1 President s Message Hello Guild Members, Summer is slipping away, the air is turning cooler, kids are back in school and the sewing machines are warming up! Fall is my favorite time of the year. I feel energized and want to play with fabrics, design and sew! It also means Christmas is around the corner and that long list of gifts you were planning to make probably isn t going to happen. The list is now considerably shorter. But still there is time to accomplish something so get busy and sew. Find at least a few minutes every day to work on a project and soon you will have something completed. Retreat is soon. That is just what the Dr. ordered, some play time! I am going, the first time in years and I m so looking forward to it. Don t have a clue to what I will work on, I just have a few projects around here to pick from. Nominating committee is still hard at work. There are a few spaces left to fill on your guild board. This is a great way to see what happens behind the scenes. Let them know if you are interested or ask them about a position. Quilt show committee continues to work.. Here is another way to help out our guild. Volunteer to help during the show. We want a wonderful, beautiful quilt show and it takes all of us to make that happen. Okay! Are you ready for a Mystery!! It is starting NOW. Log on to our website - and look for the mystery notice on the front page. That should take you to the first clue. Gather your fabrics and check back in two weeks to start cutting and sewing. We will build our own flower garden to get us in the mood for our quilt show. 2 Quilting with Connie September 22, 2014 Workshop Bucky s Quilt With Connie Moyer 1-4 PM FABRIC *Courthouse Step Blocks: This is a very scrappy quilt intended to use up some of your smaller scraps. Gather as many different prints as you can and start cutting! Limit yourself to 5 fabrics per block. *Setting blocks 1 1/8 (1.125) to 1 1/4 (1.25) yards each of 2 accent prints. These prints need to read solid to accent the Courthouse steps bocks. *Binding 1/2 yard (0.5) *Extra Fabric you may not like the looks of a block once you start sewing so bring extra fabric just in case OTHER *Rotary cutting equipment small mat, 6 1/2 square, and rotary cutter you will only need this if you don t get enough fabric cut before class and to square up your blocks as needed. *Sewing machine in good working order with several bobbins wound (bring your manual just in case) and extra sewing machine needles *Extra light if you need it *Anything you may need to be comfortable and to enjoy your sewing day So you have time to sew in class, PRE-CUTTING is required for this workshop. Once you sign up for the class, pre-cutting instructions will be sent to you. September 2014 Page 2

3 October and November Meetings Annual EIHQ Guild October Pot Luck Dinner Salad and Desserts or Desserts and Salad October 27th 6 p.m. Plan now to attend the October meeting. We will have only one meeting that Monday at 6 pm. It is our annual time to get together, eat, and have some fun. We are doing things a bit different this year. We are having a dessert and salad supper. You realize that the word "desserts" is stressed spelled backward! That why we are starting it, first. I If your last name begins with the letters "A" through "L", you are asked to bring a dessert to share. If your last name begins with the letters "M" through "Z" you are asked to bring a salad to share. Everyone should bring their own table service and drinks. Entertainment: Basket Raffle and Election of the New Board Members When you enter, besides getting a ballot, you will be given ten tickets. During supper you may put these tickets in the boxes in front of items for sale that you wish to purchase. After supper, one ticket will be drawn out of each box, and that person will have the opportunity to buy that item. So don't forget to bring some spending money! We will continue in the same manner until all items are purchased. This is a "fun" way to raise money to defray cost in our upcoming budget. We look forward to seeing you there! 2014 EIHQ AREA QUILTERS GUILD WORKSHOP REGISTRATION Program Chair: Mary Jane Jacobson (319) mjwcj@mchsi.com Program Co-Chair: Jackie Mason (319) jacalynmason@yahoo.com Your Name Date Rec d Phone # Check # Address City State Zip TEACHER DATE DAY WORKSHOP COST TOTAL Connie Moyer/ September 22 Monday Bucky s Quilt courthouse step $30 Connie s Quilt Shop block; set together with a plain block *Payable at class time1. Our website address is: eihqguild.com This will bring you right to our home page. Look around and get familiar with what is there. This is where you want to go to keep up to date on activities and events going on within our guild. The site will always be a work in progress and is only as good as our members make it! Remember to or snail mail pictures and information from the activities you are participating in. Send your information to Maureen, Jackie or Deb and we will try to get them on the site where they belong. Your password is needed to get into the guild protected area with the newsletter and membership list. Did you know your password is on the back of your membership card? Check it out: eihqguild.com Like EIHQ Guild on FACEBOOK HAVE I GOT WONDERFUL IDEAS FOR YOU TO USE UP THOSE SCRAPS AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT!! And it's is not too early to start. This is a reminder to keep those place mats and lap robes coming in. Thanks for all the donations so far. Your kindness is appreciated. Visit the education table to see my newest ideas to using up those scraps and making pot holders. It was suggested that the bottom two sides should be rounded or angled so as to not catch in wheel-chair wheels. Stop by the education to see my newest ideas. These can be turned in to the education person anytime through the November 24th meeting. Karen Bronkhorst Education Coordinator September 2014 Page 4

