The software provides shipbuilders with better decisio support capabilities to facilitate global desig, productio ad life cycle optimizatio. I 2006, Keppel Offshore & Marie (Keppel O&M) adopted this ext geeratio software as a data-cetric solutio to streamlie its ew-build desig processes. We started talkig to Itergraph i late 2003 about usig PDS to deliver the P-51, P-52 ad P-56 projects, said Aziz Merchat, geeral maager for egieerig at Keppel O&M. At that time, the SmartMarie 3D software was ew to us. Itergraph provided us with traiig which helped our team uderstad the tools ad their usage. Keppel O&M completed its trial of SmartMarie 3D i Its Mumbai egieerig office subsequetly became the first to use Smart- Marie 3D as its modelig tool for a ewbuild semisubmersible drillig teder for its customer Seadrill. This drillig teder is built to Keppel s SSDTTM proprietary desig which caters to operatios i the deepwater regios i the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa ad Southeast Asia. SmartMarie 3D improved our productivity by reducig the ma-hours required to desig projects. Its user-friedly iterface ad excellet graphics are a added advatage for us, said Merchat. Itergraph has partered with Keppel O&M extesively o this project ad has provided site support ad cosultatio to optimize the usage of SmartMarie 3D. The SSDT project for Seadrill is ow close to completio. From the time we first used PDS, the techical support we have received from Itergraph has bee very good. 5 CASE STUDY: GRENLAND GROUP Grelad Group Chooses SmartPlat Eterprise to Maximize Offshore Productio Itegratig huge amout of data i tight timeframe By Terje Tviereim Grelad Group eeded to be able to deliver all egieerig ad maufacturig iformatio for the Low Pressure Modificatio Project at the Oseberg field i the Norwegia part of the North Sea. The project ivolved two offshore platforms coected by a bridge. Owed ad operated by StatoilHydro, the Norwegia oil ad gas compay, the eormous ad complex Oseberg field modificatio effort required 170,000 egieerig labor hours. The project deadlie was also extremely tight. Meetig the challege At Oseberg, the project goal is to be able to produce more oil from the wells as the field eters the fial portio of its life cycle. Low pressure modificatio meas that, with a lower pressure productio method, StatoilHydro will maximize the amout of oil it ca extract durig the ed-of-life of these wells. The project is a huge challege with great potetial gai. To succeed will require a moumetal effort i itegratig disparate data, icludig maual drawig iformatio, existig 3D models coverted from PDMS, use of ew 3D laser scaig techology ad ew modelig data. The modificatio project also demads ew process iformatio ad istrumetatio tasks to be geerated, i additio to the update of existig P&IDs ad istrumetatio. As the compay ad its busiess grew, desig egieerig system activities became icreasigly harder to support ad more expesive to maage. To support multidisciplie projects i the oshore, offshore ad marie markets costefficietly ad o time, Grelad eeded a itegrated desig system that used traditioal 3D models ad 2D CAD drawigs as a desig basis. The desired system would act as a sigle platform for all egieerig iformatio, especially i large-scale projects. Puttig it all together The timeframe for StatoilHydro s project completio is very critical. This puts a heavy burde o Grelad to be able to automate the iformatio flow to avoid delays. The project s fiacial success, both for cliet ad ower operator, depeds o this. SmartPlat Eterprise is essetial to achievig our goal, said Terje Ørbeck, CAD maager ad 3D coordiator at Grelad Group. Settig the stadard To put it mildly, Ørbeck admits, there was a lot of very differet egieerig software i use at Grelad. Iformatio had to be itegrated from geeral draftig systems, like AutoCAD ad MicroStatio 2D drawigs, ad from 3D modelig, such as from PDS, PlatSpace ad PDMS. There was a eed for stadardizatio i order to miimize costs ad maximize resources. Grelad chose the SmartPlat Eterprise suite, icludig SmartPlat 3D, SmartPlat Foudatio, SmartPlat P&ID ad SmartPlat Istrumetatio. SmartPlat Eterprise met ad eve exceeded our expectatios, says Ørbeck. Approximately 20 desigers i the Oseberg project use the system for 3D modelig, structural desig, pipig ad equipmet desig ad raceway desig. Layout ad structural fabricatio drawigs, pipig isometrics ad spools are all extracted from the system. SmartPlat Foudatio is used as the iformatio source for a wide rage of people who eed access to project data. 7 Case Study: Samsug Heavy Idustries Smooth Sailig for Samsug Heavy Idustries SmartMarie 3D cuts desig errors ad boosts productivity By Jaa Miller The secod largest shipbuilder i the world, Samsug Heavy Idustries Co. Ltd. (SHI) is strogly focused o the shipbuildig ad offshore markets. The South Korea compay has almost 11,000 employees ad sales totaled US$8.5 billio i SHI desigs ad costructs high value-added vessels such as LNG carriers