Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 3 Inventry and Srt Welcme t yur Amr Ministries building prject! This is yur guide t the cnstructin prcess. It is cntinually updated, s even if this is nt yur first prject, please read these instructins t familiarize yurself with recent changes. If this is yur first prject, we recmmend that yu keep this entire manual handy, alng with the tri-fld Site Freman s Guide, which cntains gd tips fr getting yur entire build crew invlved. They are bth designed t help yu prgress step-by-step thrugh the cnstructin prcess. STEP 1. AT THE SITE The hmewner has already determined where the hme is t be built. They have taken int cnsideratin their neighbrs, existing structures, and their family s needs. Please make every effrt t hnr their requests. It s always helpful t sketch ut the flr plan, including the psitining f drs and windws in accrdance with the family s wishes. They have already wrked t level the wrk site. Clear the area fr the slab. Dn t assume anything; ask where t place all items cleared frm the wrk area. Check fr a water surce in case the family is relying n deliveries r brrwed barrels. STEP 2. MATERIAL INVENTORY In the days prir t yur arrival, all the materials fr the prject were delivered t the wrk site. Using the material checklist prvided belw, lcate and inventry everything necessary t cmplete the prject. 10 kgs. - 1 bag 1 ¼ in. Rfing nails (Tachuelas) 1 Brush (Brcha) 1 galln Rfing tar (Brea en fri) 6 meters Sand and gravel (Arena y grava) 2 Windws (Ventanas) 1 Dr (Puerta) 3 Hinges (Visagras) 1 Dr knb (Chapa) 6 Family prvides water barrels (La familia prprcina tambs de agua) STEP 3. SEPARATE AND SORT THE LUMBER The mst cmmn mistake ccurs when cutting lumber and plywd. It is very imprtant t avid cutting the 12 ft. 2x4s needed fr the rf. Find 18 straight and strng 12 ft. bards fr the rf (n large knts r splits). Mark and set them aside s that they wn t be cut r used fr anything else. * Nte: Check 8 fters and 12 fters fr unifrm length! * See site Freman s Guide fr mre time saving tips. NAIL DIAGRAMS 1 ¼ in. 4 Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 4 YOU WILL NEED: 7 12 ft. tw-by-furs 2 8 ft. tw-by-furs 18 Stakes kg. Bags f cement r kg. Bags 18 Mud sill anchrs 1 Large pile f sand and gravel 4 Barrels f water (r mre) 3 Bags f High Tech fiber penny nails STEP 1. LEVEL THE GROUND (DIAGRAM 1 = D1) It is wise t level an area at least 6 in. larger than the 11 ft. x 22 ft. fundatin. Allw 2 ft. f wrk space arund the utside f the fundatin s that yu have rm fr wrking. If yu dn t have enugh rm, cnsult yur Amr Team Member. STEP 2. BUILD THE FOUNDATION FORM (D1) Use six 12 ft. 2x4s t cnstruct the frm. If at all pssible, d nt cut these! They will be used later in the building prcess. Fllwing Diagram 1, put the frm tgether, using tw 16-penny nails in each crner jint. The interir dimensin shuld equal 11 ft. x 22 ft., s that the finished slab will equal 11 ft. x 22 ft. Use an 8 ft. 2x4 t cnnect the 12 fters tgether fr the tw 22 ft. sides. If yu must cut a 12 fter t fit jb circumstances, use the piece later as the tp r bttm plate fr a rake wall. STEP 3. SQUARE, STRAIGHTEN, AND LEVEL THE FORM (D1) Measure diagnally frm crner t crner, as shwn in Diagram 1. The frm is square when the tw crss-measurements are equal. After the tw crss measurements are equal, stake arund the utside f each crner f the frm t hld it in place. D nt put any nails in the stakes at this pint. After yur frm bards are square, the bards need t be straightened. Use a string line frm end t end as a guide. Secure a stake n the utside f the frm where the bard is even and straight with the string line. Yu will need at least three secured stakes fr each 11 ft. sectin. D nt put any nails in the stakes at this pint. T level the frm, it helps t establish ne crner at permanent height. Set a level in that crner sectin and nail the stakes t the frm when it is level. Frm there wrk yur way arund the frm with the level in each 11 ft. sectin, crner and splice. Nail the stakes t the frm when that area is level. Ntes: SLAB

