3 Welcome Welcome to the third Kendal Wool Gathering. When we started this event in 2013 we had no idea where it was going to take us. Well, thanks to our sponsors, partners and participants, this looks like being our biggest, and hopefully our best, Gathering yet. Our sponsors are our hosts K Village, Westmorland Agricultural Society, Kendal Town Council and CNJ Media. Without them, this celebration of Kendal s wool heritage couldn t happen. I am delighted that most of our previous stallholders have returned, and this year we have many new participants, making 39 in all. There are so many, we have had to spread the market hall over two of the largest units here at K Village. In addition we have several partners whose activities make this a comprehensive and varied tribute to the trade on which Kendal s wealth was built. In the second market hall, Kendal Quaker Tapestry have organised a road-show demonstration of how they create the panels of that unique attraction. The Lancs and Lakes Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers will be demonstrating their skills over the two days in the mall, as well as having a stall in the market hall. Outside in the marquee, Westmorland Agricultural Society has supplied livestock and farmers to tell their story of life on the farm and how they raise the animals that provides fleeces to make wool. 3 The Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry has joined forces with the Wordsworth Trust to provide a pop-up exhibition of life on the fells, telling the story through the photographs of Joseph Hardman and poetry. Poetry workshops are being run by award-winning poet Kim Moore, using the Hardman photographs as inspiration. Later today (Saturday) there will be an open-mic session upstairs in the Kendal Heritage Centre, where the result of their labours will be heard. Our friends Creation Station occupy a unit to provide children s activities based on wool. And also in the mall, Kendal Arts Community is revealing its latest exhibition, appropriately themed The Gathering. Blue Badge Guide David White is also on hand to lead two walks around the sites of significant wool heritage in Kendal, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. They each end at Kendal Town Hall, where former Mayor Tom Clare will show some of the council s wool memorabilia, including Jill Harrison s wool picture of the recreation of the famous Joseph Hardman photograph Kendal Rush Hour, which he purchased for the Town Council. Also away from K Village, our friends at The Factory, in Aynam Road, are opening their doors to the public, with ARTSPACE26a holding a special exhibition 50 Ways to See a Sheep and more, charity Space2Create and The Weavers studios showing their skills. Other artists, including Paul Girling (chair-maker), Danny Clahane (sculptor), Rebecca Callis (ceramics) and Jo Vincent (glass) will be open for some of the day. I hope you agree this varied and vibrant mix of activities will make Kendal Wool Gathering 2015 a weekend to remember. Final thanks go to Chris Hogg, Kendal s Mayor, and a huge supporter of the arts and culture in his many public roles. He has kindly found time and space in his busy diary to officially open Kendal Wool Gathering, Mike Glover, Chairman, Kendal Wool Gathering (a not-for-profit voluntary organisation)
