2 Effiient Computtion of Sensitivity Coeffiients of Node Voltges nd Line Currents in Unlned Rdil Eletril Distriution Networks Konstntin Christkou, Memer, IEEE, Jen-Yves Le Boude, Fellow, IEEE, Mrio Polone, Senior Memer, IEEE, Dn-Cristin Tomozei, Memer, IEEE Astrt The prolem of optiml ontrol of power distriution systems is eoming inresingly ompelling due to the progressive penetrtion of distriuted energy resoures in this speifi lyer of the eletril infrstruture Distriution systems re, indeed, experiening signifint hnges in terms of opertion philosophies tht re often sed on optiml ontrol strtegies relying on the omputtion of linerized dependenies etween ontrolled (eg voltges, frequeny in se of islnding opertion) nd ontrol vriles (eg power injetions, trnsformers tp positions) As the implementtion of these strtegies in rel-time ontrollers imposes stringent time onstrints, the derivtion of nlytil dependeny etween ontrolled nd ontrol vriles eomes non-trivil tsk to e solved With referene to optiml voltge nd power flow ontrols, this pper ims t providing n nlytil derivtion of node voltge nd line urrent flows s funtion of the nodl power injetions nd trnsformers tp-hngers positions Compred to other pprohes presented in the literture, the one proposed here is sed on the use of the [Y] ompound mtrix of generi multi-phse rdil unlned network In order to estimte the omputtionl enefits of the proposed pproh, the relevnt improvements re lso quntified versus trditionl methods The vlidtion of the proposed method is rried out y using oth IEEE 3 nd 34 node test feeders The pper finlly shows the use of the proposed method for the prolem of optiml voltge ontrol pplied to the IEEE 34 node test feeder Index Terms Voltge/urrent sensitivity oeffiients, unlned eletril distriution networks, power systems optiml opertion, smrt grids I INTRODUCTION O ptiml ontrols of power systems re often sed on the solution of liner prolems tht link ontrol vriles to ontrolled quntities y mens of sensitivity oeffiients Typil optimiztion prolems refer to sheduling of genertors, voltge ontrol, losses redution, et So fr, these tegories of prolems hve een ommonly investigted in the domin of high voltge trnsmission networks However, during the pst yers, the inresed penetrtion of distriuted energy resoures (DERs) in power distriution systems hs rised the importne of developing optiml ontrol strtegies speifilly pplied to the opertion of these networks (eg [], [], [3], [4], [5], [6]) Within this ontext, it is worth noting tht the solution of optiml prolems eomes of interest only Konstntin Christkou, Mrio Polone, Jen-Yves Le Boude nd Dn- Cristin Tomozei (emil: konstntinhristkou@epflh, mriopolone@epflh, re with the Éole Polytehnique Fédérle de Lusnne, CH-5 Lusnne, Switzerlnd if it meets the stringent time onstrints required y reltime ontrols nd imposed y the higher dynmis of these networks ompred to the trnsmission ones Typil exmples of optiml ontrols tht re not yet deployed in tive distriution networks (ADNs) re voltge nd power flow ontrols Usully this tegory of prolems hs een ddressed in the literture y mens of liner-pprohes pplied to the dependeny etween voltges nd power flows s funtion of the power injetions (eg [4], [5], [7], [8]) The typil pproh for the solution of this lss of ontrol prolems is the use of the sensitivity oeffiients through n updted Join mtrix derived from the lod flow prolem [9], [], [], [], [3] However, from the omputtionl point of view, the min disdvntge of suh tegory of methods is tht, for every hnge in the opertion onditions of the network, n updted Join mtrix needs to e uilt on the sis of the network stte nd needs, then, to e inverted This proedure involves non-trivil omputtion onstrints for the implementtion in rel-time entrlized or deentrlized ontrollers For this reson, the uthors of [4] hve proposed the diret omputtion of voltges nd network losses sensitivity oeffiients, sed on the Guss-Seidel formultion of the lod flow prolem, y mking use of the [Z] mtrix of lned network Also, in [7] it hs een proposed the use of the [Z] mtrix long with the onstnt-urrent model for lods nd genertors In [8] the sensitivity oeffiients re proposed to e lulted strting from the network rnh urrents The pproh presented in [5], [6], [7], [8], [9] elongs to lss of methods typilly derived from iruit theory nd is sed on the use of the so-lled