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 5 STEP 4. DIG A FOOTING TRENCH AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE FORM (D2) The fting anchrs the fundatin t the grund and keeps it frm shifting. The trench shuld be n larger than 8 in. wide x 10 in. deep measured frm the TOP f the frm. Use a rund shvel fr this step. Square tip shvels make the trenches t big. STEP 5. LEVEL THE SOIL (D2) Place a 12 ft. 2x4 n edge acrss the tp f the frm, and measure the distance frm the bttm f the 2x4 t the leveled grund. This will shw hw thick the cement will be. Add r remve dirt until the distance is between 3 and 4 inches. Nte: Sft grund will cmpact when yu walk n it. Make sure the grund is cmpact when measuring the slab depth s the slab will nt be t thick. Yu can use a 2x4 (actually 3½ in. wide) n edge t measure the gap underneath. Yu can nail an 8ft. 2x4 n edge t the bttm f the 12 ft. bard t create a depth gauge fr leveling the pad area. An inverted steel rake whse pints are apprximately 3 ½ in. high can als be dragged under the 12 fter as a depth gauge fr leveling the dirt. D1 STEP 6. MIX THE CONCRETE When the frm is level and square, it s time t mix. Mix in a wheelbarrw, r in a mixing bin. The rati is: five shvels f sand and gravel t every ne shvel f cement; make sure t be cnsistent with the size f scps. Larger amunts can be mixed as lng as the rati is 5:1. If rcks and sand are separate r if the pile is unevenly mixed, try t use three sand and tw rck t every ne cement. Add the High Tech fibers at 1/5 bag f fiber t ne sack f cement. Use all three bags t cmplete the slab. This means yu shuld have used ne bag f fiber by the time yu cmplete 1/3 f the slab. If nt, increase the amunt f fiber yu re adding t the mix. Cmpletely mix the dry materials befre adding water, achieving an even clr and texture. Add water gradually and mix until a cnsistency f atmeal is attained. Pur the cncrete int the frm, wrking frm ne end t the ther, leveling as yu g. Dn t bump the frm ut f square r level! Cncrete can get pretty hectic. It helps t lay a 12 ft. bard acrss the frm (starting perhaps 2 ft. away frm ne end) and instruct wrkers t dump cncrete nly n the ppsite side. STEP 7A. TAMP AND SCREED THE CONCRETE (D2) This is the prcess which creates a flat, level surface f cncrete. Once yu have pured a cuple feet f cncrete, take a straight 12 ft. 2x4 (this is yur screed bard) and place it n edge at the 8 8

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 6 beginning f yur slab. Tamp the cncrete by lifting ne end f the screed bard and striking the cncrete (alternate sides). This frces rcks dwn frm the surface and brings water up. Tamp rhythmically (and firmly), wrking frm the beginning t the leading edge f the pured cncrete. Make sure that bth ends f the screed bard tuch the frm; if they dn t, yu must remve cncrete t make it level. After tamping, screed the surface as fllws: tw peple shuld take the same bard, start again at the beginning, and saw the bard back and frth between them, mving slwly tward the leading edge f cncrete (See Diagram 2). Keep the bard in cntact with the frm. This will push a lt f cncrete ff the tp, and may require anther persn t help pull cncrete away. It may take several passes t make the surface smth, and yu may need t screed it again later if it is disturbed, r puddles f water frm n the surface. STEP 7B. PLACE THE MUD SILL ANCHORS (D1 & D3) Anchrs are used t secure the walls f the huse t the fundatin (Diagram 1). As yu pur cncrete dwn the frm, yu can place anchrs in the area already tamped and screeded. The mud sill anchrs are placed 10 in. frm each crner and equally spaced alng the edge f the slab, three anchrs in each 11 ft. sectin (See Diagrams 1 & 2). DO NOT PLACE AN ANCHOR IN YOUR DOORWAY! STEP 7C. TROWEL THE CONCRETE Cncrete at this pint can be very different depending n quality and carseness f materials, timing and quality f screeding, and time f day and temperature. If the surface after screeding is still rcky, tamp it again and mre firmly! Next, yu will need t trwel it with flats (trwels made f wd r magnesium) t get an even surface. Once the surface is fairly smth, it is best t leave it alne fr 20 t 30 minutes. The best finish is btained when the cncrete has been allwed t dry until it is n lnger shiny. When yu are ready, use finish trwels (large, smth metal trwels) t make the surface cmpletely smth. Using scrap wd t stand n, begin frm the center f the slab and wrk yur way ut, smthing ver yur wn bard marks as yu mve. Apply a little water where necessary (spray bttles are handy). Tip up the leading edge f the trwel and use lts f dwnward pressure. This is the secret t gd finish trweling. Use the trwel as yu wuld a butter knife: mre angle fr scraping, less angle fr smearing. D PROPER ANCHOR PLACEMENT!

