1 DUNDEE & EAST OF SCOTLAND BRANCH EMBROIDERERS' GUILD PROGRAMME INFORMATION 19 September am pm Welcome back - Exhibition Preparation 2pm - AGM Jan & Jean Videos Exhibition Preparation. 3 October 2015 Day School - Encaustic & Stitch - Nancy Poole Following the enormous success of her Workshop earlier this year, Nancy will again be showing how, after printing a landscape, flower or abstract in wax on special card, we will transfer it to fabric and use it as a background for stitching. Trained in Art, Fashion and Textiles at Hull College of Arts and Crafts. Working life was spent teaching adults with learning difficulties. On coming to Scotland she gained her City and Guilds in Creative Embroidery at Dundee College. Has worked in Adult Education and now teaches Encaustic Art and other crafts. 17 October am Workshop - Playing with Stitch - Helen Hill Playing with taking a stitch and experimenting with texture, size, colour and tension. 2pm Lecture ' Where is the Consolation?'- Alison King Trained at Edinburgh College of Art originally as a painter. She discovered a passion for textiles through many years of teaching. Has exhibited extensively and her work has been collected both in the UK and abroad and she has received several large scale public commissions in Scotland. In 2001 The National Museum of Scotland purchased one of her large triptych pieces for their collection of contemporary textiles. She is a former member of the 62 Group and a past chairman of both TSG and Edge- Scottish textile Artists. She has lived and worked in Scotland for many years.. 7 November 2015 Day School - Screen Printing and Stitching - Alison Templeton This class will introduce you to screen printing on fabric. A variety of methods of making a screen will be explained and tried. Your printed fabric can be embellished

2 with embroidery or if a multiple print, it could be used for patchwork. It is always a magical moment when you see your design in print. Alison graduated from Glasgow School of Art in Her diploma subject was Interior Design and Embroidery was her craft subject. She has been a keen member of the Guild for over 12 years, first in the Largs and District Branch and is now with the Renfrewshire Branch in Newton Mearns. She has lectured in interior design at the College of Building and Printing in Glasgow November am Workshop Fabric Postcards - Meg Woomble You will produce a postcard size landscape/seascape picture using fabric, bondaweb and hand stitching. Meg was a primary school teacher who loved introducing her pupils to new and messy art techniques. When she retired she attended a leisure art class at Angus College and joined the Angus Embroiderers' and Textile Artist where my love of textile art began. She then went on to do City and Guilds in Textiles, specialising in felt making and machine embroidery. She is a member of Carnoustie Art Society, Monifieth Art society, AETA and Dundee Embroiderers' Guild. 2pm Lecture - Nepalese Textiles - Karen Haggis Has had a lifelong interest in hand made textiles and a close relationship with Nepal since moving there for two years with her young family in the early 1990s. On returning to the UK she has diversified from her career as a primary schoolteacher and started up sewing classes for children. Also trained as an Adult Literacy Tutor. Now teaches around 40 children per in after school clubs and run Fabric Craft courses to groups of vulnerable women. Sources some of the materials for these groups in Nepal, in particular handmade wool felt shapes which are ideal for beginners. The focus on her most recent visits to Nepal has been to learn more about traditional textiles. This has taken her to some very remote parts of the country where foreigners seldom visit and has given her a fascinating insight into a way of life which has been largely unchanged by recent developments in the rest of the world. 19 December am Workshop - Christmas Decorations 2pm Show and Tell Christmas Decorations Nibbles

