2 ABOUT Form is an interface between function and user, a way to communicate a product s physical and physchological features. The success of a product depends highly on the quality of this communication. Form Study: Design & Make a Toothbrush is a five day intensive workshop which invites students and faculty to discover the logic behind form development through a hands on process of designing and making a toothbrush. The workshop aims to equip the participants with the knowledge and the practice of how functions and meanings shape the products we use in our daily lives through a series of idea generation, form development and final production process for toothbrush. SCOPE Throughout the workshop we will address the following questions: How can we uncover hidden needs and behaviours to inspire unique ideas, forms and products? How are functions and meanings translated into forms that define the aesthetics of a product? How can we develop an identity and a strong aesthetic character for a product with the technical and manufacturing requirements in mind? 1

3 OUTCOMES The outcomes of this workshop will be: Exchange of knowledge and methods on form development and idea generation which could be highly transferable to any product design process. Learning and seeing design from a different design education perspective. Designing and making a highly finished toothbrushes which are ready to take place in product portfolios and production. JOIN IN Workshop is open to all design students and faculties who are interested in form development, idea generation and improving their design skills. 9 LECTURERS Erdem Selek is Assistant Professor at Iowa State University, department of Industrial Design where he teaches design studio and lecture courses on creativity and product usability since Erdem began his career as a product designer working in various projects ranging from domestic appliances to naval architecture in Germany and Turkey and he pursued his academic career in Turkey, France and finally in New Zealand, where he taught industrial design for 5 years at Massey University before moving to the United States. Hale Selek is an industrial designer and lecturer. She had been sharing her passion for design beyond borders and domains, at two universities and a range of departments including engineering, industrial design, product development and visual communication design in New Zealand between 2009 and Currently she teaches at Iowa State University, industrial design department, giving design studio courses of undergraduate and graduate levels. Having an experience in design education for non-designers and designers, following her natural inclination towards experimental designs, enjoying the detailing part in product design the most, Hale would like to walk you through creative ways of designing everyday objects and transfer her knowledge on form development and making. 8