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 7 FRAMING YOU WILL NEED: Ntes: ft. tw-by-furs 83 8 ft. tw-by-furs ½ bx 16-penny nails The huse is built using seven separate wall sectins. Fur walls are 11 ft. lng with straight tps. Three walls are 10 ft. 5 in. lng and have slping tps; these are called rake walls. After the materials are srted, yu may build the walls in any rder. Try t develp a system that wrks best fr yur team. Fllw the basic design s that yu d nt run shrt f materials. STEP 1. BUILDING A STANDARD WALL Sketch ut a flr plan with the family fr the lcatin f drs, windws, and pitch f the rf. Of the fur standard walls, tw will be built with 8 ft. studs and tw with 7 ft. studs. Nte: Always use 16-penny nails t cnnect 2x4s! STEP 2A. STANDARD 8-FOOT WALL WITHOUT DOORS OR WINDOWS (D4 & D5) Tw 11 ft. 2x4s will be used as plates and nine 8 ft. 2x4s are needed fr studs. Place the tw 11 ft. bards face-t-face n edge, flush n bth ends. Measure alng the bards and make a mark n bth bards every 2 ft. On the right side f each mark place an X. Place an X n each end f bth bards, as well. The 8 ft. studs are placed between the 11 ft. plates, n the X and next t the 2 ft. mark. Nail the studs t the plates using 16- penny nails (the largest), tw nails in every jint (See Diagrams 4 & 5). Repeat the prcess t build anther 8 ft. wall and tw 7 ft. walls. Sme studs have nly three crners. Make sure the gd side f the studs face ut fr the nrmal studs. Fr the Califrnia crners, the gd side shuld face the inside f the huse Only use 2x4s with cmplete r square edges fr the rugh penings f the dr r windws. STEP 2B. ADD A DOOR OPENING TO A WALL (D6 & D7)!!!DOOR SIZE WILL VARY!!! Measure the utside dimensins f yur dr. Make yur drway is 2 in. wider than the dr and ¾ in. taller than the dr, remember yu will cut the bttm plate ut f the drway after the walls are up, s measure accrdingly.. (See Diagrams 6 & 7). If the family wants a dr centered in a wall sectin, center it within the sectin, using whatever methd seems best, but make sure that the rugh pening fr the dr is the prper width and the prper height.