ad large passeger ships, as well as drill ships ad shuttle takers, for which it is globally raked No. 1. The compay operates eight overseas facilities, icludig a ship block factory i Chia. SHI holds three iteratioal quality stadards ISO 9001, ISO ad OHSAS ad is iteratioally recogized for its quality, safety ad evirometal awareess. Seeig results SHI s Geoje Shipyard bega usig Itergraph SmartMarie 3D i productio i 2004 ad it has already yielded measurable results that have impacted SHI s bottom lie. Sice choosig SmartMarie 3D, we ve made a remarkable reductio i the amout of desig errors ad material costs. We ve also improved costructio productivity, said Yeog Soo Bae, executive vice presidet of Shipbuildig Desig at SHI. With SmartMarie 3D, we have reduced desig errors i half. We have also improved productivity by about 10 percet. SmartMarie 3D SHI uses SmartMarie 3D for desigig ad buildig the structure ad outfittig of ships (see table). The solutio helps SHI maage a Microsoft SQL Server database with 1.1 terabytes of active data. SmartMarie 3D supports cocurret egieerig ad a frot-loadig workflow. The solutio provides a large amout of productio iformatio to easily iterface with ERP systems, ad SHI is workig to take advatage of this by developig a iterface. Itegratios with third party solutio Eest, a structure estig program, alog with several i-house solutios, have proved very beeficial. These itegratios traslate ito a large reductio i desig labor hours at SHI, said Bae. Across the eterprise SHI recetly chose SmartPlat Foudatio, Itergraph s iformatio maagemet solutio, to improve its productivity. This marks the first implemetatio of SmartPlat Foudatio i the shipbuildig idustry. SmartPlat Foudatio forms a cetral data warehouse ad egieerig ad maufacturig data chage chael for large ad complicated ship desig. As shipbuildig projects grow larger while project schedules become shorter, a itegrated product ad egieerig iformatio maagemet system represets a key success factor. This SmartSketch stadardizatio will exted to SHI s offshore plat divisio ad its subsidiary shipyard i Chia. I-depth services SHI s experiece has show that SmartMarie solutios require far less traiig tha previously used software solutios ad its employees ca be fully productive i far less time i a matter of moths istead of a year or more. Traiig icludes basic courses such as a seve-week course for structural users, ad a three-week course for outfittig users. Itergraph supports our maagemet team with valuable services, said Bae. The Itergraph staff has also helped us with a umber of customizatio efforts, icludig catalogs, rules, specificatios, drawig labels, plus stadards data migratio. Martec Speeds Structural Aalysis by Itegratig FE Tools with Global 3D Modelig New FE methodology could reduce dowtime for ships By Kevi Corbley Research idicates that i-service maiteace issues o large marie vessels ca be assessed more quickly with detailed fiite elemet (FE) aalysis whe structural geometry ad coectivity data are extracted from global 3D models of the ships. This approach is far more costeffective tha geeratig localized FE models from scratch. The research was coducted o behalf of the Caadia Navy by Martec Ltd., Halifax, N.S., Caada, a specialist i performig advaced egieerig simulatios for the aalysis of complex structures. Accordig to David Brea, Martec maager of aval platforms, the ew FE methodology makes sese from a practical perspective because global digital 3D models are icreasigly beig created durig the desig ad costructio of ew ships. As a result, they are more readily available for use oce the ship becomes operatioal, extedig the usefuless of the models through the ship s life cycle. I the future, a 3D model will be oe of the deliverables to the Caadia Navy [whe a ew ship is built,] said Brea. This model will start i the prelimiary desig or cocept phase, ad the data will cotiue to evolve through the costructio ito the i-service support ad the ito decommissioig. Bridgig the sigificat gap betwee FE ad global 3D modelig to make life cycle models a reality ultimately became the objective of the research. To accomplish this, Martec teamed with Itergraph Corp., Hutsville, Ala., a developer of eterprise, aval ad commercial ship desig solutios. Assessig the tools The research cotract with Defece Research ad Developmet Caada i Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, called for the firm to assess the curret status of available software tools that could be used to aalyze how structural damage to a ship might impact its operatioal capabilities. The egieerig firm already had several FE aalysis tools uder developmet. The damage i questio could be the result of corrosio, collisio, groudig, weapos blast or ormal wear ad tear. Although such damage may be foud durig a routie refit, the Caadia Navy was more cocered with icidets that happe at sea. I these cases, time is of the essece. The objective of the project was to develop methods to quickly determie whether the ship could cotiue o its missio or eeded to retur to port for immediate repairs. Martec focused o simulatig how localized damage affected the overall stregth of a ship. For the research, Martec modified its ow suite of FE modelig tools for marie aalysis. But first the firm had to create a digital 3D model of a Caadia aval vessel. Techicias simulated various types of vessel damage i a computerized eviromet ad the applied structural stregth, hydrodyamic ad other aalysis algorithms. I a The Marie Idustry Isight 7

