Developed a Comprehensive Set of IFC Data Model Concepts for Precast Use Goal: define the Concepts needed to cover the domain of precast concrete design, engineering, fabrication, erection as defined by technical committee Include reference design information: For project and site, loads and performance requirements, for other system objects that precast interacts with (connects, pass-throughs, embeds, clashes with, etc) Extended IFC schema to support precast Model View Definitions Posted on IFC Solutions Factory

IFC Concept Specification IDDS Workshop, April 2012 To facilitate and support implementation, IT Advisors provide test models for each MVD Concept. These are both specifications for a model to test export and Part-21 files to test import. Recent development of a test site, supporting automated testing, requires definition of the testing rules needed to certify an MVD. Business rules defined the allowed value of each field in the Concept

Identify IFC equivalent of requirements IDM Requirements 1 2 IFC information model Native information model Model View Definition (MVD) 1. Identify the IFC entities that represent the IDM requirements 2. For each application, find the native data entities that correspond to the IDM requirements and IFC entities 3. Implement mappings in one or both directions
Verifiable Implementation Provide implementation level test cases Example pieces and definition requirements, to test if exported correctly Example IFC part models that can be imported into a BIM tool for a target use
Verifiable Implementation Example pieces and definition requirements, to test if exported correctly Sandwich panel wall with cross-ties Hollowcore slab with topping

Precast Concrete BIM Standard Progress Report Status Summary 1, PCI Exchange Standards are complete (almost) 2. Currently working with software companies on their implementation of translators 3. Developing increasingly more complex test cases 4. Had simple 3 hour demo at PCI Convention Salt lake City (October, 2011) 5. Had complex 4 hour demo at PCI Convention Nashville (September, 2012) 6. Now focusing on the tests used for certification of software 7. Expect to be done in May timeframe, 2013 September 28, 2012
MVD Binding Documents: Assessment IDDS Workshop, April 2012 Status of Model View BIM Standards: Concepts defined in Ad Hoc manner - too low level; many can be combined for testing without eliminating flexibility MVD too time consuming to develop mos. Multiple man years Very rigid: satisfactory for contractual pass-offs, poor for collaboration Very much a black-box, not easily understood by casual users What is the next step in Model Exchange? Testing is onerous; SW companies will be reluctant to support many MVDs
New form of Concept: Semantic Exchange Module (SEM) SEM is Concept extended to include both IFC and native bindings; a logical structure above IFC that eliminates plumbing connection details ; can be implemented to support dynamic composition by users, to define new MVDs for collaborative needs. IDDS Workshop, April 2012 IDM Requirements Native Model Binding Semantic Exchange Module IFC Binding IFC information model Native information model Export & import mappings If SEMS can be combined and automatically compiled, then the mapping from IDM to MVD can be done interactively, in afternoon. If SEMS can be tested and certified, then the total effort by SW companies is greatly reduced, because a SEM module need only be implemented & tested once
Semantic Exchange Module (SEM) IDDS Workshop, April 2012 Translator implementation as the construction of a set of information modules single definition, single testing, repeated use of translation modules Implementation modules that can be composed into varied model view translators MVD MVD Need rigorous specification standard of Concept; Implemented Semantic Phrase Book of Packaged Implementations 800+ IFC entities, plus appx. 800 properties, relations SEMs apply to IFC native bindings and are implemented once Variable number of SEMs implemented and tested by each SW company SEMS can be composed into MVDs by knowledgeable users Concepts are tested once and validated, not requiring internal testing again
