1 Tertius Mittens by Jesse Wiebe These mittens are triply convertible - they can be worn as gloves with an extra-long cuff to tuck into sleeves, as gloves with a folded fingerless layer and a hidden pocket for treasures, or as full-on double-thickness superwarm mittens. The double cuffs are knit first separately, then joined together and the hand is knit from there. The thumb is a double thickness. The entire glove is knit in the round except for the pocket, which is attached to the cuff as you go, so there are no seams to finish (but as with any gloves, be prepared to weave in lots of ends). To convert the cuff to a mitten, it is folded up over the hand, the thumb is slipped through the thumb hole in the cuff, and the pocket is folded inside out over the fingers (think sandwich bag). When doing a long-tail cast on, cast on over two needles instead of one. This allows for a nice even, stretchy edge. When joining a new yarn for fingers or thumb, leave enough of a tail to sew up any holes that may occur. One way to help prevent holes when picking up stitches along a previous cast-on edge is to pick up twice as many stitches as required and K2tog them all. Techniques used: Knit, purl, K2tog, M1, long-tail cast on, backwards loop cast on, knit in the round, picking up sts, small diameter knitting in the round. Gauge: 26 sts/4" in stockinette Size: fits a ladies' L-M, at about 8" around palm. Can be sized up or down by adjusting gauge. Materials: Zealana Kauri fingering, 3 balls 3mm DPNs or size required to match gauge

2 Left mitten Inner cuff (the shorter one): With a long-tail cast on, cast on 44 sts. Join in rnd. Starting with 2 knit sts, work 2x2 rib until cuff measures 3 1/2". (K2, P2, M1, K2, P2) 5 times, K2, P2 (50 sts). Cut yarn and transfer to waste yarn (or leave on needles if you have an extra set). Mitten cuff (longer one with thumb-hole, which will fold up to form the mitten): Pocket: Using a long-tail cast on and an extra-long tail (enough for casting on 60 sts total plus about 3") cast on 28 sts. The pocket is worked flat. Row 1 (rs): K1, *p2, k2, repeat from * to end, p2, k1. Row 2 (ws): Sl1, *k2, p2, repeat from * to end, k2, p1. Row 3 (rs): Sl1, *p2, k2, repeat from * to end, p2, k1. Continue in 2x2 rib pattern as established (repeating rows 2&3), slipping the first stitch of each row, until pocket measures 2 1/2". After every row 2, twist your working yarn once around the tail yarn so that the tail gets carried smoothly up one side. Finish with a ws row (row 2). Your working yarn and your tail should be on the same side of the pocket. With the extra tail, cast on 32 more sts. Join for working in round, PM for beginning of rnd, work 2x2 rib as established for 1 rnd. Keep the original 28 sts all on one needle (this is your pocket needle). Using a safety pin and starting at the bottom of the flap (at your first cast on edge), pick up every slipped stitch along one side of the pocket flap. Repeat for the other side. Make sure you have the same number of stitches on both safety pins. You may need to pick up an extra st on one side. Fold up the flap so that it is on the inside of your circle of needles. *Transfer the last stitch from the first safety pin onto your left needle (the pocket needle) and purl it together with the first working stitch. Continue rib pattern to last stitch of pocket needle. Transfer the last stitch from the second safety pin onto your left needle and purl it together with the last working stitch. Continue rib pattern to end of round. Work rib pattern for 1 round. Repeat from * until all stitches from safety pins have been caught up. This forms your pocket. # (see right mitten cuff) Continue 2x2 rib until cuff measures 5 1/4" from second cast on, which is your new bottom edge. Thumb hole: Work 22 sts in rib, cast off 8, continue rib to end of round. Next rnd - work to cast off sts, cast on 3, PM (this is your thumb marker), cast on 5, continue rib to end of round. Continue rib as established until cuff measures 8" from 2nd cast on. P1, K2, (P2tog, K2, P2tog, K2, P2, K2) 4 times, P2tog, K2, P2tog, K2, P1 (50 sts).

