5 A B C How To: Provisional cast on There are several ways to work a provisional cast on; this is one of the easiest. You will need waste yarn in a contrasting color (smooth yarn in the same or slightly lighter weight works best) and a crochet hook approximately the same size as your needles (for this project, a size F-5 (3.75mm) or G-6 (4mm) hook). With crochet hook and waste yarn, crochet a chain a bit longer than the number of stitches to cast on. For 24 stitches, chain spaces is long enough. Fasten off. With needles and project yarn, pick up (Photo A) and knit 1 stitch in each chain until the desired number of stitches is cast on (Photo B). Leave a few chains empty on each end to make it easier to undo the chain later. After the desired number of stitches have been cast on, knit as directed. When directed, pick up the live stitches from the provisional cast on (Photo C). Undo the end of the crocheted chain and carefully unravel it, exposing the live stitches already on your needle. (Photo D). Finish live stitches as pattern indicates. Be careful that the knot connecting the two yarns is below the needle, and that you have a tail at least 4 to 6 inches before your first cast-on stitch (this tail will need to be woven in to secure the first provisional cast-on stitch). Continue to cast on the required number of stitches using the working yarn. The contrasting yarn should be forming the ridge along the base of the stitch at the needle (Photo F). When directed, insert needle to pick up live stitches (Photo C). Once all stitches have been picked up, untie the knot connecting the waste yarn to the working yarn and unravel the waste yarn (Photo D). The yarn may not unravel with slight tugging; if that occurs simply unlace the waste yarn from the live stitches. Finish live stitches as pattern indicates. D Another way to work a provisional cast on is to use the long tail method, using both the working yarn and a contrasting color waste yarn. Tie a knot leaving at least a 4" tail (to be woven in later) connecting the waste yarn to your working yarn. Place the knot in the center V created by your thumb and first finger and drape the working yarn over your first finger and the waste yarn over your thumb.
