! A Guide to Gouache Painting If you dabble in watercolors or acrylic paints, you can enjoy the best of both worlds with gouache painting. Pronounced gwash, this type of paint dates back to the Middle Ages and was first used to create illuminated manuscripts. Later, it became a popular medium for commercial artists and illustrators. Used much like watercolor paints, gouache is sometimes given the simplified description opaque watercolors. Unlike watercolors, however, gouache has a heavier texture and bolder colors, since it is less transparent. The paint also allows the artist to create more detailed works. Gouache dries much more quickly than watercolors, acrylics and oil paints, but it also can be rewetted, both on the palette and painting surface, to be reworked even years after the paint was first applied. This versatility makes the medium a popular choice for novice artists. For best results, water is added to concentrated gouache paint to achieve a creamy consistency, then brushed on the paper, canvas or illustration board in layers, allowing each layer to dry between applications. A finished gouache painting has a matte finish unless a varnish or other sealer is applied. Gouache paint is also known as opaque watercolors Hot Cocoa & Cookies Join us on January 10th at 2:00 pm in the dining room. Ice Cream Social! 6 7 Time to Lose That Extra Weight From the Holidays By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Happy New Year! Many people are not successful at weight loss because they forget to have fun. One way to lose weight and have fun is through doing an activity you enjoy. Below is a list of activities and calories that can be burned by completing them. Dancing: 300 calories per hour Golf: 246 calories per hour Playing piano: 176 calories per hour Walking: 246 calories per hour Aerobics: 422 calories per hour Cooking: 176 calories per hour In order to lose one pound per week, a person needs to burn an extra 500 calories per day. Once you have lost the unwanted pounds, here are some interesting facts regarding individuals who have lost 30 or more pounds and kept the weight off. They all ate a nutritious breakfast daily. They weighed themselves at least two times weekly. They watched less than 10 hours of TV weekly. They all exercised one hour daily. Many different exercise programs are available at all American House locations. Come join in the fun! Happy New Year! Cue the Cauliflower While cauliflower may be lacking in color, the super food more than makes up for it with health benefits and versatility. Cauliflower is a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, which includes broccoli, cabbage and kale. But unlike those green crops, cauliflower s heavy leaves cover its head (called a curd) as it grows, blocking out sunlight and preventing the production of chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color. Without the sun s rays, the head stays white. Cultivated in Asia and the Mediterranean more than 2,000 years ago, cauliflower was first grown in North America in the late 1600s. Cauliflower is low-calorie and packed with fiber, folate, vitamins C and K and other antioxidants. These nutrients have been shown to boost brain and heart health and help fight disease. Its florets, stems and leaves can be eaten raw or cooked in any number of ways. Because of its compatible color and texture, cauliflower is sometimes used as a low-calorie substitute in potato and rice dishes and even pizza crust. California is the top U.S. producer of cauliflower. You Should Know! EXERCISE!!! Exercise class is held Monday-Friday at 10:00 am and on Saturdays at 10:30 am. All exercise classes are held in the Lobby. Resident Party BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION! Please join us on January 31st at 2:00 pm, in the dining room, as we celebrate our residents who celebrated a birthday this month! Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of: Myra Eaton Kathleen Sweeney We were honored to have your loved one call our community home. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers!
