2 Andean Chullo Hat Andean knitting is known for its brightly-colored stranded designs. Geometric patterns as well as depictions of common things, like farm animals, are the main motifs seen in this region. Designs are often in a solid color over a shifting-color background. Knitting and textile creation are as ubiquitous in Andean society as coffee is to Americans. This cap is inspired by the Andean Chullo (pronounced tchoo-yo), which is a traditional garment knit by Andean men, women and children. Notes: This hat is knit from the earflaps-up, with applied I-cord and tassels to finish. You can make more than one hat from yarn requirements by rearranging the colors! Simply cross out and rename the colors as you d like but be sure to follow the charts accordingly. This is a choose your own adventure style design; simply plug in the charted design of your choice when the pattern calls for it to make your own unique hat. ML (Make Left-leaning stitch): PU the bar between st just worked and next st and place on LH needle as a regular stitch; knit through the back loop. MR (Make Right-leaning stitch): PU the bar between st just worked and next st and place on LH needle backwards (incorrect stitch mount). Knit through the front loop. Directions: Earflaps Pick a theme for the earflaps and make one of each Left and Right design. Be sure to wrap colors around each other, as in intarsia, where the solid color border and the pattern meet. CO sts and Purl one row. Begin working from chart; increases are included and should be knit in the color in which they appear. After last row (WS) break yarn with tails and place live sts on holder or spare needles. Make the second flap in the same manner, working from the opposite chart. Place on holder or spare needles. With color A and using the knitted CO, CO sts. Turn work. Pick up Left Earflap and hold it with RS facing. Holding the CO sts in your right hand, continue the row by knitting across earflap. Turn work and CO sts. Turn again, and, with RS facing, attach Right Earflap in same manner as right. Turn work and CO sts: 0 sts. Turn work, PM and join in the round. Knit one round with color A. Body Patterning Choose any Small Patterns you wish to knit in the four Small Pattern bands. Work as given in each chart s instructions. You can repeat one chart in all four sections, use two of the charts twice, or use different charts for all four sections that is up to you! Work two rounds of color A between each charted section; follow the diagram for placement. All patterns are worked in stranded St st. After the last -row Small Pattern has been completed, work two rounds in color A. Patterning Diagram Choose either Crown Pattern for this section. Choose any Small Pattern for these sections. 3 Crown Decreases Begin working from Crown Chart; repeat ten times around, working decreases as they appear. There should be ten sts left. Ktog around: ( sts remain). On next round: Ktog, K: ( sts remain). Switch to a contrasting color and work in -st I-cord for three inches. Cut yarn, leaving an tail. BO by passing the yarn through the live sts and pulling tight. I-cord border With spare DPN and a color of your choice, CO sts. Work in -st I-cord for three inches. Increase two stitches into the next round: sts. In the next round: the I-cord will be split into two applied I-cords that run along the edge of the hat. K the first two sts and slip the third. Place the next three sts on scrap yarn. Holding the hat with RS facing and starting at the CO point of an earflap, begin working Applied I-cord. Work until you have reached the point of the next earflap; leave live sts on spare dpn. PU the sts from the scrap yarn. Attach yarn and work applied I-cord around the other side of the hat until you are even with the other I-cord at the point of the next earflap. Place all six stitches on one needle and work one round in -st I-cord. On next rnd, dec. sts: sts. Continue in I-cord for three inches. Break yarn, leaving an tail. BO by passing the yarn through the live sts and pulling tight. To work Applied I-cord: *Knit two stitches and slip the third stitch knitwise. PU and knit one more stitch from the edge of the hat. You will now have stitches on your right needle. Use your left needle tip to pass the slipped stitch over the last knitted stitch. This will leave you with three stitches on your right needle. Slip these three stitches back onto the left needle tip, purlwise. Tug on the working yarn to tighten up the stitches. Repeat these steps from *. Tassels Make three yarn tassels using whatever colors you like: a solid, three different colors, or all of the colors combined. The tassels should be about - long; use about 0 strands of yarn per tassel. Finishing Attach the tassels to the end of each I-cord. Use the tail from the top knot of the tassel to tie and graft the tassel to the I-cords. Pass the I-cord tail through the tassel with a tapestry needle, and tie again around the center of the tassel. Trim tassels to even out the ends. Weave in ends; it is only necessary to weave in cast-on and bindoff ends and those that would be bothersome or show on the right side. The yarn ends inside the hat can be carefully knotted together and cut to about ½. Be sure not to pull on the ends while knotting so as not to disturb the pattern. Wash and block.