djoint network In order to inrese the omputtionl effiieny of this tegory of pprohes, nd to extend it to the inherent multiphse unlned onfigurtion of distriution networks, the min ontriution of this pper is to provide strightforwrd nlytil derivtion of node voltges nd line urrents sensitivities s funtion of the power injetions nd trnsformers tp-hngers positions To this end, we propose to use the so-lled [Y] ompound mtrix, whih hs the dvntge of eing sprse Compred to [7] the pproh here proposed tkes into ount the whole dmittne mtrix of the network On the other hnd the nlytil derivtion of sensitivities in [7] ws sed on the pproximted representtion of the network
3 3 lines where lines shunt prmeters re negleted The method presented in [8] lwys requires se-se lod flow solution nd it relies on the ssumption tht ll genertors re PV nodes (ie with fixed voltge mgnitude) Also, it does not ount for the mutul oupling etween different phse ondutors The pproh tht ppers the more generl mong the ove listed is the one proposed in [4] However, this method depends on pseudo-lod flow pproh (ie it mkes use of Guss-Seidel itertive proess with fixed numer of itertions) whih influenes the ury of the omputed oeffiients Furthermore, ompred to [4] we hve een le to: generlize the prolem formultion for generi numer of slk usses; extend the omputtion of sensitivities to tp-hngers positions (ie hnges of slk usses referene voltges); provide the proof tht the nlytil omputtion of sensitivities dmits unique solution for the se of rdil networks nd tke into ount the inherent multiphse nd unlned nture of distriution networks The struture of the pper is the following: Setion II fouses on the prolem formultion y desriing, in detil, the nlytil proedure t the se of the proposed method It lso inludes proof of uniqueness of the solution of the liner system used to lulte the sensitivity oeffiients for the se of rdil networks The sme setion lso provides omputtionl ost nlysis of the proposed method versus trditionl pprohes Setion III vlidtes the proposed method using the IEEE 3 nd 34 node test feeders Setion IV shows n pplition exmple of sensitivity oeffiients relted to the optiml voltge ontrol in unlned distriution networks tking dvntge of the possiility of omputing them for ll the phses Setion V provides the finl remrks out possile pplitions of the proposed method II PROBLEM FORMULATION A Clssil Computtion of Sensitivity Coeffiients in Power Networks In this prgrph we mke referene to lned network omposed y K usses Trditionlly, there re three proposed wys to lulte the sensitivity oeffiients of our interest The first method onsists of estimting them y series of lod flow lultions eh performed for smll vrition of single ontrol vrile (ie nodl power injetions, P l, Q l ) [4]: Ēi Ēi = Ēi P l = Ēi Q l Pi,i l = Q i,i l = Pi,i l = Q i,i l = Īij Īij = Īij P l = Īij Q l Pi,i l = Q i,i l = Pi,i l = Q i,i l = It is importnt to oserve tht line shunt prmeters re non-negligile in se of networks hrterized y the presene of oxil les These types of omponents re typil in the ontext of urn distriution networks In the rest of the pper omplex numers re denoted with r ove (eg Ē) nd omplex onjugtes with r elow (eg Ē) () where Ēi is the diret sequene phse-to-ground voltge of node i nd Īij is the diret sequene urrent flow etween nodes i nd j (i, j { K}) The seond method uses the Newton Rphson formultion of the lod flow lultion to diretly infer the voltge sensitivity oeffiients s sumtries of the inverted Join mtrix (eg [9], [], [], [], [3]): J = P Ē Q Ē P θ Q θ () It is worth oserving tht suh method does not llow to ompute the sensitivities ginst the trnsformers tp-hngers positions Additionlly, s known, the sumtrix Q is Ē usully dopted to express voltge vritions s funtion of retive power injetions when the rtio of longitudinl line resistne versus retne is negligile It is worth noting tht suh n ssumption is no longer pplile to distriution systems tht require in ddition to tke into ount tive power injetions A third method is derived from iruit theory In this method Tellegen s theorem is pplied in power networks nd the omputtion of sensitivities relies on the onept of the so-lled djoint networks (eg [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]) This pproh requires se-se lod flow solution in order to uild speifi djoint network tht needs to e solved in order