1 President s Message Upcoming Guild Events Special Interest Groups Contact Information Submitted by Members Birthdays In This Issue General Meeting Minutes Board Members Upcoming Workshops Member Profile Support Your Local Businesses Two items were left at the September guild meeting: a thermos top/coffee mug and photo album of sheep with Alma College on the front of it. Kathy Grace will bring the items to the October meeting, or if the items are needed sooner contact Kathy at (360) ). Photos throughout the newsletter are from the September meeting special interest group information tables. President s Message I want to thank all the special interest groups for bringing in their samples and talking to the guild about what their special interest group does. It was informative to the new and old members alike. When I walked around it looked like the sign-up sheets for joining those groups were full of names ready to start a new year of learning. So thank you everyone who made the guild program work! September is the start of our guild s new year; it also brings the autumn equinox. Autumn equinox falls on September 22, 1:01pm in Prescott AZ, which officially marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Equinox comes from the Latin language and means equal night. For two days and two nights we will have equal daylight to night darkness, then they start to split apart. This means for our area we will start to have shorter days and cooler nights. This means that we have to work harder or work into the night to finish all of our wanted projects. For me this is great because my studio is much cooler; therefore, I spend more time in my studio weaving! Life is great during the fall for me! In closing, the best way to not feel hopeless or worrisome is to get up and make some sort of fiber-related item. Don t wait for someone to hand you that pattern because the best cure for weariness is the challenge of the creation of fiber art. If you go out and make something from fiber you will fill the world with hope and you will fill yourself with satisfaction. He or she who always creates fiber always benefits more than him or her who sits stationary and waits for others to create for them. Continue to create no matter how small or large then share your creation with others! Flyers have been printed and are available for passing out: thank you Yvonne Johnson. Sign-up sheets are available for different volunteer positions. We will be delighted to have any and all assistance, even if you don't sell. If you wish to help us out and are unable to make it to a meeting to sign up please give Sara a call. The plan is to fill the large venue with little shop-like display groupings to include wearables, kitchen items, baskets, interior decorations, gifts, fiber items-hand dyed and handspun. Once again we are happy to be sharing the back of the room with the Prescott Area Wood Turners. Remember the guild will only be taking 10% commission from your sales. Show take-in is Wednesday November 8 from 1-4 p.m. at Yvonne Johnson s home: 7231 E. Conestoga Way, Prescott Valley (928) and Thursday November 9 from 1-4 p.m. at Barb Kiger s home: 121 N. Rocky Dells Drive (928) If these dates or times don t work for you, please contact either Yvonne or Barb to make alternate arrangements. After the show, you must pick up your items at the end of the day or arrange for a friend to do so. We are in desperate need of raffle basket items. Remember, this is how we pay for the room rental. All items welcome as long as they meet the criteria for the sale itself. Please be sure to include your name and contact information along with fiber content of your items. Contact Nancy Wilson at or (spinllama@msn.com) if you have any questions. If you are unable to bring items to the October meeting, please contact me to make alternate arrangements to get your items to me. Thanks for your contributions! Wondering what to donate? How about books or fiber-related tools, hats, scarves, fingerless gloves, mittens, hand towels, placemats, napkins, table runners, hand-dyed yarn, baby items, Christmas themed items, guy stuff, or items with bling! Please give Sara a call for questions or concerns. My number is P a g e

If you have questions, please contact Nancy Wilson at spinllama@msn.com or Submitted by Nancy Wilson Submitted by Members When you go on a trip, do you go out of your way to check out a fiber shop? Or maybe you don t even go out of your way; the trip is all about the fiber! Well, your fellow fiber enthusiasts would love to learn about those places. If you can t travel there in person, then travel vicariously! Write up a short something about your trip and I ll include it in the newsletter. And remember that photos are great too! Last I checked, a picture was worth 1,000 words. Perhaps you actually got to visit a shop we all have read about; take a picture of you in front of the store and tell us about what you purchased or drooled over. To kick things off, I will be visiting Door County, Wisconsin and the Chicago area next week. Stops are going to include the Sievers School of Fiber Arts in Wisconsin and other local fiber producers. There is a shop whose owners raise Bactrian camels and have yarn made with their camel and alpaca fiber. I have two skeins my sister got me this year, so I m hoping we get to make a quick stop this trip. I ll also be stopping at a local yarn store in my hometown of LaGrange and perhaps getting a chance to swing my Esther s Place in Big Rock. Should be a fun trip! It s also pumpkin festival and the leaves should be lovely. Member Profile Verla Davis What forms of fiber art do you do? Crochet, embroidery (crewel, counted cross stitch, needlepoint), sewing, knitting, macramé, tatting, quilting, bobbin lace, weaving, dyeing, felting, and very little spinning. How did you get interested in fiber arts? My great grandma and grandma started me when I would visit during the summers when I was just 5 years old. In a perfect world, what would a day of fiber art look like? Well, the day would be about a month long with NO interruptions so I could get something done. Describe a recent project that you completed. Several knitting projects including a lovely blue alpaca cardi. 5 P a g e

6 If you were to add one more type of fiber art to your repertoire, what would it be? Oh has a new one been invented or discovered? What do you like best about the Mountain Spinners & Weavers Guild? The community, so I know that I m not the only one crazy about this stuff! Please share a tip with the members. WARP! WARP! WARP!
