1 Spring Workshop This year s Intensive Spring Workshop will be composed of 4 separate workshops each designed and facilitated by one of the four ADAPT-r international research fellows in currently in residency at KU Leuven Brussels. ADAPT-r is an innovative Reflective Practice PhD program that aims to link venturous practices and academia. For more information please see this link ( It will happen between the Saturday 19 th and Thursday 24 th March There will be a closing session on Thursday evening. Each group will focus on a separate theme. You will find the description of each by following the links below (scroll down): Eric Guibert Ana Krec Petra Marguc Alicia Velazquez You will be able to participate in one of these four workshops. The deadline for expressing your preference is the 7 th March. Please keep in mind that the number of students will be equally distributed among the four workshops.
2 In architecture, vegetation is usually decorative ; buildings are either pots into which plants grow as in a green roof or a support for climbers. Earth is seen as an annoying necessity that is to be kept to a minimum. In other words, the structure only holds the organic material; it is not made out of it. During this workshop, we will investigate the opposite relation ; we will create an architecture primarily made with living material earth and plants. You will be designing architectures that are literally growing. You will experiment with innovative architectural languages and structural systems that are made out of, as well as express, a symbiotic relationship between plant communities and structure. You will be encouraged to merge your own architectural language with living matter to develop a diverse range of options. After a short presentation on how to use living plants and their roots as building material, you will be testing solutions through physical modelling at 1/20 scale made with living plants and earth. At the end of the event, these experiments will be assembled to form a large and eclectic artefact, a temple to roots, a Roots Pantheon. Tutor - Eric Guibert is an architect and environmental artist. The current focus of his research is on designing with, supporting, and expressing diverse ecosystems. He investigates blurred boundaries between natures and us by developing architectures buildings & landscapes that promote symbiotic relationships between the diversity of living beings and their environment. He is currently pursuing this through a Practice Based PhD as an ADAPT-r Research Fellow at KU Leuven. Spring Workshop 2016 WHEN March from 9:30 to 18:30 & 24 March from 9:30 to 20:00 WHERE Ghent (address to be confirmed) Further details will be ed before the workshop Although French, his architectural practice is based in London where he teaches at the University of Westminster. 4 Ana Kreč, SVET VMES RETHINKING THE IN-BETWEEN What: 5-day ADAPT-r Spring student workshop When: 19th 22nd March 2016, final review and critique: Thursday, 24th March 2016 (Location TBC) Where: Faculteit Architectuur, Campus Sint Lucas, Hoogstraat 51, Ghent, Belgium Who: 1st year MA students, max. 30 students WORKSHOP BRIEF This workshop will expose the importance of in-between spaces within the transformation of educational buildings. It will focus on mini, ad hoc, spatial interventions that have the potential to trigger not only spatial but also social change. Several questions will be highlighted, for example: How can we, by creating various spatial acupunctures make the in-between space valuable, so that it becomes hierarchically more dominant and is not just being merely there? Can we, with multiple small projects or temporary 2-dimensional installations, like tape art seed new in-between behaviours among students and staff members? Can we make them and ourselves spatially more aware? And most importantly: Can the left-over become the new identity? Keywords: in-between space, identity, acupuncture, educational buildings, placeholders, tape art. Materials: - Tapes of vibrant, neon colours and different widths (big amounts each student) - Projectors (5-6 for each group one) needed for the installations execution - Cutting knifes for tapes and models Workshop schedule: every day from 10:00 am 7:00 pm Day 1: Saturday, 19 th March Introductory lecture, 10:00 am, Ghent Campus, classroom location TBC - in-between locations mapping (5-6 different location indoors or outdoors) - Division into 5 6 groups (5/6 students in each group) - Project start - Evening get together discussion, lectures, movies on the topic, Day 2: Sunday, 20 th March Groups working on their projects, coordinating among 5-6 groups - Concept presentations, 3d models - Evening get together discussion, lectures, movies on the topic,
5 Day 3: Monday, 21 st March Groups working on their projects, coordinating among 5-6 groups - Setting 1:1 scale spatial installations tape art illusions - Evening get together discussion Day 4: Tuesday, 22 nd March Groups working on their projects, coordinating among 5-6 groups - Finalising 1:1 scale spatial installations tape art illusions - Graphical presentation of the project for an exhibition (map of the locations/installations) - Evening get together discussion - Wednesday, 23 rd March free Day 5: Thursday, 24 th March Setting up an exhibition - Public Project/Installation presentation, students presenting to the other groups - Worksop debrief - Evening drinks ABOUT SVET VMES was founded as a non-formal creative group of four young and independent architects in 2010, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, who had a similar goal to redesign the existing and create new "spaces in-between"; spaces that teach, inspire and connect people. For SVET VMES, the in-between space, represents a great design potential through which they explore and encourage spatial sensitivity among people and challenge their day to day behavioural patterns. In January 2014, three of previously four architects, Jure Hrovat, Ana Kosi and Ana Krec opened SVET VMES architectural studio, that is continuously engaged in transformation of public exterior and interior 'in-between' areas through amplification of small collective spaces, especially in educational context. SVET VMES was chosen among 10 young and promising architectural practices in Slovenia by A10 magazine and has received a 2013 Interior of the year award at the Month of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia and 2nd award for "Loggia" project at VI International Biennale of Young Architects "Leonardo 2015" in Minsk. ANA KREC, M. Arch Founding partner SVET VMES Graduated in 2009 at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, Slovenia. During her studies, she won a 1st prize at the student design competition for a low energy house Les + k. She continued her studies at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Aalborg University in Denmark. After studying abroad, she conducted a half year internship at architectural practice Terroir in Sydney, Australia. After returning home, she won 1st equivalent prize at the open architectural competition for Two Primary Schools in Kamnik, Slovenia. After graduation, she worked at architectural office SADAR + VUGA in Ljubljana, Slovenia where she collaborated on large scale redevelopments of Sports Park Stožice in Ljubljana and Cultural Centre MAKS in Maribor, Slovenia. In 2010 she co-founded the Svet vmes creative group, specializing in educational buildings architecture which has developed into an architectural practice in Since then she has been a founding partner at Svet vmes studio. From October June 2015 she worked as an assistant at Design Studio I-V of assoc. prof. Jurij Sadar (Sadar+Vuga) at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Faculty of Architecture. In 2015, she received a Marie Curie Fellowship position as a Young researcher in program ADAPT-r, at KU Leuven in Brussels, Belgium.