3 Joining: Slip inner cuff inside mitten cuff, lining up beginnings of rounds. If you used waste yarn to hold the inner cuff, transfer sts back to a needle as you go. K2tog one mitten cuff st and one inner cuff st, inserting needle in mitten cuff st first. Do the same for every st around (50 sts) Hand: K 2 rnds. Thumb gusset: K to thumb marker. SM, M1, K1, M1, PM, K to end. *K 2 rnds. K to marker. SM, M1, K to next marker, M1, SM, K to end. Repeat from * 6 more times - you should now have 17 sts between markers. K to first thumb marker. Remove marker, slip next st to right ndl, transfer next 15 sts to waste yarn, transfer slipped st back to left ndl and knit it together with the next st. Remove marker, K to end (50 sts). K even until hand measures 4 1/4" from end of cuff. Fingers: Pinkie finger: K6, place next 37 sts on waste yarn, cast on 2, K last 7 sts (15 sts). K in rnd until finger measures 2 1/4" from 2-st cast on. (K2tog, K1) 5 times (10 sts). K 1 rnd. K2tog 5 times (5 sts). Transfer all 37 sts from waste yarn to ndls and K with new yarn. Pick up and K 3 sts along pinkie cast on (40 sts). K 2 rnds. Ring finger: Join new yarn, K5, transfer next 26 sts to waste yarn, cast on 3, K last 9 sts (17 sts). K until finger measures 2 3/4" from 3-stitch cast on. Middle finger: Transfer first 5 and last 6 sts to ndls. Join new yarn, K first 5, cast on 3, K last 6, pick up 3 sts along ring finger cast on (17 sts). K till finger measures 3". First finger: Transfer remaining 15 sts to ndls, join new yarn, and K. Pick up 2 sts along middle finger cast on (17 sts). K until finger measures 2 3/4".

4 Thumb: Inner thumb: Transfer 15 sts from waste yarn to needles. Join new yarn, KFB six times, K1, KFB seven times, K1. Pick up 4 sts in gap and KFB each one. With a tapestry needle, thread a piece of waste yarn through only the sts which were knit through the front of the loop. Make sure the waste yarn runs around the outside of the needles. Next rnd - as you come to them, slip each threaded st off ndl and K the non-threaded sts. You should now have 17 sts on your ndls and 19 on waste yarn around the outside of the thumb. K until thumb measures 2 1/4" from waste yarn. (K2tog, K1) five times, K2tog (11 sts). K 1 rnd. K2tog 5 times, K1 (6 sts). Outer thumb: Transfer sts from waste yarn around base of thumb to ndls. Join new yarn. Starting with same ndl as inner thumb, K15, KFB, K2, KFB (21 sts). K till thumb measures 2 3/8" from base. (K2tog, K1) around (14 sts). K 1 rnd. K2tog around (7 sts). When weaving in the ends, put a stitch through both layers at the tip of thumb to keep them in place. Right mitten Inner cuff: Follow directions for left inner cuff. Mitten cuff: Follow directions for left mitten cuff, up to #. Remove marker, wk 28 sts in rib, PM for new beginning of rnd. Wk rib until cuff measures 5 1/4". Thumb hole: Wk 26 sts. Cast off 8, wk rib to end of rnd. Wk rib to cast off sts. Cast on 4, PM (thumb marker), cast on 4, wk rib to end of rnd. Continue rib pattern until cuff measures 8". P1, K2, (P2tog, K2, P2tog, K2, P2, K2) 4 times, P2tog, K2, P2tog, K2, P1 (50 sts). Joining, hand, and thumb gusset: Wk same as for left glove. Fingers: Pinkie: K7, place next 37 sts on waste yarn, cast on 2, K6. (15 sts) K until finger measures 2 1/4" from 2-st cast on. (K2tog, K1) 5 times (10 sts). K 1 rnd. K2tog 5 times (5 sts). Transfer the 37 sts from waste yarn back to ndls & K with new yarn. Pick up and K 3 sts along pinkie cast on (40 sts). K 2 more rnds.

5 Ring finger: Join new yarn, K6, place next 26 sts on waste yarn, K last 8 sts. (17 sts) K until finger measures 2 3/4" from 3-stitch cast on. Middle finger: Transfer the first 6 and last 5 sts to ndls. Join new yarn, K first 6, cast on 3, K last 5, pick up 3 sts along ring finger cast on. (17 sts) K until finger measures 3". First finger: Transfer remaining 15 sts to ndls, join new yarn, & K. Pick up 2 sts along middle finger cast on. (17 sts) K until finger measures 2 3/4". Thumb: Wk same as for left glove. Finishing: Weave in ends and block lightly if desired. If your yarn is on the slippery side (Kauri is), you might want to stitch on a button and button loop (as pictured).