10 SECTION TITLE GOES HERE operatioal mode, the goal would be to provide the ship s captai with a detailed assessmet of the situatio withi a matter of hours. The five-year research project yielded both good ad bad ews, accordig to Michael Lichodzijewski, Martec seior software egieer. The results Martec selected the SmartMarie Eterprise solutio from Itergraph s Process, Power & Marie divisio to iterface with its FE aalysis suite. Previously kow as ItelliShip, this software solutio was developed by Itergraph for use i the coceptual desig, egieerig, materials procuremet, parts maufacturig ad costructio of a vessel or offshore structure. This package had bee created with life cycle optimizatio i mid. I additio to the fact that the Itergraph solutio is deployed commercially at shipyards aroud the world, the package appealed to Martec ad suited the compay s eeds i several ways. Most importat was the architecture of the 3D modelig software, which provided a ope programmer iterface where simple scripts could be writte to plug i the FE aalysis tools. This allows the Martec software to select ad export large amouts of data directly from the global model. O top of that, the ease of use allowed faster creatio of the required 3D models. Our tools extract structural geometry ad related iformatio from the global model i a itelliget fashio ad maipulate the data to geerate a more ratioal fiite elemet model, said Lichodzijewski. This is a critical advatage for FE modelig because the global 3D model cotais ot oly the geometry of the ship s structural elemets, but the database icludes a wealth of iformatio relatig to the idividual pieces. For example, the 3D model reveals that a specific plate is coected to a stiffeer, ad the accompayig database describes the materials of each part alog with rules dictatig how they are correctly coected to oe aother ad to surroudig elemets. This database iformatio, sometimes referred to as sematics, describes the attributes ad relatioship of every structural elemet i the ship. The value of such exhaustive iformatio, accordig to Dr. Mark Riley of Defece Research ad Developmet Caada, is the geometric model ca be used for seve or eight differet types of aalysis. Just as importatly, the richess of coectivity detail i the SmartMarie database eables FE aalysis to be performed at both the macro ad micro level. Specifically, egieers ca extract coarse ad detailed structural iformatio from the 3D model to simulate localized damage. Brea added that aother beefit of itegratig FE aalysis tools with a commercial desig package like SmartMarie is that 3D models ca be geerated from as-built drawigs ad other records for ships already i service. As part of the research project, Martec egieers used the Itergraph software to create a global 3D model of a Kigsto Class aval vessel. This process took about oe-third the amout of time required to make a similar model from scratch usig customized tools durig the early phase of the research. Goig operatioal Eve though the iitial research has bee completed, Martec has cotiued with plas to itroduce FE aalysis services utilizig global 3D geometric data extracted from SmartMarie models. To date, the firm has successfully applied this ew methodology for aalysis of corrosio, cathodic protectio, stress, ad hydrodyamics of commercial ad military vessels. The small craft sector is boomig i both brow water (coastal, lakes ad rivers) ad blue water (ocea) markets. Although Kimball poits out that because of the ecoomy there is somewhat less activity o the recreatioal side less sail ad powerboats but it is still a vibrat idustry. Offshore (exploratio, oil rigs, recovery, storage, etc.) is doig well right ow also. Although oe ever kows how log that boom period will last, it has bee extremely good for everyoe over the last eight to 10 years ad should cotiue for a umber of years to come. Ad, the U.S. Navy sector, which icludes submaries to aircraft carriers, has hit bottom accordig to Kimball. There are fewer ships, fewer desigers ad aval architects tha ever, ad the Navy is cocered about this. The aval fleet is 278 ships today with 50 more targeted over the ext Isight Special Issue