STEP 2C. ADD A WINDOW OPENING TO A WALL (D8 & D9) First, verify the style f yur prject s windws Nt all but mst Windws used by Amr Ministries are 24 tall by 48 wide. T frame the windw pening Cut tw pieces f 2X4 t 24 lng. Sme f The windws we use have a channel n either side that yu will slide the tw pieces yu just cut int.!check windw style! Nt all f the windws we receive frm ur vendrs have a channel Nw measure frm the utside f the wd acrss the windw t the utside f the ther side t get yur width, and measure frm the bttm f the windw t the tp and this measurement will be yur height. Add a ½ nt these measurements and this will be yur rugh windw pening. (Example: If the windw size is 24 wide by 36 tall, yu will frame the pening 24 ½ X 36 ½ ) Measure frm the bttm f the bttm plate, mark the tw studs at 4ft. this will be the inside f the bttm plate fr yur windw pening. Nail a bard measuring a half inch larger than yur actual windw size belw this line and then measure frm there t get the psitin f yur tp bard. (See Diagrams 8&9) STEP 3. ADD THE CALIFORNIA CORNERS (D11 & D4 D10) On bth ends f each 11 ft. straight wall sectin, add a Califrnia crner. This is dne by placing a 2x4 at right angles t the utside stud. Nail int the 11 ft. plate at bth ends and t the utside stud in at least three places (See Diagram 11 r Diagrams 4 thrugh Diagram 10 shaded areas indicate Califrnia crners). When the walls are raised, the Califrnia crners must be flush t the inside f the huse. at the 2 ft., 4 ft., 6 ft. levels, and alternate nailing the fire blcks n the tp r bttm f the line giving a staggered difference f 1¾ in. n each blck (See Diagram 4-10). D nt allw fire blcks that are t lng t bulge end wall studs r dr and windw penings. Als, there are tw exceptins where fur fire blcks are needed (See Diagrams 12 & 16). STEP 6. BUILD THE ROOF SECTIONS (D18) Take the ft. 2x4s that were laid aside earlier and cut 14 bards t 11 ft. 9 in. Make sure the remaining fur 2x4s are exactly 12 ft. If yu have less than 18 f the 12 ft. bards r if all were cut t 11 ft. 9 in. in errr, cnsult yur Amr Team Member. Take tw f the 12 ft. 2x4s and place them face-t-face n edge, flush n bth ends. Measuring frm ne end, make a mark every 2 ft. n bth 12 ft. bards. Nail an 11 ft. 9 in. 2x4 centered n each mark. This is different than the walls, and is abslutely crucial if the plywd is t fit the rf well. Finally, nail three 21¾ in. 2x4s between the first and secnd rafters, spaced 3 ft. apart n ne end nly f each rf square. These are called utriggers and are fr the supprt f the utside rafter. N fire blcks are needed n the rf, nly bird blcks (Phase Tw-B, Step 5) and utriggers. Build tw identical sectins at these specificatins (See Diagram 18). Bird blcks may be pre-measured, pre-cut and numbered t each pening t speed up later assembly. D nt install bird blcks until the rf sectins have been placed n the walls, squared, and nailed dwn. NOTES: STEP 4. BUILD THREE RAKE WALLS (D12-D17) Cnsult with the family regarding the placement f any drs (especially the interir rake wall drway) r windws in the rake walls and then refer t Steps 2b and 2c. Start with a 10 ft. 5 in. 2x4, a 10 ft. 5 5/8 in. 2x4, an 8 fter, and a 7 fter. The 10 ft. 5 5/8 in. bard will be the tp plate f the wall and the 10 ft. 5 in. will be the bttm plate. Nail these tgether (Diagram 12 17).Square the tw bttm crners and nail a blck diagnally acrss each t keep it square. Make marks every 2 ft. n the 10 ft. 5 in. side, as yu did fr the 11 ft. walls. Select ne very straight 8 ft. 2x4 and place ne end n each mark in turn. Square this bard with the bttm plate, than mark it at the tp plate t indicate where the stud shuld be nailed. Then measure the distance between tp and bttm and cut a different bard t fit. Keep the straight bard fr measuring each stud. Repeat t build tw mre walls. Rake walls d nt need Califrnia crners. STEP 5. ADD FIRE BLOCKS TO THE WALLS (D4 D17) Fire blcks are necessary t make the huse mre rigid, and t prvide a place t nail the uter cvering f the huse t the walls. Put three fire blcks between every tw studs in every wall, except fr the interir (center) rake wall. The fire blcks shuld be spaced 2 ft. apart and