to infer the desired sensitivities B Anlytil Derivtion of Voltge nd Current Sensitivity Coeffiients This susetion ontins the min nlytil development of this pper relted to the derivtion of the voltge sensitivity oeffiients 3 ) Voltge Sensitivity Coeffiients: the nlysis strts with the voltge sensitivity oeffiients To this end, we derive mthemtil expressions tht link us voltges to us tive nd retive power injetions For this purpose, K-us 3- phse generi eletril network is onsidered The following nlysis trets eh phse of the network seprtely nd, thus, it n e pplied to unlned networks As known, the equtions tht link the voltge of eh phse of the usses to the orresponding injeted urrent re in totl M = 3K nd they re given y: [Ī ] = [Ȳ ] [Ē ] (3) where [Ī ] = [Ī, Ī, Ī, ĪK, ĪK, ĪK ] T, [Ē ] = [Ē, Ē, Ē, ĒK, ĒK, ĒK ] T We denoted y,, the three network phses The [Ȳ ] mtrix is formed y using the so-lled ompound dmittne mtrix (eg []) s 3 As shown in susetion II-B the urrent sensitivities n e strightforwrdly derived from the voltge ones
4 4 follows: ] [Ȳ = Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K Ȳ K In order to simplify the nottion, in wht follows we will ssume the following orrespondenes: [Ī ] = [Ī,, ĪM ] T, [Ē ] = [Ē,, ĒM ] T nd Ȳ M ] [Ȳ = Ȳ M Ȳ MM For the rest of the nlysis we will onsider the network s omposed y S slk usses nd N usses with P Q injetions, (ie {,, M} = S N, with S N = ) The P Q injetions re onsidered onstnt nd independent of the voltge In this respet, we re ssuming tht for eh seprte perturtion of nodl power injetions, the other lods/genertors do not hnge their power set points Therefore, the omputtion of the sensitivities inherently ounts for the whole response of the network in terms of vrition of oth tive nd retive power flows Suh onsequene llows to ompute the sensitivities in the lose viinity of the network stte The link etween power injetions nd us voltges reds: i S = Ē i Ȳ ij Ē j, i N (4) The derived system of equtions (4) holds for ll the phses of eh us of the network Sine the ojetive is to lulte the prtil derivtives of the voltge mgnitude over the tive nd retive power injeted in the other usses, we hve to onsider seprtely the slk us of the system As known, the ssumptions for the slk us equtions re to keep its voltge onstnt nd equl to the network rted vlue, y lso fixing its phse equl to zero Hene, for the three phses of the slk us, it holds tht: Ēi =, i S (5) At this point, y using eqution (4) s strting point one n derive losed-form mthemtil expressions to define nd quntify voltge sensitivity oeffiients with respet to tive nd retive power vritions in orrespondene of the N usses of the network To derive voltge sensitivity oeffiients, the prtil derivtives of the voltges with respet to the tive nd retive power P l nd Q l of us l N hve to e omputed The prtil derivtives with respet to tive power stisfy the following system of equtions: {i=l} = Ē i Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij Ēj (6) where it hs een tken into ount tht: i S = {P i jq i } = {i=l} (7) The system of equtions (6) is not liner over omplex numers, ut it is liner with respet to Ēi, Ē i, therefore it is liner over rel numers with respet to retngulr oordintes As we show next, it hs unique solution nd n therefore e used to ompute the prtil derivtives in retngulr oordintes to redue the omputtionl effort A similr system of equtions holds for the sensitivity oeffiients with respet to the injeted retive power Q l With the sme resoning, y tking into ount tht: we otin tht: j {i=l} = Ē i i S = {P i jq i } = j {i=l} (8) Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij Ēj (9) By oserving the ove liner systems of equtions (6) nd (9), we n see tht the mtrix tht needs to e inverted in order to solve the system is fixed independently of the power of the l-th us with respet to whih we wnt to ompute the prtil derivtives The only element tht hnges is the left hnd side of the equtions One Ēi, Ē i re otined, the prtil derivtives of the voltge mgnitude n e expressed s: Ēi = Ēi Re(Ē Ēi i ) () nd similr equtions hold for derivtives with respet to retive power injetions Theorem : The system of equtions (6), where l is fixed nd the unknowns re Ēi, i N, hs unique solution for every rdil eletril network The sme holds for the system of equtions (9), where the unknowns re Ēi, i N Proof: Sine the system is liner with respet to retngulr oordintes nd there re s mny unknowns s equtions, the theorem is equivlent to showing tht the orresponding homogeneous system of equtions hs only the trivil solution The homogeneous system n e written s: = i Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij j, i N () where i re the unknown omplex numers, defined for i N We wnt to show tht i = for ll i N Let us onsider two eletril networks with the sme topology, ie sme [Ȳ ] mtrix, where the voltges re given In the first network, the voltges re Ē i = Ēi, i S Ē i = Ēi i, i N nd in the seond network they re Ē Ē i = Ēi, i S i = Ēi i, i N () (3)