19 years, but there are major cocers about the loss of expertise i aval ship desig. So, takig these four sectors ito cosideratio, Kimball feels the outlook ad challeges are certaily ever-preset. There are great opportuities out there for aval ship desigers, ad as log as U.S. war efforts do t cotiue to erode those fuds, I thik you ll see a icrease i aval shipbuildig i the future, he said. There is also ample opportuity for medium-tosmall vessels that ca be built i medium-sized shipyards i the U.S. But, there will be virtually o more large ship costructio. There will be some activity but o great umbers certaily the cost of buildig a ship iteratioally ca be much more favorable i the Far East tha i the U.S. Ad because offshore is doig well, that sector is lookig for aval architects ad marie egieers. I ve see may istaces where people have trasferred from oe sector to aother because they see so much opportuity. The offshore area has absorbed those most iterested i chagig. Of course, we all kow the oil patch goes i major cycles, so at some poit there will be a dip i that cycle, Kimball said. Accordig to Kimball, the U.S. has six large shipyards owed ad operated by just two corporatios, aroud 30 to 40 medium-sized yards, ad hudreds of mom ad pop yards alog the coasts. The small-to-medium yards cotiue to have a large workforce i the U.S. probably as large as ay other sector i the world. I thik we do have a corer o small craft, he said. We ve got the techology ad capabilities i steel, alumium, FRP ad composites it s still a boomig idustry. Sophisticated tools Kimball keeps up-to-speed about the techologies available for aval architects ad marie egieers through his positio with SNAME. A aval architect today ca use these software tools quite effectively. I ve had discussios with academic people about some of the problems i teachig. There is a tug betwee teachig basic priciples of desig ad aval architecture versus teachig them how to use the programs. Most professors Phil Kimball feel studets should be grouded i the basic priciples before they start usig these software programs, he said. As for the future, Kimball reiterates that egieerig software has become very sophisticated ad the various modelig, computatioal fluid dyamics (CFD) ad desig programs will remai commoplace. With ope architectures, sychroized Europea ad America stadards ad itegrated software programs, the future is oe of iteroperability ad sharig. Although it s here today, I see commo operatig protocols ad a big shift toward virtual meetigs betwee owers, egieers, shipyards ad classificatio societies actually desigig more or less virtually. This global coectivity will save time ad moey ad be easier for everyoe, he said. Studet outreach I meetig the challege of tryig to keep the idustry vibrat ad attractig youg people ito the professio, Kimball says that SNAME is actively egaged i outreach to iterest youg people i grades K-12 i egieerig i geeral ad aval ad marie architecture, specifically. A few years ago SNAME started a program with the U.S. Navy called Natioal Naval Resposibility i Naval Egieerig. This icluded brochures ad videos for distributio to the geeral public to build attetio ad help itroduce the professio to future egieers. SNAME members were ecouraged to reach out to local schools through their guidace couselors, career days, ad presetatios to studets ad this has met great success. Also, SNAME recetly egaged with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) o a grat to work closely with the Massachusetts Istitute of Techology (MIT) to develop a project for studets to lear about the priciples of egieerig by buildig a model of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). As part of the program, the schools sciece teachers receive traiig provided at semiars led by MIT to help them uderstad the priciples ad what to teach. Studets assemble the ROVs ad test them i pools ad pods across the coutry. The kids are havig a woderful time with it ad SNAME eve has a dedicated staff member who oversees the program. This employee gives presetatios o the cocept ad delivers the kits with all the parts eeded 65 parts i all to build a ROV i approximately three to five hours. The ROV program has created a tremedous amout of iterest aroud the coutry. It s ow to the poit we just ca t keep up with it, Kimball said. Part of our missio at SNAME is to advace the sciece ad egieerig of our professio through collaborative research amog members ad techology ad research programs. Ad this studet program is right ilie with our missio. SNAME has approximately 8,500 members as well as approximately 1,200 studet members studyig at 27 uiversities offerig aval architecture curriculums. Kimball thiks that the group is o the right track to help the professio i all sectors by egagig today s youth. Although schools are graduatig fewer egieers i all disciplies, job prospects are very promisig for most sectors i aval architecture ad marie egieerig. To achieve major productivity breakthroughs, maage the accelerated speed of chages ad provide sigificat returs o ivestmet i techology ad tools, a broader, more horizotal strategy is eeded that exteds the domai across egieerig, busiess, material maagemet, ad productio systems. Give the scope of such a task, o sigle product or vedor will likely address all the