2 Mary s Summer bag These bags knit up very quickly. You won t believe how much they will stretch when filled. The small tote is great as a fun summer bag or everyday grocery bag; the larger version makes an elegant alternative to a standard laundry bag. NOTE: To create the small bag like ours, it will be tight, but you should be able to compete this project with the four skeins. DIRECTIONS Bag Bottom Small bag: With 2 strands and size 10½ needles, CO 20 sts. Large bag: With 2 strands of yarn and size 13 needles, CO 20 sts. Row 1: Knit to last st, M1. Repeat row 1 until there are 30 sts on needle. Knit next 5 rows in garter stitch. Row 2: Knit to last 2 sts, K2tog. Repeat row 2 until there are 20 sts on needle. Do not turn. Small bag: Change to a single strand of yarn. Large bag: Continue knitting double strand of yarn. Pick up 25 sts along rounded end, 20 sts along cast on edge, and 25 sts along rounded end. Place a marker. Join in the round and knit one round to marker. (90 sts) Bag Sides (both sizes) Round 1: *yo, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of round. Round 2: Knit. Round 3: Knit. Round 4: *yo, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of round. Round 5: Knit. Round 6: Knit. Round 7: Purl. Round 8: Knit. Round 9: Knit. Small bag: Repeat rounds 1-9 four more times. Large bag: Repeat rounds 1-9 four more times. Repeat rounds 1-5 once. Next round: Knit while decreasing 12 sts evenly around bag. (78 sts) Next round: Purl. (fold line) Small bag: Change to size 9 needles. Large bag:change to size 10½ needles. Both sizes: Knit 14 rows. Bag Front Band Purl 2 rows. Next row (holes for straps): Purl 33 sts, p2tog, yo twice, p2tog, continue purling 33 sts, p2tog, yo twice, p2tog, purl to marker. Purl 2 rows (make sure you knit the two stitches in the yo twice from previous row) Knit 1 row. Note: Knit 4 sts in the next st by working into the front and back of the stitch twice, picking up the yarn each time while the original st remains on the left needle. When done, slide the original st off. Ruffle Edging Round 1: *Knit 4 sts in next st (see note above), yo, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of round. Round 2-3: Purl. Bind off all sts purlwise. Cording for Strips You need two lengths of inches using one of the options below. Options: (A) Buy ready made at store. (B) I-cord: (make 2) (Used with Large bag) Knit i-cord strap as follows: With double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches. *Do not turn the work. Slide the cast-on stitches to the other end of the needle and knit the stitches carrying the yarn across the back. Repeat from * until strap measures ; bind off. (C) Simple twisted cord you make yourself (used with small bag): 2

3 Make 2 Cut an 18 ft length of yarn and fold in half. Hook the folded end over a small cabinet knob. Knot the other 2 ends together and slip a pen between the two strands of yarn next to the inside of the knot. (hook the yarn under the pen cap pocket clip). Step away from the knob so that the yarn is taut between the knob and the pen. Hold the yarn between your fingers on the inside next to pen as shown in picture. Use the pen as a propeller to twist the yarn (use one finger to spin pen in clockwise direction ). When the yarn is twisted fairly tight you are done twisting. (see Illustration A below) Now carefully fold the twisted yarn in half: First, find the center point of twisted yarn, hold it and use your fingers to spread the two halves apart. Carefully fold the twisted yarn in half by taking the end with the pen to the end on the knob (Be careful not to let the two halves touch until it s completely in half ). Then bring the two halves together. (see Illustration B) Let go of the folded end. They will twist together into a cord. Smooth out the cord by sliding your hand over the cord towards the folded end. Continue sliding until twists even out. *Measure out inches, fold completed cord in half and knot the two ends together to make a drawstring loop. Trim 1 ½ inches from knot. A B 3

4 Complete bag When you changed from 14 knit rows to 2 purl rows in the pattern a ridge was formed. Use that ridge as your fold mark and fold the band to right side of bag. Place the two knotted (loop)straps under the fold - each knot threaded through the strap holes in band (one knotted end on either side - see Illustration D below). Sew the flap down (while holding the straps in place ) by weaving a seam just above the start of the ruffle (Illustration E). Note: It s much easier to make the strap loops first and sewing the seam around them than trying to thread the straps through afterwards. E D F - Completed bag 4