7 Spring Workshop MARCH 2016 SUPERNORMAL Matter strategies for the daily intangible What is normal in our everyday? How do we relate to our daily rituals? Our daily acts (eating, relaxing, socializing, going to the toilet) are so present that we often, if not always, consign to oblivion how we act within them and why. But as much as we shape these acts, they shape us. They are the skeleton that gives structure to our functioning and schedule, our social relationships, our bodies health and even to our emotional selves. In Supernormal - Matter Strategies For The Daily Intangible - we will explore the meaning and emotional connections within daily rituals, and activate alternatives by performing a material action. By paying attention to a specific ritual from three parallel perspectives - reflection, body and material - and by developing a material strategy to intervene in it, we explore: existing and new meanings within the daily invisible the potential of working with them as relationship activators: why and what they trigger individually, within a small (working) group, and in the school s public environment how the material shapes the emotional, and how can we make tangible the intangible the concept of supernormal when we simultaneously work in between the material and the immaterial. WHEN March 19, 20, 21, h & March 24th 9-20h WHERE KU Leuven Architecture Campus Sint Lucas Ghent WITH WHOM Alicia Velázquez, Architect by ETSA Madrid and current Adapt-r fellow (Art Design Architecture Practice Training research), a Marie Curie European fund, as creative practice PhD candidate with KU Leuven Architecture School in Brussels.

Selection of one daily ritual where to intervene with a supernormal interference Application of one the strategy for your interference (i.e. opposition, repetition, exaggeration, reset, choreography, instruction, transformation). Making the disturbance tangible through a material action: perform, build, draw, photograph, record, dance, write or chose any other favorite medium for your supernormal interference. WORKSHOP PRESENTATION Documentation of the process and findings, both the material and immaterial. Performing your material action, or supernormal interference Presentation on site Group reflection Preparation - PREVIOUS TO WORKSHOP 2 days: Awareness and Tiny Triggers Day 1, Awareness: Take one full day, from the moment you get up till you fall asleep. Pay attention to every single repetitive act that you take - what you do and how you do it. Take mental notice. You may also use written text, photographs, voice recording or a combination to annotate key moments or findings. between material & emotion aliciavelazquez.com

For example, get dressed starting from the opposite leg to the usual, brush your teeth with the other hand, switch the order in which you eat your lunch, take a different route to your working place. Take mental notice of your reactions. You may also use written text, photographs, voice recording or a combination to annotate key moments or findings. between material & emotion aliciavelazquez.com
10 +32 (0) Brussels +41 (0) Zürich Alicia Velázquez - BIO Architect by ETSA Madrid (1998), since 2013 I move towards the common ground between architecture, art and the body. With a focus on emotional affordances through performative material-body intimate connections, I use narrative video and photography, as well as objects, textures, textile sculptures and wearables. Some of this work has been exhibited in ICO Foundation, Madrid 2015, in Salone del Mobile, Milan, and B.D. design gallery Madrid in In my early design career, I have co-developed architectural and interior projects inside international offices like UNStudio in Amsterdam. Since 2007 I focus on the emotional between body and material, creating, together with other designers, artists and professionals temporary and permanent texture installations and exhibition concepts, like for Arup engineering s lobby in Madrid, Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, and grant-awarded (Ministry of Culture in Andalusia, Spain) temporary material intervention Softening, in the streets of Malaga in Positioning myself as emotion-centered coach and designer I ve also collaborated with numerous architecture/design teams to strengthen, through working with/from the affective, interior and texture concepts and realities. Since September 2015 I am an Adapt-r fellow (Art Design Architecture Practice Training research), a Marie Curie European fund, as creative practice PhD candidate with KU Leuven Architecture School in Brussels. between material & emotion aliciavelazquez.com
