1 Beaded Smart Phone Sock By Carol Petersen This is the fourth of the 2011 Summer School classes offered at Yarn in Hutchinson KS. The object of the lesson is to learn about embellishments knitting with beads and embroidering on a finished piece. I used embroidery floss to make the flowers and dragonfly, but you can also use scraps of sock yarn. When you read the pattern, rows are slightly different. This is because I adapted a stitch designed to work in the round to my flat pattern. Since I only had an hour to teach beading and embroidery, I didn t want to tackle knitting in the round. If you would rather knit in the round and put beads on both sides, I have included the instructions at the end of the pattern. The yarn I used is from Two Windows Dye Co. Deb Waggoner is a gifted local fiber artist who creates hand-painted yarn in a variety of weights. This coral yarn with subtle variegation was a perfect canvas for embellishment. If you want a more sophisticated look, you can leave off the embroidery and continue the bead pattern on the back. Materials: Yarn: Knitty Bits 2 sock yarn by Two Windows Dye Co (430 yds/393 meters, 100 gr/3.53 oz) Needles: US Size 3 Other Materials: 46 to 92 size 6/0 seed beads (should be just one 17 gram tube), 1 dental floss threader (you can find them by the dental floss), 6 strand embroidery floss or sock yarn in coordinating colors, small tapestry needle, 1 button, 1 thick foam. Gauge: 26 sts x 28 rows = 4 x4 in stockinette Finished Measurements: 3.5 x6

2 Page 2 Threading beads: Thread the yarn through large eye of the dental floss threader, leaving a 4-6 tail. Thread the beads onto the threader and slide them onto the yarn. The beads should slide easily over the double strand of yarn. If one sticks, you can break it off with needle nose pliers. Thread all of the beads you need for the project on before casting on stitches. If you do not have enough beads, you will have to break your yarn to put on more. (We all know what that means more ends to weave in! No one wants that!!) Abbreviations: K: Knit P: Purl Kfb: Knit in front and back of stitch B: Slide bead next to previous stitch Ssk: Slip, slip, knit Sl1: Slip 1 st as if to purl with yarn in back of work Pattern Note: If you get lost in the pattern, here is a hint on how to read your work. You will generally start the (kfb, b, k1, ssk) sequence on the RS in the stitch before the bead 2 rows below. When on the wrong side, you will slip the stitch before the bead on the row

3 Page 3 below. Be careful, though, because there are some exceptions to the rule on rows Flat Knitting Instructions: Thread 46 beads on your yarn, if you are knitting beads on front side only. Thread 96 beads if knitting beads on front and back. Cast on 26 stitches. Knit 14 rows of 2x2 rib (with 4 stitch button hole knitted on Rows 7-8): Row 1: (RS) (K2, p2) until last 2 sts, k2. Row 2: (WS) (P2, k2) until last 2 sts, p2. Repeat Rows 1-2 two more times. Row 7: (K2, p2) 2 times, k2, p1, bind off 4 sts, (k2, p2) 2 times, k2. Row 8: (P2, k2) 2 times, p2, k1. Turn and cast on 4 sts using knitted cast on. Turn and k1, (p2, k2) 2 times, p2. Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times. Bead Pattern: Row 1: (RS) K1, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k9. Row 2: (WS) P10, sl1, p11, sl1, p3. Row 3: K2, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8. Row 4: P9, sl1, p11, sl1, p4. Row 5: K3, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k7. Row 6: P8, sl1, p11, sl1, p5. Row 7: K4, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k6. Row 8: P7, sl1, p11, sl1, p6. Row 9: K5, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1, ssk, k5. Row 10: P6, sl1, p11, sl1, p7. Repeat Rows Bottom: Knit 1 inch garter stitch. Back: Knit 46 rows stockinette stitch. If you prefer the bead pattern on the back, repeat instructions for bead pattern. Knit 14 rows 2x2 rib (as on front), omitting buttonhole on rows 7-8. Bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in ends. Finishing: If you are going to embroider, do it now, before you sew the side seams. Mattress stitch side seams. Sew button on inside of back ribbing, lined up with the buttonhole on the front. Cut a piece of 1 foam 2.5 x4.5. Cut this in half, so you have two pieces that are ½ thick. Place in sock, so phone can be cushioned in front and back.

5 Page 5 Circular Knitting Instructions: Thread 96 beads on yarn. Cast on 48 sts. Place marker at start of round. Cuff: Knit 2x2 rib (k2, p2) for 6 rounds. Round 7: (K2, p2) 2 times, k2, bind off 4 sts, p2, (k2, p2) to end. Round 8: (K2, p2) 2 times, k2. Turn and cast on 4 sts using knitted cast on. Turn, p2, (k2, p2) to end. Knit 2x2 rib for 6 more rounds (14 total). Bead Pattern: Round 1: *Ssk, k8, kfb, b, k1; repeat from * to end. Round 2: *Ssk, k8, kfb, sl1; repeat from * to end. Repeat Rounds more times (46 rounds total). Bottom: Knit ½ garter stitch. (Knit one round, purl one round). Seam the bottom with three needle bind off. Weave in ends. Finishing: You can still do embroidery if you wish. It will just be a little trickier in a tube. Sew button on inside of back ribbing, lined up with the buttonhole on the front. Cut a piece of 1 foam 2.5 x4.5. Cut this in half, so you have two pieces that are ½ thick. Place in sock, so phone can be cushioned in front and back.
