E&OE Creative Hobbies 2 Creative Education All important life skills can be learned through crafting: How to read, how to write and maths. The minute you make an activity fun for a child the learning part is easy. Developing a young mind is one of the most important, and difficult, jobs a parent has. We often forget the power of crafts when it comes to teaching little ones. As crafters, we have the power to open their minds and show them the value of crafts from a young age. For example, if you wanted to teach a child how to write, use finger paint and allow them to write numbers and letters in the paint. Write their names in large block letters on different pieces of scrapbook paper and have them cut it out. Take the learning outside and have them draw in the sand with a stick, or play a round of good old hop scotch. In each block draw a number or letter of the alphabet, and have them say it out loud as they jump on the blocks. Have them build something with Legos, then take it apart and have them sort the Legos by colour, then shape, and then count them. Let them make up their own story, write it down for them, and have them draw their own pictures. Bring the fun back into learning, and never, ever, pack away the craft materials.