5 5 Let i e the onjugte of the sored/injeted power t the ith us S in the first network, nd i in the seond Apply eqution (4) to us i N in the first S network: i = Ē S i Ȳ ij Ē j ( = (Ē i i ) Ȳ ij Ē j ) Ȳ ij (Ēj j ) j S = Ē i Ȳ ij Ē j i Ȳ ij j i Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij j Similrly, for the seond network nd for ll usses i N : i = Ē S i Ȳ ij Ē j i Ȳ ij j i Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij j Sutrt the lst two equtions nd otin ( ) i S S i = i Ȳ ij Ē j Ē i Ȳ ij j By eqution (), it follows tht S i for ll i N Thus i = S the two networks hve the sme tive nd retive powers t ll non slk usses nd the sme voltges t ll slk usses As disussed in [] for rdil distriution networks suh n ssumption mens tht the lod flow prolem lwys hs unique solution Therefore, it follows tht the voltge profile of these networks must e extly the sme, ie Ē i i = Ē i i for ll i N nd thus i = for ll i N ) Current Sensitivity Coeffiients: From the previous nlysis, the sensitivity oeffiients linking the power injetions to the voltge vritions re known Thus, it is strightforwrd to express the rnh urrent sensitivities with respet to the sme power injetions Assuming to represent the lines tht ompose the network y mens of π models, the urrent flow Ī ij etween nodes i nd j n e expressed s funtion of the phse-to-ground voltges of the relevnt i, j nodes s follows: Ī ij = Ȳij(Ēi Ēj) (4) where Ȳij is the generi element of [Ȳ ] mtrix etween node i nd node j Sine the voltges n e expressed s funtion of the power injetions into the network usses, the prtil derivtives of the urrent with respet to the tive nd retive power injetions in the network n e expressed s: Īij = Ēi Ȳij( Ēj ) Īij Ēi = Ȳij( Ēj ) (5) Applying the sme resoning s erlier, the rnh urrent sensitivity oeffiients with respet to n tive power P l n e omputed using the following expressions: Īij = Īij Re(Ī Īij ij ) (6) Similr expressions n e derived for the urrent oeffiients with respet to the retive power in the usses s: Īij = Īij Re(Ī Īij ij ) (7) C Sensitivity Coeffiients with respet to tp positions of trnsformers This susetion is devoted to the derivtion of nlytil expressions for the voltge sensitivity oeffiients 4 with respet to tp positions of trnsformer We ssume tht trnsformers tp-hngers re loted in orrespondene of the slk usses of the network s for distriution networks these represent the onnetions to externl trnsmission or su-trnsmission networks As onsequene, the voltge sensitivities s funtion of the tp positions re equivlent to the voltge sensitivities s funtion of the slk referene voltge We ssume tht the trnsformers voltge vritions due to tp position hnges re smll enough so tht the prtil derivtives onsidered in the following nlysis re meningful Furthermore, we ssume tht the power injetions t the network usses re onstnt nd independent of the voltge With the sme resoning s in Se II-B, the nlysis strts in eqution (4) We write Ēl = Ēl e jθ l for ll usses l For us i N the prtil derivtives with respet to the voltge mgnitude Ēk of slk us k S re onsidered: Ē i Ȳ ik e jθ k = ik Ȳ ij Ē j Ē W i Ȳ ij Wjk, (8) where W ik := ( Ēi Ēk = Ēi Ēi Ēk j θ i Ēk ) Ē i, i N We hve tken into ount tht: Ȳ ij Ē j = Ēk Ȳike jθ k (9) nd j S i S = () Ēk The derived system of equtions (8) is liner with respet to ik W nd W ik, nd hs the sme ssoited mtrix s the system in (6) Sine the resulting homogeneous system of equtions is identil to the one in (), y Theorem it hs unique solution After resolution of (8), we find tht the sensitivity oeffiients with respet to the tp position of the trnsformer t us k re given y ( ) Ēi Wik Ēk = Ēi Re () 4 Note s shown in Se II-B one the voltge sensitivities re otined the ones of urrents n e omputed diretly Ē i