staggered slightly fr easier nailing. Mark Amr Cme. 17 Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 17 YOU WILL NEED: ft. ne-by-furs 9 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets f plywd 4 rlls Black felt paper 4 rlls Sand and tar rfing paper ½ bx 1½ in. rfing nails ¼ bx 8-penny nails 2 rlls Bailing wire 2 rlls Chicken wire 1 gal Cld tar & brush penny nails 16 8 in. tw-by-furs 8 Hurricane Straps Wall Prep & Rfing Ntes STEP 1. STANDING UP THE WALLS T ensure that the walls will be straight, yu can make straight lines n the slab with a chalk line. G t each crner f the fundatin. Mark 3½ in. in frm the utside edge f the slab in bth directins. Use the marks t snap chalk lines arund the slab. Take ne f the 11 ft. walls and stand it n the slab alng the 22 ft. chalk line. Cnsult yur flr plan again t make sure it is in the crrect psitin. The Califrnia crners shuld be n the inside f the huse. Line up the end f the wall with the utside edge f the fundatin. D nt nail any anchrs until all walls are in place. The next wall t stand is an end rake wall. This will als be lined up with the chalk line, and between the inside edges f the 11 ft. walls (See Diagram 4, TOP VIEW). This is why the rake walls are built with a 10 ft. 5 in. bttm plate, s that it will fit between the 11 ft. walls. Stand the rake wall and nail it t the first wall, using tw 16-penny nails (side-by-side) every 2 ft. Make sure t nail int studs whenever pssible, as well as Califrnia crners. Stand and nail the rest f the walls. Be certain that the interir center wall is in place prir t getting all f the utside walls std. Nail the center rake wall s that it is centered n the jint where tw 11 ft. walls meet (See Diagram 11, TOP VIEW). Once all f the walls are std and nailed tgether, Square the bttm f the huse by using the same methd f crss taping as yu did when squaring the frms fr the slab. STEP 2. NAIL IN THE MUD SILL ANCHORS Once all walls are up, finish centering the structure n the slab. When the final psitin is assured, fld the mud sill anchrs ver the plates and nail them in with 8-penny nails. CAUTION! Anchrs can have sharp edges. Except fr the threshld, drive a few 16-penny nails thrugh the bttm plate in t the slab t secure the rake wall t the flr. D the same n either side f the dr pening. STEP 3. PLUMB AND BRACE ALL WALLS T plumb a wall, place a level vertically n the utside f the wall at a crner and check t see if it is straight. With the bttm f the wall secured, mve the tp f the wall back and frth until it is plumb. Brace the wall by nailing an 8 ft. 2x4 frm the crner stud t the bttm plate diagnally acrss the inside f the wall. D this n all seven walls. It is essential fr safety. Duble check windw and dr penings fr accuracy.

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 18 STEP 4. DOOR INSTALLATION Determine which way the hmewner wuld like the dr t swing and pre-hang the dr n a 2x4 hinge plate with the pins n tp. Cut ut the bttm plate. Center the dr in the rugh pening and nail the stud directly t the adjacent stud in the rugh pening using nly a cuple f 16-penny nails. Check the full swing f the dr and be sure there is ¼ in. f clearance all the way arund. If the dr swings prperly finish the installatin by installing the lck set. D nt install 1x4 trim until step 17! STEP 5. PLACE THE ROOF SECTIONS ON TOP OF THE WALLS (D19) The utriggers rest ver the utside rake walls. Once the tw sectins are resting n tp, nail them nly t each ther s that they are even. Center this jint abve the middle rake wall. Leave an equal verhang n the 22 ft. sides f the huse. Use a string line r a gd eye t make sure yur rf line is straight, and dn t trust the tp f the wall t be straight! Nail the high side f each rafter int the tp plate f the wall in bth directins (tenail), using tw 16-penny nails per rafter. Finish squaring the rf by crss-measuring befre nailing dwn the lw side f the rf. When the rf is square, nail the utriggers and the lw side f each rafter t the huse in the same manner. If yu d nt have 30 ft. tape measures, measure frm the tp utside crners t the furthest rafter n the ppsite edge. The rf shuld nt be mre than ½ in. ut f square. Lcate all 8 hurricane