3 16 January am Workshop - Simple Straight Stitch - Jennifer Rochester Working with simple straight stitches a collection of textures and structures will be explored by altering the size, shape and spacing which are suitable for landscapes and gardens. A stitch notebook will be produced for future reference. A teaching certificate with special emphasis on creative arts from Goldsmith's College in London led to working with Primary children in London and Nottingham. Specialising in embroidery in the 80s in Dundee led to working in Adult Education in vocational and a non vocational capacity. Classes and workshops for the Embroiderers' Guild during the late80s till recent times throughout Scotland, alongside exhibiting with 'Edge' and other groups. 2pm Lecture The Magic of Fibres - Jenny MacKay Diploma of Art from Gray s School of Art, Aberdeen specialising in Embroidery and Weaving. Taught in secondary schools for many years. Involved in textile projects and exhibitions in Europe and America. 20 February am Workshop Needle Weaving - Lizbeth Winter Did Creative Embroidery City and Guilds and Patchwork Has been a member of the Guild for25 years and attend most meetings. Enjoys the morning workshops and also the Day Schools. 2pm Lecture Embroidery Sew Long - Eileen Rumble Trained as a needlework teacher. Began gold work through making and conserving church embroideries in 1960s. Developed a desire to maintain traditional skills with modern adaptions. Has continued conservation work on period costume and lace. Lacemaking is now her favourite medium of work. 5 March 2016 Day School Nuno Felt & Stitch Disolvable Fabrics - Jan Reid Nuno felting using dissolvable fabric, which makes an excellent base because it s lightweight. It provides a way f creating a patchwork to be used for felting. (More suitable for hand stitching. BA in Geography, City and Guilds at Dundee College. Member of Edge Textile Artists, Scotland and Scottish Embroidery Tutors. Founding member of Kalamkari Textile Art group.

4 19 March am Workshop Take a Letter - Bea Neilson Decorating letters with stitch which can be incorporated into a bigger piece of work. Branch member for 25 years. Retired Journalist - Editor and creator of the magazine Classic Stitches. 2pm Lecture The 'D' Word - Sheila Mortlock Studied Printed Textiles and Embroidery at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Dundee and after gaining PGTQ taught art in various schools, latterly for 16 years in two off site behavioural support units in Dundee. Until 2012 taught in the Design dept at Dundee FE college as a tutor for C &G Stitched Textile students as well as HNC/D Textile and Fashion students. Self- employed since 2012 as an independent tutor with students in two local venues one in Dundee and the other in a new art venue in Ladybank which has been both exciting and rewarding. Original member of Embryo which was formed in 1980 by graduate students of DoJCA and also served as chairman and secretary. Since inception of Edge in 2000 has been a member, served as chairman and exhibited with the group. Had several pieces of commissioned work in Scotland and has given illustrated talks on Edge and other aspects of textile art. Also a teaching member of SET and joined Textile Study Group in Background in printed textiles recently revived with different methods of producing print on fabric. Particularly interested in textural effects as a basis of surface for stitch. Has an enduring interest in architecture and the marks made by ancient stone masons. 16 April am Workshop Folded Fabric Flowers - Freda Wood Fabric Origami 2pm Lecture Keeping It Fresh - Liz Rowley Studied Stained Glass & Glass Design at Edinburgh College of Art Moray House and taught art for five years. Had studio in Borders and in Fife present. She makes architectural glass and restores stained glass windows. 8 May 2016 Day School Silk Paper Making - Val Hughes

5 In the morning learn how to create silk papers sing silk cocoon strippings, adding mulberry silks, angelina fibres, knitting wools etc. Continue in the afternoon with stitch and embellishment. Utilise different stitches by hand or on your sewing machine or use machine embroidery and perhaps a little bit of beading to decorate the papers. Val graduated with a first class honours degree in Art & Design, specialising in textiles. Since then she has regularly exhibited, run workshops and lectured throughout the UK. Val's work has appeared in numerous publications including 'Workbox', 'Australian Fibres', 'Echoes' and 'Handmade Living'. She is a well- known figure on the textile circuit and has demonstrated at ICHF major textile shows for over twelve years. Her first book, commissioned by Search Press, was published in It can be purchased on the day. 21 Mayl am Workshop Little Stitched House - Moira Dickson A small embroidered house which can be made into a lavender bag or small picture. Has a C&C in Embroidery and is a member of Edge - Textile Artists Scotland and Group Twelve - Textile Artists. Is also a member of Dundee and Fife Embroiderers Guild. Has taught hand embroidery for 10 years. 2pm Business Meeting Lecture Stumpwork of the 17th and 20th Centuries - Jane Currie Recently retired Home Economics teacher with speciality being fashion and textiles. Has taught craft to boys and girls aged Was Young Embroiderers Rep for Scotland, is a member of Stirling Embroiderer s Guild where she is chairman for the second time. Also East Area Rep for Scottish Region second term on Reg Committee. Has done C & G levels 1, 2 and 3 in Stumpwork also is a tutor for C & G. Is a volunteer at the Burrell where she shares her love of the embroideries with the visitors.