5 Garden Fences and White Picket Fences Exciting Quilt Show Updates East Iowa Heritage Quilt Guild and the Machine Quilters Showcase have joined forces. EIHQ and MQS will be putting on the quilt show together next spring. There are date and place changes. Please re-mark your calendars. Themes Through the Garden Gate and Optical Illusion Where: Double Tree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex Cedar Rapids, Iowa When May 13-16, 2015 Classes begin May 11th OPEN to the PUBLIC Wednesday, May 13 ~ 3-7 PM Thursday & Friday, May 14 & 15 ~ 9 AM - 5 PM Saturday, May 16 ~ 9 AM - 3 PM The Quilt Show Committee will keep us up to date as new information comes in. Dear Guild Members, By the time you receive this newsletter, we will have approximately eight months until our "Through the Garden Gate" 2015 Quilt Show opens its doors to the public. I want to keep this timeline in front of everyone so each of you allow yourself enough time to (1) make your entries to hang in the show, (2) sell your raffle tickets, and (3) make something for the Boutique and/or Quilts for Sale. Please remember, our three areas of revenue for EIHQ's portion of the Quilt Show (and where we will pay our expenses from) will be: 1. Raffle Ticket Sales 2. Boutique Sales 3. Quilts for Sale There is one other matter I would like your assistance on at this time. We want to decorate different areas of the show carrying out the theme and we are in need of garden gates or pieces of white picket fence. If you happen to have something that would work, please see Diane Straw at the next guild meeting or call Thank you and happy quilting! Diane Straw Quilt Show Chairman September 2014 Page 5

6 Quilt Show 2015 Updates Just A Note.. As I write this, your new shirts are in production!! I m excited and pleased. Most of all, tho, I wish to thank all ofyour for supporting your Guild. Someone ask me at Guild last month Where/when do we wear our shirts? Well, hopefully you ll wear it to the grocery store, kid s ball game and anytime you leave your house! When someone asks where you got your really cool shirt, with great pride, you will offer to get one for them! I m taking orders!! (LOL) For SURE, we will order before our Quilt Show and will have bunches of them there! Remember my beautiful suitcase (s) we need to fill for the Boutique?? Our October Guild meeting is the first of several Super Self-less Sewing Day( s). With YOUR help, we will make LOTS of great stuff for the Bo-ti-Q! Perhaps on that day [OCTOBER 27, 2014], you will take advantage of the time to finish projects you started, share your crafty patterns with us that we will make to sell. I will be bringing my Accu Cutter and the dies for easy cutting of cool patterns for hot pads along with patterns for microwave bowls, aprons, table runners, wall hangings the list is endless. I m also bringing useful pieces of fabric (less than a yard) to make anything you can imagine. During the day, you can come and go, we will order lunch (same as for workshops) and then it ALL culminates with our evening potluck!! [details elsewhere in this letter or at Guild this month] We can wear our shirts!!! What great fun!! A great day to share, cultivate new friends and fill my suitcases!! SO we will have tables set up all over the room with ironing boards --- your list of supplies to bring?? (1) Yourself, your smile, your time, your talent; (2) Sewing machine with favorite tools to work; (3) Patterns to share; (4) Fabric and batting scraps to share (you will take these home with you at the end). Come and be with us. What a great day!! Thanx in advance for your support. PLEASE share your patterns and materials. 8 Art Quilt Challenge Art Quilt Challenges for 2015 Show - "Shelter" Theme There are two art quilt challenges which embody the definition of shelter to be included in our 2015 quilt show, a wall quilt (maximum perimeter size 144") with three layers and a small 3-D cloth structure of a shelter. shel ter [shel-ter] noun 1. something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, missiles, adverse conditions, etc.; refuge. 2. the protection or refuge afforded by such a thing: He took shelter in a nearby barn. 3. protection from blame, incrimination, etc. 4. a dwelling place or home considered as a refuge from the elements: Everyone's basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter. 5. a building serving as a temporary refuge or residence for homeless persons, abandoned animals, etc. Get inspired for three-dimensional fabric houses: Google search for "fabric houses" KAJdWjyATZ04HgCg&ved=0CBwQsAQ&biw=1069&bih=693 Fabric Houses at the International Quilt Show Corrine Smith currently has art work which feature shelters on exhibit at the Campbell Steele Gallery in Marion. All EIHQ Guild Members are encouraged to take this Challenge. GUILD 101 hummmmmmmmmm === Guild 101 does not seem to be of interest to anyone. How sad. It could be a chance to share stories, learn info --- but it needs your input. SO, I ll include my and phone one more month. THANX! Please let me help you tell the stories! You can contact me by (EIHQBoutique@aol.com) or phone ( ) or at our Guild Meeting. I m still looking for information about Small Groups, too! (lol) Elayne September 2014 Page 8