srtaps in yur materials. The straps are installed inside the huse with 8-penny nails. A single huse has tw rf panels. The hurricane straps shuld be placed in all fur crners f each rf panel (See Diagram 19). STEP 6. PLACE BIRD-BLOCKS ON THE ROOF (D20) Nail blcks between each f the rf rafters and each f the utriggers directly ver the tp f the wall flush with the utside f the wall (See Diagram 20). This is t prevent wind and birds frm getting int the huse after the plywd is n the rf. This step must be well under way befre starting Step 7. The blcks are much harder t add after the plywd is n. Since nly a few peple will be wrking n bird blcks, this is a great time fr the rest f the crew t make tar squares (Step 14) and t start the bailing wire prcess (Step 11). STEP 7. POSITION THE PLYWOOD ON THE ROOF (D21) Stagger the plywd n the rf (Diagram 21). The ends f each sheet shuld meet tgether in the middle f a rafter. Cut a sheet f plywd in half fr the ends f the middle rw (Place cut edge ut). Pre-nail the crners f the plywd leaving the nail sticking up ¼ in. D nt cmpletely sink any nails until the three rws f plywd are installed. This allws warped rafters t be adjusted as each rw falls int place. Nail fur 8-penny nails in each rafter per sheet. Never have mre than 1000 lbs. r five peple n the rf, and avid standing in a grup. It helps t use a chalk line when laying plywd. This ensures that the plywd will fit the rf squarely. Make chalk lines hrizntally acrss the rafters at fur and eight feet (the lng hrizntal lines in Diagram 21). If plywd sheets dn t meet n a rafter, it is ften because f warped rafters. Yu shuld crrect the rafter, straightening it while yur partner nails. In cases where this is nt enugh, yu shuld measure and cut a secnd rafter t be nailed adjacent t the rafter in questin. This shuld als be dne t rafters which are split r have knts. Ntes:

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 19

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 20 STEP 8. LAY THE FELT PAPER ON THE ROOF (D22) After the plywd is securely nailed dwn, lay the black felt paper n the rf. Begin n the lw side f the rf. Allw n mre than 3 in. f paper t verhang each edge f the rf. Anything lnger than 3 in. will need t be trimmed later. Once the rw is straight and as flat as pssible, nail the verhang dwn every ne ft alng the utside edges f the rf frame and every 2 ft. int a rafter alng the tp edge f the paper, using the 1 ½ in. rfing nails. D nt nail the verhang thrugh the plywd but rather thrugh the side f the 2x4 rf frame (Diagram 22). The next rw verlaps the first by 3 in. On sme rws, the paper rll will run ut befre the rw is cmpleted. Simply cntinue with a new rll and verlap the ld sectin by 1 ft. If yu think yu are behind yu can d this step at any ther pint f the building prcess even while yu are stuccing. STEP 9. LAY THE ROLLED SAND-AND-TAR ROOFING PAPER ON THE ROOF (D23) Fllw the same pattern used fr the felt, but nail the lwer edge f the first rw f paper every 1 ft. n the utside edges f the rf frame and the tp edge every 2 ft. Make sure there are n waves r bubbles in the rfing paper, r else water will build up n the rf and cause leaks. Rfing paper has a lt f sand glued t the frnt. It s easiest t cut frm the back f the paper. Carefully drive the nails with a smth face hammer s they dn t rip the paper. Unlike the felt paper, the sand and tar paper requires sme cld tar. After laying dwn each rw, tar the tp 2 in. f the paper s that the next rw will cver it. Use a stick t pull the tar ut f the can. A brush is prvided t smth ut the tar. Nail alng the tar line verlap every 2-3 in. Make sure t use an unbrken rll f paper n each rw. STEP 10. TRIM THE ROOF EDGE Overlap the 1x4 s it meets flush at the crners f the rf. Take the 1x4 bards and nail them with 8-penny nails, tw nails every tw feet, arund the face f the rf edge, cvering the verlap f paper. Flush the 1x4 with the bttm f the utside rafter. This will prevent the paper frm being weathered ff the edges f the rf. Use smth face hammers! Cut ff any paper which prtrudes beneath the 1x4. After the rf is trimmed and everyne is ff the rf, tar the nail heads n the rfing paper with the extra tar.

