3 Oakwood Poncho Notes: This poncho is knit in Stockinette stitch with the exception of two columns located on the front inside edges, which are knit in Brioche Stitch. A short row is added after every other RS Brioche Stitch row. The first stitch of every St st row is a slipstitch. Singlestranded fringe is added at the bottom edges. The color block section on the fronts is worked in intarsia. However, with the first color change row of each stair-step pattern, float working strands of yarn over 9 stitches on the WS. Use a separate MC color skein of yarn for the Brioche Stitch column. Brioche Bind Off Bind off the Brioche Sts in rib pattern, working the YO and knit stitches as same stitch. Slip 1 Stitch, Yarn Over (Sl1yo): With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise, then bring yarn over right needle. Brioche Stitch (brk): Knit YO and stitch together as one. Center Double Decrease (cdd): Slip 2 stitches knitwise. Knit the next stitch on the left needle and pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knitted stitch. 2 sts dec. Stockinette Stitch (St st, worked flat over any number of sts) Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for pattern. DIRECTIONS Body The poncho is worked from bottom of back to bottom of front. Charts are worked at the color blocking sections of the piece. The charts are followed from bottom to top, with RS rows (odd numbers) read from right to left, and WS rows (even numbers) read from left to right. Back With C1, loosely CO 178 (190, 196) sts. Work St st for 3. Then, break C1 and with MC work St st until entire piece measures 28 (30, 31), ending on a WS row. Separate Right and Left Front Sides Next Row (RS): K 76 (82, 85) sts; these are the Right Side front, do not cut yarn. Slip the next 26 sts to stitch holder 1 (these sts will be reserved for neck). Then slip the remaining 76 (82, 85) sts to stitch holder 2 (these sts will be the Left Front side). Right Front Return to the Right Side front sts, and with WS facing work Set Up Row. Set Up Row (WS): *Sl1yo, K1, repeat from * 7 more times, P1, pm, P to end of row. (17 sts for Brioche Column, 59 (65, 68) sts for St st.) Row 1 (RS): K to marker, SM, K1, * Sl1yo, brk, repeat from * 7 more times. Short Row 1: * Sl1yo, brk, repeat from * 7 more times, wrap next st and turn. Starting with RS, the neck will be worked as follows in St st: Row 1 (RS): K2tog, K11, cdd, K11, PU and K 1 st from Row 1 of Brioche st edge on Left Front side (25 sts). Row 2 (WS): P2tog, P23, PU and P 1 st from Row 2 of Brioche st edge on Right Front side. (25 sts). Row 3: K2tog, K10, cdd, K10, PU and K 1 st from Row 2 of Brioche st edge on Left Front side (23 sts). Row 4: P2tog, P21, PU and P 1 st from Row 3 of Brioche st edge on Right Front side. (23 sts). Bind Off Neck Stitches *K2tog, move resulting st to left needle; repeat from * to last stitch. PU 1 st from Row 3 of Brioche st edge on Left Front side and place st on left needle, K2tog. Pull yarn through to fasten off. Finishing Weave in ends, wet-block to diagram measurements. Add fringe after piece has been blocked and dried. Fringe With MC cut 330 (354, 366) 10 strands of yarn; one strand per fringe. Add Fringe to Back: Fold one strand of yarn in half. With RS facing, insert crochet hook through back of first st on backside, CO edge. Pull folded end of yarn strand through st, about half an inch (do not pull all the way through). With crochet hook, pull the ends of the strand through the folded loop and pull tight. Repeat this process for each st along backside, CO edge. Add Fringe to Front: Fold one strand of yarn in half. With RS facing, insert crochet hook through back of first st on Right Front side, along the BO edge. Pull folded end of yarn strand through st, about half an inch (do not pull all the way through). With crochet hook, pull the ends of the strand through the folded loop and pull tight. Repeat this process for each stitch along Right Front and Left Front side, BO edges.
