1 Welcome! This picture guide will help you find your way around the museum. There are useful tips for activities you can do, a little bit of information on different models or objects you will see in the galleries. There is also information on the facilities available including: seating areas and toilets. December 15, 2017 University of Reading 2017 merl.reading.ac.uk

2 This is The Museum of English Rural Life There is a small car park in the grounds of the museum staff at reception will provide you with a parking permit 2

3 This is the courtyard and the main entrance to the museum There is a push button at the entrance for wheelchair access 3

4 This is the reception where you will be greeted by a friendly member of staff 4

5 As you enter, the shop will be on your right 5

6 The staircase on your left will take you to the Nook or you can use the lift 6

7 In the Nook you can sit on our comfy sofa or view the latest community exhibition 7

8 The room next door also has comfy seating to relax in 8

9 or take a seat at the cheese table for a view of the courtyard and take a drink from the water cooler 9

10 Turn left through this exit for the toilets 10

11 Toilets are through here 11

12 Back at reception you will find more of the shop and Welcome Space 12

13 The door on the right will take you to The Learning Studio 13

14 In here you can do a brass rubbing and see our sensory cow! 14

15 This is the Welcome Space 15

16 This is the cafe with a view of our large garden 16

17 This is the cafe with a view of our large garden. You can have a drink or a snack. 17

18 In the garden there is lots of space to walk around and play in. 18

19 We also have chickens and a Shepherd s Hut: you can sit in here and read a book or relax. 19

20 This is the entrance to the galleries 20

21 Shaping the Landscape Gallery: This gallery is quite dark and small with a bright animation projected on the wall 21

22 A Year on the Farm Gallery 22

23 You will see some mannequins in this gallery. There will also be a model of a slaughtered animal 23

24 You will find a sheep with a knitted coat that you can touch! You can also play games on the interactive screens or play with the jigsaw puzzles 24

25 Town and Country Gallery: At the entrance you will see a wicker model of a horse and further down the gallery there is a large steam engine! 25

26 You can try on a hat and see how you look in the mirror or listen to stories on the interactive touch screen 26

27 At the end of this gallery you will see a glass panel displaying a large print of a map (through the glass panel you will be able to see the Collecting England gallery) 27

28 Making Rural England Gallery: This gallery will include some hunting objects 28

29 Collecting England Gallery: In here you can listen to the radio with audio clips from the soap opera, The Archers 29

30 To your right you will see a staircase to the upper floor 30

31 The upper floor is called the mezzanine: It is very long and narrow and with the gridded path you can see the floor below 31

32 If you turn right at the top of the staircase you will see lots of objects behind cases and lots of ploughs! 32

33 If you turn left at the top of the staircase you can view the galleries below on either side 33

34 Keep walking in this direction and you will find the Ladybird Gallery which overlooks the gallery below 34

35 You can use this door in the Welcome Space with a staircase also leading to the upper floor 35

36 or you can take the lift at the end of the Forces for Change Gallery 36

37 Walk back down the stairs and turn right to visit the Forces for Change Gallery 37

38 In this gallery you can choose a film to watch and sit on the bench 38

39 Our Country Lives Gallery: This gallery has dimmed lighting 39

40 In the centre is a bright, large interactive table where you can play games and there is a wicker model of King Alfred 40

41 Around the corner is the Wagon Walk: This is very long and narrow and you might hear other people walking across the mezzanine above you 41

42 You can watch a film about how wagons are made in this gallery 42

43 The end of the Wagon Walk will lead you back to the shop and Welcome Space 43