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 21

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 22 STEP 11. PREPARE BAILING WIRE Bailing wire is needed as backing fr the felt paper n the walls. Using rfing nails drive the nails in halfway t allw the wire t be wrapped arund them. The nails shuld be placed vertically in a line, 5 in. apart, n the end studs f every exterir wall sectin (six sectins ttal) and vertically n the sides f windw and dr penings. D nt wire acrss dr r windw penings. Wire shuld be strung tightly, and as free f kinks and bends as pssible. This step definitely calls fr beying the spirit f the technique, nt the letter. What yu re trying t achieve is a wall cvered with wire with n vertical gaps greater than 5 in. This step can be dne befre the walls are std, hwever, d nt tighten (Step 12) the bailing wire until the wall sectin is plumbed and braced. STEP 12. TIGHTEN THE BAILING WIRE (D24) Tighten the wire by pulling up, clse t the stud, n each wire and nail the wire int place. Mve t the first stud which has nt been nailed. Tighten the wire by pulling up n each wire that crsses the stud and nail the wire int place. G t the next stud and push dwn n each wire and nail. Alternate this pattern until yu reach the end f the wall. D nt verstretch the wire, and d nt pull with hammers (See Diagram 24). STEP 13. MAKING THE TAR SQUARES Yur grup des nt need t make r use tar squares unless yu believe wind might blw the tar paper ff, r if yu plan t leave the paper up vernight withut installing chicken wire. Plain rfing nails r a staple gun can be used instead f tar squares. Tar squares are made frm narrw strips f black felt paper and rfing nails and will be used later t secure the felt paper t the utside f the walls. Cut a strip f felt paper abut 1 in. wide. Fld it ver itself twice s that yu have a 1 in. square f felt paper three layers thick and push the tip f a rfing nail thrugh the center f it. This is knwn as a tar square and yu will need abut ne full bucket. STEP 14. PUT FELT PAPER ON THE WALLS (D24) An easy methd f applying felt paper is t pre-cut ft. 6 in. pieces. Start n the bttm and wrk yur way up. Be sure t cver the tp and bttm plates. Align ne f the precut pieces with the lwer edge f the bttm plate and run it full length. Make sure there are n bubbles r rips and nail with tar squares, ne per ft n each stud. Overlap the bttm rw by n mre than 3 in. with the next rw up. Nail each rw the same way. If the paper has guidelines r ther ink n ne side, be sure t place that side facing the utside f the huse, as the inside f the walls may nt be finished. Three rws f paper shuld cver a wall. On the rake walls, hang the tp piece f felt paper at an angle, flush

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 23 with upper edge f the tp plate. If yu d each wall separately, be sure ne-side wraps arund the crner t avid pen seams. It helps t nail the tp edge f a rw f paper first, and let gravity help yu with the rest as yu nail acrss the middle and bttm f the paper. Cut paper flush frm windw and dr penings. Yu can repair hles in the paper quite easily. Just slip a scrap piece f tar paper behind the hle, between the paper and the bailing wire. Sme teams prefer duct tape and bring their wn. Lse bailing wire can leave deep pckets in the felt paper fr stucc. Rlled scraps f felt paper can be wrked int slack areas between bailing wire and paper t push ut bubbles fr flatter stucc surface. STEP 15. STRETCHING THE CHICKEN WIRE (D25) Tw rws f chicken wire will cver every wall sectin. The wire shuld be as tight as pssible, with n bubbles, r gaps larger than a nrmal (hexagnal) chicken wire hle. This is the mst efficient methd we have fund fr stretching chicken wire: Prepare the tp and bttm f all the walls with a rw f rfing nails in the tp and bttm plates, 6 in. apart; leave the nail heads sticking ut ¼ in. Beginning in the drway leaving 1 ft. f extra material, wrap the huse with ne cntinuus piece ending at the same drway with the same amunt f extra material. Tightly (be sure it s straight t) hk the bttm (duble-strand) wire t the nails and finish the nails in the bttm plate all the way arund the huse. The wire will be