1 2014 WMQFA Fall University Day: All About Wool Class & Teacher Description Three Hour Classes Nancee Ariagno Class Title: Applique Pin Cushion Make and take an adorable pumpkin pin cushion from a pattern adapted from a Flew the Coop original punch needle design. Kit Cost: $15.00 includes pattern, hand dyed wool, fusible web, chenille needle, Valdani thread, muslin lining and crushed walnut shells for stuffing. Cash, check or credit card accepted by instructor. Other kits available for purchase. Pair of small scissors 6 (No special skills required) Nancy Ariagno, award winning interior designer now designs wool applique and punch needle embroidery. She contributes original designs to the Wool Street Journal. Nancy is the resident artist at the WMQFA and her studio, The Cooperage, is located in the Farm House Gallery.

2 Jan Falk Class Title: Wet Felted Flower Pins Wet felting is magical. In this workshop you will learn how to layer colors of Merino wool roving, add embellishments, wet it, and form it into a beautiful flower- like creation. You will have enough time to make two pins. These can be air dried and further embellished any way you wish. They make a great pin for a hat, coat, or headband. Come play with color and texture. No knitting or crocheting involved. Kit Cost: $25.00 (Makes two pins) Includes wool roving, silk fiber, sil sari threads, Angelina fibers, olive oil soap, pin backs, beads for embellishing, beading needle & thread, written instructions. Instructor will provide felting tools and materials. Cash or check accepted by the instructor.. Additional flower kits will be available for purchase plus other felted items 12 (No special skills required) Old hand towel Jan is an Alverno College graduate, art teacher and artist. Dabbling in a variety of textile media for years, the tactile magic of wet felting has had her captive for the last seven years. She enjoys witnessing the aha moment when students experience the transformation of wool to felt. Jan teaches in many places, shows her work in Southeastern Wisconsin and has had pieces in juried exhibits. 2

3 Susan Forbes Class Title: Short Row Shawl In this class, we will create a short rowed shawl (also called partial rows) that was designed to show off the beauty of hand dyed yarns. The shawl is knit in garter stitch and shaped around the shoulders with short rows, which helps the piece stay in place when you wear it. The back of the shawl is shaped with a flattering curve. The hand dyed yarn is created by Susan. Kit Cost: $60.00 Includes 200 grams of hand dyed yarn, circular needles, pattern and stitch markers. Cash, check or credit card accepted by the instructor. Additional kits will be available for purchase. 8 For intermediate or advanced beginner knitters who are comfortable with knitting, increasing and decreasing Notepaper, small scissors Susan is a Wisconsin Fiber artist and independent yarn dyer. She vends all over the Midwest where she sells under her business name, Fairy Yarnmother. Susan s technique to create the yarns she uses in her art and in her patterns is called a yarn blank. A yarn blank is a 2- stranded, machine knit fabric that is dyed and then taken apart to use. It s a labor intensive process that results in a beautiful, unique yarn. 3

4 Joyce Krueger Class Title Beginning Rug Hooking Rug Hooking is a very old art/craft that started on the east coast before the country was formed. In this class you will learn the technique of rug hooking while making a 4 x 4 trivet. Bring along a small embroidery scissor. Everything else will be in the kit. Kit Cost: $16.00 Includes pattern, wool, hook, hoop and instructions. Cash or check accepted by instructor. A variety of wool pieces will be available for sale in addition to those provided in the kit. 12 (No special skills required) Small scissors. Joyce has been teaching rug hooking for 30 years. She has taught nationally and internationally and teaches classes in her home studio. Joyce has had many articles and rugs published in various rug hooking publications and books. 4

5 Sue Larsen Class Title: Learn to Knit In this class, we will learn to make a simple scarf. Skills learned include cast- on, knit, purl and bind off. Other skills will be demonstrated. Kit Cost: $25.00 Includes one skein of yarn, one set of knitting needles, How to Knit book, tapestry needle and pattern. Cash, check or credit card accepted by instructor. Additional yarns will be available for purchase. 8 (No special skills required) Paper and pen for notes, scissors. Sue has been teaching knitting and crochet classes at Knitch, the Delafield yarn store, for five years. She has knit for the past 15 years and loves to share her passion for the craft with others. 5

6 Kay Walters Class Title: Joy of Spinning Learn the basics of spinning on a drop spindle. Discussion will include information on sheep, washing fleece, carding, spindles, niddy- noddys, and setting the twist. Kit Cost: $10 for wool fiber; Optional drop spindle to take home for $16. Cash or check accepted by instructor. Additional wool, spinning wheel, skein winder, small niddy noddy available for purchase. 10 (No special skills required) If student has wool fiber or drop spindle already they may bring their own. They may also bring a spinning wheel if they have one. Teacher will have a niddy noddy for students to share. Kay has been a spinner for most of her adult life and raised sheep for 15 years. In 1981 she purchased a 1860 wool card and has been processing wool as the Cedarburg Woolen Mill ever since. Through the American Sheep Industry Association, Kay completed the Wool Classing Program. Other fiber skill sets include quilting, wearable art, weaving, and liturgical banners. 6
