2 Class: Basics of Continental Knitting Cost: $35 Two Sessions Available Dates/Time: Thursday morning, Jan. 19 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Thurday evening, March 2 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn the basics of continental knitting, a technique which involves holding your working yarn in the left hand as opposed to English-style in which you throw the yarn with the right hand. It is commonly considered to be a faster knitting technique. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Included: Yarn to practice this technique, Mother of Purl project bag Additional Info: Bring your own single-point or circular needles US size 9 or 10 (not included but available for purchase) Instructor: Aldona Shumway Class: Basic Mittens Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Wednesday evenings, Jan. 25 & Feb. 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm Skills Learned: Learn how to make a basic mitten on double-pointed needles in a worsted weight wool. You ll learn how to increase for a thumb gusset, how to make your thumb and a simple decrease to finish both thumb and the mitt. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off. You MUST have experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. Included: Double-pointed needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern, Mother of Purl project bag Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basics of Magic Loop Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Wednesday evening, Jan. 18 from 6:00-8:00 pm Skills Learned: Make an adorable snowman cup cozy using magic loop, a technique that uses one long needle to knit in the round instead of double-pointed needles. Magic loop can be used to make socks, sleeves and hats and is a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, increase, decrease and be familiar with knitting in the round. 3 Class: Basic Intarsia Knitting Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21 from 1:00-3:00 pm Skills Learned: Learn the basics of intarsia knitting from the designer of dozens of intarsia sweaters. You ll make a flat swatch using the intarsia technique of wrapping the yarn as you work in your design. When you finish the class you should be ready to tackle your own intarsia project. Brioche knitting creates a double layered fabric that is both warm and visually interesting. You will learn how to read a pattern and chart, stranded knitting, how to change colors, duplicate stitch, after-thought heel, knitting an i-cord and finishing a toe with the Kitchener stitch. Start now and you will have time to create heirloom stockings for the entire family. You ll knit 3 swatches made from your stash yarn and bring to class to learn the Kitchener, mattress and whip stitches and a three-needle bind-off. One topic will be covered in one 2-hour session. Topics include: Read Your Knitting - Being able to read your knitting is the first step in identifying problems. You ll learn how to differentiate between a knit and purl stitch, the right side from the wrong side of your knitting. recognize twisted or dropped stitches, increase and decrease problems and other common mistakes. Fixing Mistakes - Now that you can recognize your mistakes, let s learn how to fix them. You ll cover picking up dropped and missed stitches, changing a knit to a purl, plus how to use techniques such as tinking to help you correct and avoid mistakes. Cast-On and Bind-Off Techniques - There are a multitude of ways to cast-on and bind-off. What are the differences and when would you use which method? This discussion will show examples and have clear handouts. Picking Up Stitches - Learn the correct way to pick-up stitches both vertically and horizontally. You would use this for putting a button-band on a cardigan sweater or a collar on a pieced sweater. We will start the cowl in class and you will finish on your own. You will get a demonstration of the mattress stitch that you will use for sewing your cowl together. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off. 5 Class: Pure Joy Shawl Cost: $65 Dates/Time: Sunday afternoon, March 12 & 26 from 1:00-3:00 pm Skills Learned: Create a beautiful two-color crescent-shaped shawl in this class. With this shawl you will learn how to do a garter tab cast-on, short rows (wrap and turn) in garter stitch, increasing to create the crescent shape, eyelet rows and an elastic bind-off. Discussion of blocking will be included. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit and bind-off. Skills you ll learn include pinhole cast-on, increasing, decreasing attaching limbs, clever shaping and construction techniques and whimsy. Come see Zeke and his friends in the shop! Skills include knitting in the round, picking up stitches and short rows. If you ve never tried short rows, this is a great introduction as the results are quickly visible. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off and must be comfortable knitting/purling in the round on double-pointed needles. Mini-Blanket Cost: $75 Dates/Time: Sunday mornings, Jan. 22 & Feb. 5 from 9:30 am-12:30 pm Duration: 2 classes, each class is 3 hours Skills Learned: Learn to knit, block, and join squares using the Pop! Blanket pattern. In the first class, we will create one (or more) squares using the pinhole cast-on, knitting in the round, increasing, short rows and suspended bind-off. In the second class, we will continue knitting, answer questions and learn how to block and join squares to make the blanket. Participants should come to the second class with at least four squares completed in order to learn to join the finished squares with crochet. Note: finished blanket measures 25 x 33 but you may make it as large as you d like although this will require purchase of additional yarn. 6 Class: Design Your Own Cable Scarf Cost: $50 Dates/Time: Sunday mornings, March 19 & 26 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Skills Learned: In this class you will learn to design your own cable scarf by combining various cables into your own unique design. Using a lecture format, we will discuss finding resources for cable patterns, managing repeats, managing cable take-up and making swatches. You ll work at home to create your scarf design using graphs. The second class will focus on refining and troubleshooting your design, casting-on and starting your scarf. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, cable and familiarity with reading cable charts is helpful. This is NOT a class to learn to cable. 7 Class: Girls Night Out Knitting Series - Various Topics Cost: $10/week Date/Time: Second Friday of the Month - Feb. 10 & March 10 from 6:00-8:00 pm Duration: 1 two-hour talk each session, bring your own knitting Description: The Girls Night Out Knitting Series is a knitting group with a purpose. Come join a group who is interested in getting out, finding some time to knit while also learning some interesting knitting know-how, presented in a relaxed and fun way with lots of Q&A. Feb Learn how to choose the right colors/types of yarn for your pattern. Should you use a solid color or a varigated or a tonal or a gradient - what s the difference? March 10 - Learn how to choose the right fiber for your pattern. How to balance the need for structure vs. softness vs. weight vs. texture. Learn different strategies for over-use injury prevention and recovery. Whether you are new or experienced in yoga, modifications will be given to ensure a safe and rewarding class for everyone. Elizabeth has been certified as a yoga instructor for over 12 years and she specializes in injury prevention and recovery. She is in the process of opening her own yoga studio, Celebration Tree Yoga in Durham, Maine. Many were developed just by taking a stroll along the roads and byways of the remote and rugged Shetland Islands. This lecture will be a combination of a Shetland travelogue juxtaposed with swatches directly inspired by the landscape. Images of traditional textiles from the Shetland Museum and other local collections are also included.
