1 University of Technology, Sydney CI Labs, Series July 2012 INTRODUCTION. The University of Technology, Sydney will offer its new CI Labs from Sunday, 15 July Thursday, 19 July Be one of the first to participate in this exciting, dynamic and immersive program, which will explore new ways to think, influence change and innovate. Experience how real issues can be addressed through design thinking. The CI Labs will bring together UTS students and staff with practitioners, academics, researchers, business leaders and entrepreneurs to test and push the boundaries of creative innovation. PROGRAM. The CI Labs main program runs for four full days. Each day will include morning and afternoon sessions. Participants will choose one of three distinct Lab streams, and remain in that stream for the duration of the program. Those in the Catalyst stream, which only runs for two days, are encouraged and welcome to attend the morning sessions on the other days as well. While the CI Labs are an intensive experience, we will take good care of you. Registration includes lunch and dinner for all participants across the four days. AM. Out of the Ordinary master classes CI Lab participants will attend morning master classes, designed to inspire, provoke and offer new knowledge. There will be two master classes each morning, providing participants with insight into the depths of various forms of innovation practice from design and visual media to robotics and knowledge platforms of the future. Guest presenters include internationally acclaimed creative practitioners, researchers and thought leaders. PM. Lab streams The afternoons are for involvement: action, reflection and learning. Participants separate into their chosen CI Lab and remain in these for the duration of the series, where they will work through assignments with the guidance and expertise of their CI Lab directors. The Labs are hands-on and immersive expect to be challenged and surprised!
2 . Three CI Labs, with differing approaches to design thinking, will run concurrently in Series 1. Participants will select from one of the following: ONE >. Frame Creation. How do you solve the unsolvable the wicked problems facing your organisation or community? Use design thinking to re-frame and re-think for better solutions. Timeframe. Monday, 16 July Thursday, 19 July 2012 For. Professionals and those who want to experience a new method of design thinking The concentrates on the design process. This lab takes a hands-on approach: you will work through a Frame Creation methodology to develop solutions to the really hard problems that face today s networked society. You will 'solve the unsolvable' by re-forming, re-thinking and re-doing, creating new approaches to problems that confront and confound governments, companies and other organisations. Directed by. Over the course of four days, your focus will shift from these concrete problem-solving projects towards exploring deeper issues that inform fundamental transformations concerning meaning and value. What skills and knowledge are needed to support successful frame creation and transformation? What is the nature of the artistic mentality that drives these processes, and how can that be nurtured in an organisation? How can organisations abandon old ideas, structures, processes and habits and create new ones without falling into the trap of chaotic trial-and-error? On the final day, you will concentrate on anchoring this new thinking in your own organisation and broader society. Professor Kees Dorst PROFESSOR OF DESIGN, FACULTY OF DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & BUILDING DIRECTOR, DESIGNING OUT CRIME RESEARCH CENTRE Kees Dorst is Professor of Design in the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building and Director of the Designing Out Crime Research Centre. He has worked as a designer, consultant, manager of several design firms and editor of a leading design magazine. His research focuses on the way designers think and work. His publications include five books, the most recent being Understanding Design 175 reflections on being a designer (2006) and Design Expertise (2009) with Bryan Lawson. Currently he is working on an invited book for MIT Press on Frame Creation - a design-based methodology for driving innovation. Professor Dick Rijken PROFESSOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY, HAGUE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES, THE NETHERLANDS DIRECTOR, STEIM (STUDIO FOR ELECTRO-INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC), THE NETHERLANDS Dick Rijken is a professor of Information Technology and Society at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands, and director of STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music), the only independent live electronic music centre in the world exclusively dedicated to the performing arts. He is the chairman of the e-culture committee of the Dutch Culture Council, co-chair of the European Union working group on Cultural and Creative Industries, and a board member of NoAcademy - Laboratory for Art & Society, a post-graduate program in social design.
3 TWO >. How do you generate new ideas and explore new approaches through collective creativity and collaboration? Introducing design thinking and boundary-spanning skills. Timeframe. Monday, 16 July Thursday, 19 July 2012 For. Professionals and those interested in learning about human centred, collaborative creativity introduces and explores design thinking as an innovation method. Combining approaches found in design and ethnography, with technology and business skills found in strategic and innovation management, will offer a hybrid approach for idea generation and innovation. Current economic conditions have taught us that we need fresh ideas and perspectives, which can only be achieved by thinking in new, broad and integrative ways. And these good ideas and new perspectives require a chemistry of their own. At the lab, we will create an environment that nudges and blurs the traditional boundaries of design teams. We will encourage you to use entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary thinking and experimentation to solve the problems of the future. You will use rapid pace ideation and prototyping to bring new ideas and thought styles into their innovation process. Directed by. Dr Joanne Jakovich SENIOR LECTURER, FACULTY OF DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & BUILDING CO-FOUNDER, U.LAB Joanne Jakovich is a Senior Lecturer in the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building and a co-founder of the u.lab. 4 THREE > Catalyst. How do you conceive of, and effectively implement, the way you lead change and innovation? Understanding how to use design as a catalyst for transformation within organisations. Timeframe. Tuesday, 17 July Wednesday,18 July 2012 For. Entrepreneurs, executives, and all those who are responsible for leading a culture of innovation Directed by. Catalyst focuses on how to use the practice and principles of design and language to frame and shape strategy-driven business initiatives. In the first afternoon session, clarity of purpose is the goal. We will concentrate on building a proper definition of the problem space, using real-world challenges identified by the participants. The second afternoon session concentrates on the design methodologies required to turn that purpose into a reality. Along with the specific tools presented throughout the course, participants will discuss the challenges inherent in leading change and innovation initiatives inside an organisation unwilling or simply unable to break from rigid habits and thinking, and bad behaviours. Maureen Thurston PRINCIPAL, DELOITTE TOUCHE TOHMATSU, AUSTRALIA A designer, educator, entrepreneur, lecturer, author and consultant, Maureen has helped organisations capture design s aggregate value for over 30 years.
