The very hot, humid and wet weather that sets the stage for hurricanes is around the corner. But to look on the bright side, it is a great time to work on our sewing projects in our air-conditioned homes. Last week there was an excellent article on the new cork fabric on My Grove. The Pompano Neighborhood Group had a hands-on program using cork to make wristlets which made me want to do more. The national conference is getting closer, July 12, 2018, in Las Vegas. There is a community service project in conjunction with the conference. The Las Vegas Chapter is making Christmas stockings for deployed soldiers that will be stuffed and shipped by the Blue Star Mothers. The pattern is available on the ASG website and through your Neighborhood Group Leader. There are also two contests the ASG Fabric Contest making a project with ASG fabric and the Anyone Can Win Contest making a garment using one of the thirteen Simplicity patterns. In this newsletter there is a Call For Nominations form as we have to start thinking about next year s slate of officers for the CAB. Please think about becoming a member of our CAB. We need people to run for the elected offices and volunteer for the appointed positions so that our chapter can continue to be the great sewing group that we have enjoyed for so many years. We are very fortunate to have a great CAB that works together very well. Faye 1

3 Hollywood Neighborhood Group News The Hollywood Chapter has been really busy the first quarter of In January we repeated our mug caddy class for those who were unable to make it last year. February had us making our adorable cat doorstops. March s project was a cute slap bracelet pincushion which I use all the time and can t imagine how I did without it. In April, we had a demonstration meeting on appliqué and a great group discussion. I am sure we all learned something new that day. Terry Hill and I also participated in an Adult Life Skills demonstration at the Alan Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University in March. We taught basic sewing skills such as threading a needle, sewing on buttons, etc. and had a great time. Also had green doughnuts as it was St. Patrick s day! Our members have been making clothes, quilts, wall hangings and baby items as you can see by the photos below taken at our events. Patty 3

4 Stuart Neighborhood Group News Creating for a Cause at the Cummings Library, Palm City, May 17th: The Stuart NG has been asked to explore new ideas and share the projects that we have sewn for community service. The purpose of the informal group is to bring stitching, knitting, crochet and other crafts together with ideas and skills to learn from each other, all with the goal of donating to the local and national communities. Creating for a Cause will meet the third Thursday of the month at 2:00 PM at the Cummings Library. The first one in May will be an idea meeting for all crafts. If you have project ideas that have worked for your group, please send Rusty or me a note so that we can include them in our discussion. Stuart NG group is very excited for this opportunity to get the word out about not only American Sewing Guild but also what the local libraries have to offer beyond the bookshelf. Maryann Pompano Beach Ann s eyeglass case demonstration was a hit at the April group meeting. 4

5 Neighborhood Group News ASG Palm Beach Machine Embroidery It is with deep regret that the May 2018 meeting of Machine Embroidery will be the last. I have enjoyed leading this group that I started three years ago. We have covered many embroidery topics. I will be adding machine embroidery programs to the NPB Neighborhood Group. Many thanks to those who have helped with programs: Laura, Colleen, Kathy, Carol, Barbara, Sharon, Gloriand Susan Reney. It would be wonderful if someone would step up to replace me so that the group could continue. I can no longer dedicate the time necessary to continue the group. Thank you all for your support. In March I discussed various appliqué scissors and various ways to do the appliqué one way using pressure sensitive fusible webbing or Stick and Fuse!! Designs included raw edge appliqué, shadow embroidery and reverse appliqué. Appliqué fabrics for the designs below include cotton, bonded knit, vinyl, mylar and HTV (heat transfer vinyl). In April Colleen and Gloria expanded the appliqué program with more detail on Reverse Appliqué and Mylar Appliqué North Palm Beach In March we held our Trash or Treasure Raffle. It is a fund raiser for our charity programs. In April, Lani wowed us with her program think out of the box or magazine inspired tee shirt program. I hope all of our members will look at their tee shirt pattern a little differently in the future. And sew on...jane 5

6 Boca Raton Daytime Neighborhood Group News At our last meeting in April we finalized our agenda for the remainder of this year. It includes two months of doing what we love... sewing. We are sewing receiving blankets in June and bibs & burp cloths in July. Why you say? In August and February a baby shower is held for the female veterans (I suppose fathers can also attend) at the VA Hospital on Blue Heron Blvd. in West Palm Beach. We have made and purchased donations for these showers for the past five or so years. Every time without fail we receive a letter thanking us for the donations. It s heartwarming! I know your Neighborhood groups also do Community Service work for various organizations. I think it s what we love about ASG along with the camaraderie we all share as sewing sisters. Anyone wishing to join us is welcome... or... make your own items and donate directly to them. In addition to making items we have given purchased items contributed by our members. Sometimes items are given to the mother for her own use, or even a young sibling to help ease the adjustment of a new brother or sister. We meet on the first Thursday of every month and would love to have you join us, especially with your Show and Tell. We love new ideas. Guests may attend two meetings before joining the Guild. Bring and share your sewing projects. Ask for help with problems you may be having. Please call first when attending at private homes. Occasionally, it s necessary for programs to change after the newsletter is printed. National Conference: Members are encouraged to stay at host hotel since we rely on room sales for the use of conference rooms. The Cocoa beach retreat was discussed in detail.
