2 Masterclasses at Janome Janome are pleased to introduce a program of Masterclasses at their fabulous purpose built training facility based at Stockport. The sewing school is opening its doors once again to give you the opportunity to work with experienced tutors and experts who use Janome machines for their work. The fabulous sewing school is located on the ground floor of the Janome Centre and is light and spacious. All sewing machines will be provided for your use on the day and a light buffet style lunch will be provided which is included in the course fee. Janome is ideally located seven miles south of Manchester and is approximately only two and a half hours by train from London. The location is within easy access of the main motorway network and there is ample onsite parking. All courses will commence at 10am prompt and finish at approximately 4pm Please inform the tutor if you have any special dietary requirements at the time of booking and read the list of further requirements you will need to bring on the day relevant to the course you will be attending. Most classes are booked direct with the tutor. This information can be found at the end of the brochure. Demand for places is always high and we do recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment. 3 Morag Coyle Morag now works as a freelance consultant and can still be seen as part of the Janome team at major sewing exhibitions in the UK. In the past Morag was Educational Manager at Janome UK running courses at their sewing school and has had extensive training in Japan, America and the UK. Overlocking techniques made easy Tuesday 1st May 2012 Course Fee: Whichever brand of overlocker you have, this workshop is designed to give you confidence operating these very versatile machines The course will take you step by step through threading, tensions and various stitches and techniques using fabrics as diverse as bridal veiling and sweat shirting. Each student will be provided with a 4 thread overlocker and all fabrics and threads used on the day.

4 Hatsonheads Hatsonheads is a wonderfully creative design led business artfully mastered by fashion and millinery designers Angela Coupe and Carol Robinson. Based at the Artisan Design Studio in Lincoln the duo design and hand tailor millinery in a range of spectacular styles.the studio is also the base for their inspirational IN2Fashion Sewing Courses for adults and children. An introduction into the wonderful craft of millinery Tuesday 15th May 2012 Course Fee: Make a Designer hat in a day. Millinery Designers from Hatsonheads will guide you through the process of creating your own special occasion free form Sinamay hat. Throughout the day you will learn basic millinery techniques using both hand and machine sewing. Please feel free to bring with you any special fabrics, beads, ribbons, lace you might like to incorporate into your hat. A kit will be supplied containing everything you need. 5 Myfanwy Hart Myfanwy has taught the embellisher, machine embroidery and other mixed media techniques for many years in various parts of the UK and also on mainland Europe. Her book, The Embellisher: Let s Get Started was the first on the subject to be published anywhere in the world, and her DVD s Inspired Embellishing have been highly acclaimed. Myfanwy has been involved in textiles for over 20 years and uses both machine embroidery and items from her hand-dyed range in her own work. Fun with the embellisher Tuesday 22nd May 2012 Course Fee: A one day workshop in which you will use the embellisher to play with some of Myfanwy s favourite techniques. You will build confidence on the machine and explore ideas which could be further developed after the course. An embellisher machine will be provided for each student to use on the day. Full guidance will be given throughout, making the day suitable for both beginners and those who are more advanced. Some materials will be included, items marked with a * will be available for purchase on the day. 6 Alison Smith Alison trained as a fashion and textile teacher and taught for many years in a large comprehensive school in Birmingham. Alison now runs one of the largest and most prestigious sewing schools in Europe. Alison s passion for her subject is evident in all that she teaches and her amazing knowledge of the subject no subject is ever unanswered!! Alison is a regular exhibitor at Sewing for Pleasure and has appeared on many TV programmes including Ladette to Lady. Alison is also the author of The Sewing Book published in 2009 and Sew Step by Step published Alison s new book The Dressmaking Book is due September Students are always stretched to produce their best work. Couture finish Thursday 7th June 2012 Course Fee: This is an all new workshop, to show you how to eliminate that home made look from your garments. You will discover why it is essential to interline some garments and which interlinings to choose. Discover how the correct choice of interlining and interfacing can change the appearance of a fabric. Discover tricks of the couture industry that relate to hems, bodices and more. 7 Naomi Avsec Naomi Avsec is a contemporary artist who paints whimsical and colourful artworks as well as creating embroidered fabric pieces on her sewing machine. Naomi has collaborated extensively with Paul Smith on a range of men s and women s shoes, ties and hankies. Last year saw her debuting in a one-woman show of paintings and textiles at Paul Smiths Space Gallery in Tokyo. There she demonstrated her expertise onto Paul Smith products for the customer. Naomi also supplies her work to Rebecca Hossack Gallery and Liberty. Doodling with thread (Make your own art postcard) Tuesday 19th June 2012 Course Fee: A crash course in freehand machine embroidery with the goal of creating an artwork to take home and treasure forever! Begin with finding your way around the machine with doodling and general play. Design and plan your very own textile postcard a short embroidered message to a loved one on one side (or phrase/saying) & an image or whatever you fancy on the other incorporating pieces of appliqued fabric. The base fabric for the postcards will be supplied and Naomi will also be bringing a large selection of fabric fragments to use in the applique. Please do bring a piece of your favourite fabric if you have one or indeed a piece of an old dress/shirt that has seen better days that you can t bear to throw out so that it can take on a new life in your artwork. (Strictly no stretchy, woolly or very thin materials as these can be difficult to applique first time round cotton is preferable or fabrics that have no stretch). Each student should bring 3 or more spools of their own good quality machine embroidery thread in their favourite colours. Naomi recommends Gutermann and Coats please ask the shop assistant for the machine embroidery threads.