sagging ff the huse. D nt wrry. G t the fur crners f the huse and stretch the wire up the wall as far as pssible and nail it. Once the crners have been stretched, mve nt the dr pening. Stretch the wire in the same way and finish nailing the dr frame every 4 in. Nw, wrking yur way frm stud t stud, starting in the middle f each wall sectin, estimate the distance yu can stretch the wire. Place a nail in the stud, ¼ in. expsed, then stretch the wire and hk the tp (duble-strand) wire nt the nail. Finish the nail ff befre mving t the next stud. Yu will find bubbles under a stretched stud can be remved when stretching at the next stud. After the entire wall is stretched, add nails, ne every ft vertically n each stud, and tw nails n each fire blck. With a new rll f wire, in the same way hang the secnd rw f chicken wire frm the tp plate, beginning in the middle f the dr. Leave enugh extra material t verlap the seam at the dr. Fllw the same prcedure as befre in stretching the wire dwn the wall. Befre cutting the wire ut f the drways and windws, thrughly nail chicken wire every 4 in. arund penings t maintain the tensin in the wire. If yu still have bubbles in the chicken wire after yur best stretching effrts ask an Amr Team Member fr guidance. STEP 16. WINDOW INSTALLATION Be sure t check and see that the windw is placed right side up with the latch lcking dwn and n the inside. Then slide the windw int place frm the utside f the huse. Finally, nail the windw int place with the shrt, green 8-penny nails; drive the nails thrugh the flange and int the studs that frame the rugh pening. Be sure t remve the sliding prtin f the windw while yu d this. Yu may find that it s hard t drive the nail all the way in due t the way the windw is built. Take a 16-penny nail and turn it upside dwn t be used as a nail punch.!! D Nt Trim The Windws!! We d nt prvide enugh material t trim the ut the windws. STEP 17. TRIM THE DOOR (D26) The 1x4 acts as a drstp. Using 8-penny nails, surrund the inside f the dr jam with 1x4 trim. This will als act as a place fr the stucc t end at the dr. Cut and fit the 1x4 such that it slides sideways int the dr jamb, the 1 in. side butting up against the dr (See Diagram 26). Use a smth face hammer when nailing the trim. Ntes:

Amr Cme. Build. Hpe. Single Huse (01-18) 25 STUCCO Yu Will Need: Ntes: kg. Bags f cement (first cat) r 6 50 kg. Bags kg. Bags f cement (secnd cat) r 5 50 kg. Bags 2 Barrels f water (minimum) Remaining sifted sand STEP 1. SIFT THE SAND Using a screen, sift the rcks ut f the remaining sand. Even if yu built the huse yurself, this is a gd time t perfrm a final check f the walls. Remve any chicken-wire bubbles (See Tw-B, Step 13), check fr thrugh nailing f each stud and fire blck, and repair any tar paper (See Tw-B, Step 12) r bailing wire prblems befre yu start stuccing. STEP 2. MIX SAND AND CEMENT 14 (16 if yu have 50 kg. bags f cement) rund shvels f sifted sand with ½ bag f cement. Mix sand and cement dry befre adding water. Add water t the mixture until it reaches the cnsistency f mashed ptates. Rcks are bad! STEP 3. APPLY THE FIRST COAT OF STUCCO Beginning at the bttm f a wall, use a trwel r stucc hawk t put stucc n the wall, always wrking in an upward directin. Make sure that the finish is grved r rugh s the secnd cat f stucc has smething t hld n t. Cver the walls cmpletely, bttm t tp, but allw the chicken wire t shw verall n the first cat. Start n the shady side f the huse at ne crner and wrk arund the huse. By the time yu get arund the huse, the first cat shuld be dry enugh t begin the secnd. STEP 4. APPLY THE SECOND COAT OF STUCCO Apply a secnd cat when the first is cmpletely dry and has begun t change clr. If the first cat f stucc dried vernight, wet the first cat dwn befre yu begin the secnd cat. This will prevent the secnd cat frm drying befre yu can spread it prperly. The mix fr the secnd cat is just a little bit mre cement-rich (a cnsistency like frsting): abut 12 (14 if yu have 50 kg. bags f cement) rund shvels f sand t ½ bag f cement. The secnd cat will be smth, with n wire shwing. Finish with wd r metal trwels. Autmtive spnges, rubber glves, and high-vlume spray bttles are handy finishing tls.
