1 Swirl fingerless gloves by The idea for these started with my own fussiness I often find that with any gloves or mittens, my palms get hot and sweaty before anything else starts to even get warm enough to take them off, and this just gets annoying. It finally occurred to me that, as a knitter, I can solve this problem by making a pair of gloves with an open, lacy pattern on the palm to let a little air in. The swirl on the back was added just for fun, because that s the part everyone will actually see. These are the first gloves I ve designed, and it took ages to get the look in my head into something knittable, but they seem to work! Hope you like them too. What you need 1 100g skein of Malabrigo Sock in Solis (809) (the pattern uses about half of it) Set of four 2.75mm double-pointed needles Set of four 2.25mm double-pointed needles Two stitch markers Abbreviations k2tog knit 2sts together M1l make one stitch with a left slant (place the loop in between the stitch just worked and the next stitch onto the needle so you can knit into it from the back, twisting it to close the hole) M1r make one stitch with a right slant (place the loop in between the stitch just worked and the next stitch onto the needle so you can knit into it from the front, twisting it to close the hole) pm place marker skpo slip 1, K1, pass the slipped stitch over sts stitch(es) 1

2 Sizing note The gloves have been designed for medium to large hands. I ve included instructions in the pattern below on how to make a slightly smaller version, but haven t tested it. If you have any trouble, send me a message. Instructions are given as small/med(med/large). Left glove Cast on 52(56)sts onto three 2.25mm needles, making sure 17(19)sts are on needle 1. Join into the round. Work in K1, P1 rib for 2½in, or desired length. Change to 2.75mm needles. Knit for 9 rows (note you can knit more rows here if you want to extend the overall length). Row 10: Needle 1 K1, (yo, k2tog) to end. Needles 2/3 Knit. Row 11: Knit. Row 12: Needle 1 (yo, k2tog) to last st, K1. Needles 2/3 Knit. Row 13: Knit. * Row 14: Needle 1 As row 10. Needles 2/3 K7, place chart, K(5)7. Row 15: Knit. Row 16: Needle 1 As row 12. Needles 2/3 K1, pm, M1r, K1, M1l, pm, K5, place chart, K to end. This begins the thumb gusset shaping. Rows 17 and alternate rows: Knit. Row 18: Needle 1 As row 10. Needles 2/3 K1, slip m, M1r, K3, M1l, slip m, K5, place chart, K to end. Row 20: Needle 1 As row 12. Needles 2/3 K1, slip m, M1r, K5, M1l, slip m, K5, place chart, K to end. Continue as set, working the lace pattern on needle 1, increasing 2sts in the thumb gusset and placing the chart on even rows. When there are 19(21)sts in between the thumb gusset markers Row 33(35): Knit. Row 34(36): Needle 1 Work in lace pattern. Needles 2/3 K1, move 19(21)sts for the thumb onto waste yarn, cast on 3sts, K5, place chart, K to end. 2

3 Row 35(37): Needle 1 Knit. Needles 2/3 K1, skpo, K1, k2tog, K to end. Row 36(38): Work lace pattern over 21(23)sts, k2tog, K1, place chart, K to end. Rows 37(39) and alternate rows: Knit. Row 38(40): Work lace pattern over 21(23)sts, k2tog, place chart, K to end. 50(54)sts. Row 40(42): Work lace pattern over 21(23)sts, K1, place chart, K to end. Continue working through the rest of the chart as set in the previous row, knitting on alternate rows. You will have 53sts after finishing the chart. Row 45: Knit. Row 46: Work lace pattern over 21(23)sts, K to end. Row 47: Knit. Repeat these two rows 6 times, or length desired. Change back to 2.25mm needles. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Cast off knitwise. Thumb Place 19(21)sts onto three 2.75mm needles. Pick up 5sts along the cast on edge. 24(26)sts. Row 1: Place marker, K to the last 5sts, k2tog, K2, k2tog. Knit 6 rows, or length desired. Change to 2mm needles. Purl 1 row. Bind off loosely, knitwise. Right glove Work as instructed for the left glove to *. Row 14: Needle 1 As row 10. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K7. Row 15 and alt rows: Knit. Row 16: Needle 1 As row 12. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K5, pm, M1r, K1, M1l, pm, K1. Row 18: Needle 1 As row 10. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K5, slip m, M1r, K3, M1l, slip m, K1. Row 20: Needle 1 As row 12. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K5, slip m, M1r, K5, M1l, slip m, K1. Continue as set, working the lace pattern on needle 1, increasing 2sts in the thumb gusset and placing the chart on even rows. When there are 19(21)sts in between the thumb gusset markers Row 33(35): Knit. Row 34(36): Needle 1 Work in lace pattern. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K5, move 19(21)sts for the thumb onto waste yarn, cast on 3sts, K1. Row 35(37): Needle 1 Knit. Needles 2/3 K to last 6sts, skpo, K1, k2tog, K1. Row 36(38): Needle 1 Work in lace pattern. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, k2tog, K to end. Row 37(39): K to the last 4sts, move these sts to needle 1. Row 38(40): Needle 1 Work in lace pattern, starting with a K1. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, k2tog. 52(54)sts. Row 39(41) and alternate rows: Knit. Row 40(42): Needle 1 Work in lace pattern. Needles 2/3 K5(7), place chart, K1. 3

4 Continue working through the rest of the chart as set in the previous row, knitting on alternate rows. You will have 53sts after finishing the chart. Row 45: Knit. Row 46: Work lace pattern over 21(23)sts, K to end. Row 47: Knit. Repeat these two rows 6 times, or length desired. Change to 2.25mm needles. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Bind off loosely knitwise. Thumb Work as instructed for the left glove.
