6 Cover Image Title: Sea Shell By: Renata Kleinert I took this image at a Darrell Gulin workshop. I used window lighting with a 100 Canon macro lens and Canon 5D Mark 3 camera. I shot it at F20, ISO 100 and moved in to get a close shot. I did a little Photoshop on it - not much. Macros are fun. Page 6
7 Bokeh for PCC Subject of the Year! By Sonya Lang BOH-kay or BOH-ke the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens and has been defined as the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. What is it? Bokeh is a characteristic of a photograph, depending on what lens and aperture you use, will be the affect, or shape, that you get in your bokeh. Some is more pleasing to the eye than others (and of course is subjective). A soft out of focus background may not be as interesting to some as one that shows some of the light blobs that really show off the characteristics of bokeh. You as the photographer get to decide what kind of bokeh best adds interest to your final image or story you are looking to convey. What does that mean? The length and shape of your lens will give you different kinds of out of focus light. A more circular aperture will give you rounder softer blobs of light than one that is less round and more hexagonal shape. It is this characteristic, that creates bokeh. Bokeh is an important compositional choice and usually is not the subject but rather enhances the mood or dynamics of the image, although it can be the subject too, it s just not as common. How do I achieve it? 1. Use your lens with the largest aperture that you have 2. Try different lenses and look at the characteristic of the background and how it changes 3. Shoot wide open, but play with the aperture to see what happens to the light as you change it. 4. Get close to your subject 5. Focus on what you want sharp 6. Subject far from the background 7. Create your own bokeh (YouTube) and do a composite to create your vision 8. Get creative and have fun! Below are a few samples of bokeh. This is not representative of all types. It is intended to show a few different examples only. Page 7

10 July Program - Presentation by Bill Ray We are very excited to have Bill Ray as our presenter at the Pilchuck Camera Club at our July 12th meeting. Regular meeting starts at 7pm and Bill Ray will be presenting at 8:30-9:30. Parking can be tight so you may want to carpool. Baker Heights Social Hall located at 1401 Poplar, Everett, WA Here is a little bit about what Bill will be sharing with us. "Explore techniques that can differentiate your work from the herd, such as focus stacking to be tack sharp in depth, managing autofocus for birds in flight and Photoshop as a Lightroom plugin for astro-landscape." Bill Ray Images About the Artist billrayimages.zenfolio.com I first became passionate about photography doing black and white darkroom work as a teenager, trying to make my pictures look like those of Ansel Adams after taking mine from above his tripod holes.