Lingerie techniques Thursday 12th July 2012 Course Fee: Learn the skills involved in making exquisite lingerie. These skills can be for the overlocker or sewing machine and samples will be made using both types of machine. Learn how to work with bias cut fabric, appliqué lace, insert lace and apply elastics. A full set of samples will be made using a variety of fabrics, enabling you to make the most sumptuous lingerie imaginable. A kit will be supplied containing everything you need. 9 Sue Munday Sue has been working with computerised embroidery machines and their software for many years to explore new ways of extending her work. She works with a range of Janome machines and software to incorporate automatic patterns, free machine embroidery and her own digitized designs. As a textile artist and tutor Sue uses photography as a source of inspiration and combines her love of machine embroidery with mixed media, disperse dyes and the embellishing machine to create beautiful works of art. Digitize and create a project with Sue s specially prepared fabric Tuesday July Course Fee: A day of exploration using Janome Digitizer software to create a project. During the day you will be introduced to aspects of the software which will enthuse you with ideas for your own design work. Plus using inbuilt designs within the machine to embellish your project. Laptop loaded with Janome software Digitizer Pro MB, or MBX, plus dongle, and power lead. Notebook, pen, aspirins!! Your sewing kit should include fabric scissors etc. Machine embroidery thread, bobbin thread. A pack to create the project will be included in the course fee of 80. 11 Abi Manifold Abi Manifold is a designer-maker and experienced sewing tutor with a fun, friendly and supportive workshop style. Abi also runs her own business SewYou Handmade creating handmade accessories and gifts which are sold all over the world. Make a zipped, lined make-up pouch with appliqué detail Thursday 30th August 2012 Course Fee: This is a fun, hands-on course suitable for beginners and more experienced stitchers alike. We ll introduce you to the Janome sewing machine and show you how to use the satin stitch foot, zipper foot and appliqué foot to create a beautiful lined make-up pouch with appliqué detail. So many people say I d never be able to do that but trust us, you can! In the morning we ll make a practice piece in plain cottons so that you ll learn all the techniques. In the afternoon we consolidate the learning by doing it a second time using your choice of lovely, designer and vintage fabrics. You come away with written instructions, techniques and skills so you can carry on creating gorgeous pouches at home! Everything you need will be supplied, just bring an open mind and a smile!

12 Dionne Swift Embroidery Champion and Craft & Design Magazine GOLD Selected Maker: Dionne Swift studied Embroidery at Goldsmiths College, followed by a Masters at the University of Central England. She aims to translate her vision of the world into cloth by printing, dying and stitching at her Yorkshire based studio. Supported by a collection of teaching qualifications, Dionne has lectured at Higher Education level for over 20 years and continues to offer a selection of creative workshops both in the UK and abroad. Painterly embellishments Thursday 13th September 2012 Course Fee: Discover new ways to create surfaces and marks on fabric with an embellisher in combination with free machine embroidery. This workshop explores a new vocabulary of mark making while supporting you to create embellished & stitched cloth which can be used as a wall piece, part of a quilt/patchwork or any other project the choice is yours! You learn to draw and paint with your machines. Inspired by a collection of C20th painters you will analyse and translate their painterly qualities into fabrics. This process can be the foundation of future developments and is an excellent format for establishing new directions in your creative work. It s fast, fun and addictive. By the end of the day you will have discovered a collection of techniques to help you gain the most from an embellisher and you will be able to draw with your sewing machine. There will be a series of samples & workshop notes for you to continually refer to which will support your ongoing textile development, plus a larger finished piece to be admired by friends & family. All the relevant materials will be provided you just need to bring an open mind and be ready to play!

14 Sandra Coleridge Sandra Coleridge is a textile artist, who has exhibited widely and has undertaken many private commissions. She has many years of teaching experience, running courses at her home, embroiderers groups, guilds, private venues and residential colleges all over the country. She has specialised using the embellisher since its introduction. Much of Sandra s exhibition and teaching combines the embellisher and free machine embroidery techniques. FM725 embellisher creative course Thursday 25th October 2012 Course Fee: Join Sandra for a whole day s workshop exploring many techniques on the Janome FM725 embellisher and finishing the work with free machine embroidery. Each student will take home a finished artefact, a small bag, purse, specs case or other chosen small item. All materials for the course will be included in the cost of the course.
