Background There is an increasing interest in doing Quantity take-off and costing from BIM using the buildingsmart standards. buildingsmart International are in the process of developing new methods to be more responsive to specific end-user needs. Statsbygg and others has approached buildingsmart International and specifically stated that they want to focus at quantity take-off, costing etc. from BIM models using open standards. They are also interested in identifying the software applications/vendors that can/will be able to provide solutions that will work in a day-to-day situation. There has already been done some good work within the same area through buildingsmart DACH (German speaking) and also NELFO/AHUS has recently done some proof of concept for electro. Previously also the Norwegian products Focus Anbud, Calcus and DDS- CAD MEP has done an implementation that uses IFC to communicate Norwegian NS3420 codes between the applications for tendering (Norwegian: "beskrivelse") As a response to the end-users request, buildingsmart International invited interested technology and software providers to a working session hosted by Norsk Teknologi (NELFO) in Oslo. This meeting took place 4th March at the address: Fridtjof Nansens vei 17, 0369 Oslo form 09:00 to 14:00. 2

Background The goal is to develop Exchange Requirements that define how and where quantity information should be in IFC models. The approach will be to first clearly define the actual relevant processes in the industry and then identify the need for information exchange between those processes. (Typically NS 3420 and other relevant standards will be a part of this for Norwegian users needs) Existing capabilities in both sending and receiving applications and current support from the buildingsmart standards will also be used to scope the work if necessary. The approach to the workshop will be very similar to the typical "point-to-point" (application to application) that software vendors are used to, with the main difference that IFC will be used as the transporting vehicle for the information. 3

Background The main focus for this session will be the building services (electro, ventilation, heating, plumbing etc.) However to make sure this is defined in an interdisciplinary consistent way (building, electro, ventilation, plumbing, structural etc.) also work done for other disciplines will be looked into. To achieve a good and consistent result and get the best possible guidance, we've invited some of the top model experts within the buildingsmart community. In addition to the Exchange Requirements, the idea is also that interested vendors will use this opportunity to provide the market with working implementations. The meeting is open to all buildingsmart/iai members. (The meeting will be in the form of a work-session, that will require basic knowledge about building SMART and IFC)GOAL 4

Goals Goal of Aquarium: See commitment from quantity-take-off and costing tool suppliers to participate in Aquarium See clear end-user involvement and participation in defining user needs Keep Aquarium focused on practical solutions Goal of 1.st workshop: Agree on a common vocabulary Make a status of state-of-the-art of quantity-take-off and costing tools (building services focus) Clarify and describe scope of work in this Aquarium Make a preliminary schedule of work 5

The Aquarium Development model - background International buildingsmart Alliance. Bjørn K Stangeland and Larc C Christensen. In order for buildingsmart to prosper, customers/stakeholders need to see obvious benefits from contributing to and participating in buildingsmart work and processes Three ingredients need to be present to make a good SOLUTION; a user defined problem of high value, buildingsmart standards and sw development capability The Aquarium model focus on bringing these three ingredients together in a transparent and collaborative setting where other users and software developers may join the key user and key sw developers in developing a working solution In the Aquarium the key participants are driving the process, and others can join in to observe or participate in the process The Aquarium model uses well know software development methods for specifying and creating point-to-point solutions PROBLEM FUNDING - SOLUTION 16
