PRESIDENT S CORNER What a fun night we had for our Annual Meeting! It was something different and I was hoping it would be fun. I believe we accomplished the task at hand. A huge thank you to Jan Felthous for helping us put the Murder Mystery on. Everyone on the Board gets a thank you from me for putting up with me and doing this skit. Sometimes I can get a crazy idea that just needs to be tried. I also want to thank everyone that gave door prizes, including Connie Moyer from Connie s Quilt Shop. Kathy Robbie, Debbie Wordehoff and Karen Bronkhorst worked very hard at lining up the food and desserts. Huge thanks go out to them. This was a wonderful ending to a wonderful year. I am looking forward to working with the new members of the board and I know we will come up with a few new and maybe never-tried ideas this next year. Please join us and get involved. 3 SHARING OUR SKILLS GUILD NEWS SOS Hope The Mission of Hope, 1700 B Ave NE, currently has a shelter home for men and will soon be opening a shelter home for women. They are currently collecting things for both shelter homes at the above address. In addition they also serve a midday meal; if any of you would like to volunteer to cook/serve, call , or go to missionofhopecr.org. We recently provided them with some quilts, and will be giving them as many as we can, to use in their new shelter home, and for the homeless they serve. Since the last meeting we also delivered quilts to HACAP (homeless/vets), the Linn County Department of Veteran Affairs, Grateful Grannies, Abbe Health and the Cedar Rapids Schools (refugee students). We will be hearing from representatives of 4 of the organizations to whom we supply quilts at the November meeting: HACAP, Abbe Health, Habitat for Humanity and Families Helping Families. Please join us for the "workshop" where we will be incorporating the President's challenge blocks you all have been making into quilt tops. We have plenty, so come one, come all! We will also be tying quilts during the same time, if you would prefer. SOS Wednesday is the 16th of November at the Knights of Columbus, 1620 E Ave NE, from 9:30 to about 3:30. We will be sewing and tying, as well as noshing on the best potluck ever! We will be meeting on December 21 as well. In October SOS received 8 finished quilts, 19 quilt tops ( some with the backing fabric) as well as other fabric and batting. Thanks ever so much! We are doing our best to get the finished quilts right out to those who need them. As always, we will be collecting your bits and bobs of leftover bindings, doll quilts, walker bags, and, at the November meeting, two canned goods. 4 Freedom Stitchers of Iowa! Freedom Stitchers Anybody besides me looking forward to the New Year?? This past year has been wonderous with all the positive support and response to your Guild Quilt of Valor group, the Freedom Stitchers of Iowa. With your help, we are starting our Quilt Number 226; We will have locally awarded more than 178 Veterans with a QOV; We will have had four Group Presentations and countless number of Private Presentations to our local Vets. My heart sings with a most sincere THANK YOU to all of you from all of us!! Looking forward to Next Year there will be Quilt Kits, Pillowcase Kits, Signature Blocks along with several other surprises. You might think it is too early to mention this BUT.. February 4, 2017 (a Saturday), is National Quilt of Valor Sew-In Day. Please mark your calendar and think about joining us or even just come by and see what Quilts of Valor is all about and what we do!! At this moment, a location is not commited to, but I m planning a neutral ground location where we will have 8 or more sewing machines set up [or you could bring your own], ironing boards, irons, cutting mats, quilt kits, jelly rolls and yard goods of quality Patriotic fabric at way below reasonable price for FSofI members, and still reasonable but a little more) for non-members. Plan to stop by (probably 10-4) and sew or visit or just ask questions and/or JOIN!. 5 January 2017 Guild Meeting In both the morning and evening meetings, we will have the regular business meeting, Show and Tell, and the Garage Sale. Special demos are also being planned! UPCOMING CLASSES 5

8 SNOW POLICY If the Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) cancels classes due to weather, then the will not meet. If the CRCSD runs on a 2-hour delay, will hold the workshop beginning at 1:00 pm and the evening meeting. If the CRCSD lets school out early, there will not be an evening REMINDER!!! If you haven t paid your dues yet, you can do so at the January guild meeting, on January 23 rd. Fat Quarter Lottery Bring one (or more) quilt-shop-quality fat quarter to the morning or evening meeting. For every fat quarter you bring, your name is included in a drawing for a chance to win a stack of fat quarters! January Fat Quarters: Hearts! Dues are still $30 for the entire year. That s just $2.50 per month! Membership includes informative meetings each month, early registration for trips and retreats, discounts from some advertisers, and digital newsletters delivered to your inbox*. *Membership is $40 at this time if you wish to receive a paper newsletter. As printing and postage costs continue to increase, we may have to increase the charge in the future for the paper newsletter. Upcoming: December, 2016: Just a reminder there is NO December meeting or newsletter. Take a break, relax, enjoy the holidays! January, 2017: Everyone will have a chance to redistribute the quilting wealth and good stuff better known as a Garage Sale. Tables can be reserved at the November meeting or by mail before January 10 th ; $15 per table. Even if you don't plan to participate in the Garage Sale, the January meetings will still provide plenty of quilty fun! Show & Tell, SOS and a plethora (yes, I said a PLETHORA!) of fascinating demonstrations! Stay tuned for more details. 8

9 MEETING PRESENTATIONS AND WORKSHOPS November 28, 2017 (Please bring a non-perishable food item to the November guild meeting) This month we are focusing on SOS and giving back. The following organizations have received quilts from SOS. Representatives from HACAP, ABBE Center, Habitat for Humanity, and Families Helping Families will be speaking to our guild. 9:00 am Meeting Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) is a diverse, community-focused nonprofit dedicated to the sustained improvement of human life in our communities. HACAP focuses on 5 initiatives, which provide solutions to locally identified issues. These five initiatives, Food & Nutrition, Veteran Support, Energy Conservation, Children, and Homelessness are comprised of over 20 programs focused on community betterment and individual self-sustainability. ABBE Center. Representatives from the Penn Center and Aging Service will be speaking to our guild about their programs as well as other groups, including Milestones Adult Daycare and Linn County Daycare. 9

10 6:30 pm Meeting Habitat for Humanity. At Habitat for Humanity, we build. We build because we believe that everyone, everywhere, should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. More than building homes, we build communities, we build hope and we build the opportunity for families to help themselves. Families Helping Families. FHF s mission is to meet the needs of youth who have been abused or neglected to allow them to have the same chance as their peers to be healthy and productive citizens.
