1 ALL SEWN UP COURSES INFO Clothes Making & Fashion Tutor: Grace Carter-Allen updated 27/9/18 Monday evening from 6.45pm to 9.15pm Thursday evening from 6.45pm to 9.15pm Introduction and Course Content Beginners will learn how to use sewing and over-locking machines and to make a series of samples including a variety of seams, pockets, inserted zips and collars before starting on own projects. Intermediate and advanced students will be supported in the making of garments using commercial or own patterns, learning any relevant new skills as required, under the supervision and assistance of our qualified Fashion tutor. Sewing techniques you may learn or refresh include: Introduction and consolidation to the use of sewing and overlocking machines Use of commercial patterns or own designs Beginners will learn to: Insert a variety of zips Apply a range of pockets Make a range of collars and cuffs Apply a range of seams Use a variety of machine feet including zipper foot Learners with previous knowledge will be able to apply the above to garments old and new. All levels. This course is for adult learners (18+) with no knowledge of clothes making as well as for learners who have previous experience. Price list available in the classroom (11 sessions) Clothes Upcycle & Mend Tutor: Grace Carter-Allen Monday afternoon from 1.00pm to 3.30pm Introduction and Course Content : This class is a perfect chance to learn to make the most of your wardrobe, be it vintage or new clothes, favorite outfits that could do with a bit of TLC In this class you will bring new or old clothes that need mending, updating to the latest styles and those that require alterations for a perfect fit. You may also bring unfinished clothes making projects that need expert help to complete. Learners will do the sewing as directed by the tutor. Sewing techniques you may learn or refresh include: consolidation to the use of sewing and overlocking machines and hand sewing Shorten or lengthen skirts' or trousers' hems neatly Modify collars or sleeves Take in width or let out with the use of fabric panels Insert or replace zips, and much more This course is aimed at adult learners (18+) who are familiar with the use of a sewing machine and can hand sew.

Price list available in the classroom General Sewing Techniques Tutor: Grace Carter-Allen Friday Morning from 10am to 12:30pm Introduction and Course Content This is a class for anyone with an interest in general sewing, be it Clothes Making or basic Soft Furnishing. It is an opportunity to learn or refresh essential and advanced sewing techniques applicable to both fields whilst completing a variety of projects of your choice, such as simple garments or cushion covers with zips and piping. Sewing techniques covered in this class include: Introduction and consolidation to the use of sewing and overlocking machines Use of a variety of machine feet including zipper foot Beginners may learn to: Insert zips, pockets, collars and cuffs as well as piping Apply a variety of seams and stitches, by hand and with a machine Learners with previous knowledge will be able to apply the above to more complex projects, including shirts and jackets as well as small curtains and blinds. All levels. This course is for adult learners (18+) with no knowledge of sewing as well as for learners who have previous experience.

4 AUTUMN TERM 2018: from Friday 21 st September to Friday 7 th December 2018 You will need to supply all fabrics, haberdashery & your own sewing kit, list available at first session. Price list available in the classroom Embroidery Drop-In Blackwork & Cross Stitch Tutor: Frances Burden Thursday afternoon from 1.00pm to 3.30pm Introduction and Course Content : This course is designed to run both as a Drop-In as well as a full-term class. Come, relax and immerse yourself in the simplicity of the stitch and complexity of your chosen design to take your mind off everyday chores. Bring a friend or make new ones in this easy-going weekly Embroidery session where chatter and silence effortlessly intermingle. Blackwork and Cross Stitch are two of the best Embroidery stitch techniques to learn or refresh - though simple enough, they are endlessly adaptable and varied and can be used to create beautiful pieces of Textile Art. Touching at the history of Blackwork from its origins in Islamic and Moorish patterns, to the Tudor and Elizabethan styles incorporating flowers and plants, we shall then trace the history of Cross Stitch samplers as seen in the collection of the Victoria

5 and Albert Museum as well as contemporary artists who use hand stitching techniques in their work. After learning these two techniques, you will then design and stitch your own sampler using the following to produce your finished piece: Alphabet Adding colour to design Filler patterns Borders Design sampler Most materials, including worksheets, embroidery canvas needles and haberdashery items will be provided for the course but please bring along your own notebook, pens and pencils. This course is suitable for adult learners (18+) with basic hand stitch experience. Beginners are also welcome. AUTUMN TERM 2018: from Thursday 20 th September to Thursday 6 th December 2018 Most materials, including worksheets, embroidery canvas needles and haberdashery items will be provided for the course; there might be small fees for additional items. 15 each Drop-In session ( 10 concessions) or ( 100c) for the full term

6 Hat-Making: Introduction to Cut & Sew Millinery Tutor: Carla Rose Friday afternoon from 1.00pm to 3.30pm Introduction and Course Content Make trendy Baker Boy, Military-Style or Baseball Caps to complement your own fashion style in this inspiring sewing class. Students will learn the basics of Hat-Making pattern cutting and sewing machine construction techniques in order to make their own basic peaked cap, fitted to size, from flat pattern to finished piece. Students will learn to: Draw out millinery patterns to fit own head size Create two different styles of crown; Tip & Sideband & Section Crown, from paper patterns to 3D toiles Adapt patterns in order to personalise your design Design different shaped peaks A variety of seam finishes Use a range of Millinery construction & finishing techniques to take home beautiful hats Students will learn how to use fusible interfacing fabrics to give a hat structure and look at various peak inserts to achieve different effects/styles. Demonstrations will be given for all construction techniques and students will create a portfolio of their own samples for future reference, before moving on to make the finished piece. Technical tips and advice will be given in relation to how to handle different fabric weights and whether special equipment will need to be used. All students will be supported in the making of the hat, learning any relevant new skills as required, under the supervision and assistance of our qualified Millinery tutor. This course is aimed at adult (18+) learners who have previous experience of using a sewing machine or can use a machine with some confidence. Basic hand sewing capabilities useful but not essential.