requiremets. What is eeded is a scalable, ope solutio that ca serve as a itegratio ad data repository platform such that global project iformatio caot oly be created, but maaged i a cotrolled ad itegrated maer throughout the project life cycle. Effective ERP implemetatio A growig tred i the shipbuildig idustry is for shipbuilders to implemet eterprise resource plaig (ERP) systems like SAP. Oe of the keys to effective ERP implemetatio i a shipyard is effective data exchage ad itegratio betwee ERP elemets of work plaig ad material maagemet, egieerig ad desig systems, ad productio systems like estig ad shop floor maagemet. Effective itegratio ca yield up to a 8x beefit to that derived from automatio aloe (see Referece 1, page 19). This article will outlie productio-prove methodologies for implemetig effective data exchage ad itegratio betwee ERP, egieerig ad desig, ad productio systems. Required data exchages Figure 1 outlies the effective data exchages that will be the basis of the discussio. Arrow 1a represets that exchage. For ay effective data exchage to ERP s material maagemet system, there must be sychroizatio from the desig tool s material codes ad ERP s material codes. The arrow marked 1b represets the sychroizatio of material codes with ERP. Arrows 2 represet the exchage betwee productio applicatios like pipe fabricatio, plate estig ad profile estig. These applicatios create BOM (arrow 2a) ad require sychroizatio of material codes (arrow 2b). Arrow 3 represets publishig data from desig to productio applicatios. This exchage icludes part iformatio ad geometry for plate ad profile estig ad pipig materials ad coectivity for fabricatio. The data exchaged iherits material codes from ERP. Arrow 4 represets the publishig of top-dow early desig productio plaig iformatio to seed the work breakdow structure (WBS) i the ERP project services system. Arrow 5a represets WBS iformatio published from ERP to detailed desig tools so the detailed desig tools ca do further bottom-up assembly plaig. Arrow 5b represets WBS published from ERP to productio systems. Arrow 6 represets data exchage betwee desig tools for example, fuctioal-to-detailed desig for hull structure ad outfittig pipig. I the case of 1a, early i the desig cycle, the exchage is primarily for refiig steel estimates. Later it provides detailed BOM iformatio i the cotext of WBS (5a). Exchage 3 cotais the same iformatio that each idividual part cotaied i 1a, plus the additioal geometric iformatio required for estig. However, the detailed bottom-up assembly iformatio exchaged i 1a is ot required durig umber 3 data exchage. 2a cotais the idividual parts from 3 plus the additioal plate ad profile stock iformatio. Three coditios exist i this sceario: Three systems (desig, productio ad ERP) share commo iformatio about steel. The shared iformatio eeds to stay cosistet. Each system eeds to add, modify ad delete its data throughout the project life cycle while maitaiig cosistecy. Data exchages for arrow 6 i Figure 1 ofte have the same coditios. A solutio to esurig data exchaged is complete, cosistet ad correct is to have a commo techical data ad documet repository as i Figure 2 with the data exchages from Figure 1 movig i ad out of the commo repository as a cetral hub rather tha poitto-poit exchages. Material catalog sychroizatio Each piece of the itegratio triad ERP, desig ad egieerig, ad productio require differet material iformatio for their tools. Let s cosider two examples from hull ad outfittig: steel plates ad valve iformatio (Figure 3). I both examples ad for most materials, the ERP system cotais iformatio for purchasig that is ot explicitly required i desig ad productio tools. The overlap betwee estig ad 3D CAD icludes material, grade ad thickess. No additioal iformatio is required i 3D CAD. I the case of valves, 3D iformatio is required for 3D CAD while all iformatio required for itelliget P&ID is cotaied i the overlap betwee 3D CAD ad itelliget P&ID. Examples of characteristics iclude valve types ad sizes. The Itergraph SmartMarie Eterprise offers SmartPlat Referece Data to maage ad sychroize catalogs betwee ERP ad desig ad productio systems. SmartPlat Referece Data is a Web-based applicatio that offers a sigle database catalog for all disciplies ad tools. SmartMarie Eterprise offers the Web-based Egieerig & Procuremet Iterface (E&PI) module for SmartPlat Materials to maage BOM from various sources, cosolidatig them ad providig iformatio to procuremet. Itergraph SmartMarie Eterprise has a geeral purpose applicatio for maagig exchages of iformatio like WBS called SmartPlat Foudatio. SmartPlat Foudatio comes with a built-i data model for WBS, ad Itergraph s desig tools support exchage to/from this data model. This WBS exchage is used i productio at plat desig ad ower compaies like Chiyoda, Dow Chemical ad Air Products. Smart Itegratio Framework SmartPlat Foudatio allows data exchage i a variety of ways, but the preferred methodology is through the Smart Itegratio Framework.
