1 Pieces & Dear Members, Patches April 2015 Volume 30 Issue 7 President s Message As April has arrived, many of you will be thinking of packing up and heading to your northern homes. You all will be missed. While you are away, think about what you can do for your Southern Quilt Guild when you return. What would you like to get involved with to get to know more of us and to share your talents. Do you have something in mind to make for the boutique? We look forward to your return next fall. This past March meeting we were introduced to the nominees for First Vice President, Corresponding Secretary, Assistant Treasure and Director at Large. Read their bios in this news letter to get to know them better. They will be voted in and installed during the April meeting. For those of you who attended the National Quilt Day, you saw all the wonderful stations that were manned by members of this quilt. There were make and take booths, examples of various techniques, and demonstrations of all the steps of quilting. Thank You Kathleen Heslin for being the chair of this event. 4 Bios for candidates for election at April VAQG meeting. Crystal Allen First Vice President I recently retired after a long career in Market Research in hectic New York City. My husband and I (and our two kids Gracie the Golden Retriever and Sam the Lab) now live full-time here in Paradise. I love all outdoor activities, especially tennis, and I also now have the time to take quilting a little more seriously after having dabbled in it for a few years. OK, to be honest, I bought fabric and thought about quilting more than I actually got out the sewing machine and sewed! I m a new member of the VAQG and look forward to learning about the Guild and meeting other fabric-loving quilters. I ve been assured that many members will be helpful as I begin my learning curve as 1st Vice President constructive suggestions and offers of help are always welcome. Pat Michaels Assistant Treasurer My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was 11 or 12 and I continued on to sewing my wedding dress and the dresses of my four bridesmaids. In the 70 s we needed a new bed cover so my first quilt was made. After that, kids and work kept me away from much sewing until the 90 s, and most of my quilting was self taught. I worked for a Chicago architectural firm that designed restaurants as the office and accounting manager, in charge of all the company financials. I continued to sew when time was available. My husband and I retired and moved to Nokomis 12 years ago. I have been a member of the Venice Area Quilt Guild for 8 years and now a member of the Seam Rippers circle. The last few years my quilting interest turned to art quilts and presently I am enjoying the modern look of quilts. Anne Lee Corresponding Secretary Originally from Washington, D.C., I moved to Venice 16 years ago after raising 6 children and retiring. My work experience includes secretarial work in medical and legal Federal agencies, and as an administrator in a private law firm. Love to read historical fiction and mysteries, play the piano, knit and, of course, sew. 4

5 Jane Jeffrey Director at Large Originally, from Long Island, NY, my husband and I moved to Venice in I joined the Venice Area Quilt Guild as a beginner quilter the same year. As a member, I belong to the Gabbee Quilters Circle and have been their circle rep twice. I helped create the first National Quilt Day demonstration for the public, cochaired the 2008 Quilt Show, chaired the Door Prize committee for the last three quilt shows, worked on the Guild library and am now currently co-chair for the 2016 Show Boutique committee. The very best thing I have ever done just for myself was to learn how to quilt. And being a member of this Guild has been the icing on the cake! 2016 VAQG Show News Update from 2016 Show Chair Ginny Perkins: 1).Don't forget to get a jar and screening from the boutique ladies to work on over the summer. 2) We need a publicity person for the quilt show. Call me! 3) Consider making - either you or your circle - a basket for the basket raffle. 4) Susan Fender and her circle are Chairing the mini quilt auction. Please work on yours...we need many, many, many! 5) Bookmarks were passed out at the March members' meeting showing all the upcoming informal dates, where they will be held, and who will be conducting what sewing clinic. 6 VAQG Membership Meeting March 25, 2015 President Mary Johnson called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. A motion to accept the February Secretary s Report was made by Dottie Wynn and seconded by Andrea Shlasko, and approved by all members. The February Treasurer s Report was accepted as published in the newsletter. Ginny Perkins, chair of the Quilt Show, presented an update on the Show: (1) Committees have not picked up the folders for registration, hanging of quilts, security. (2) jars have been donated for the boutique to be filled with new or gently used items, beads, fabric, thread, ribbon, any useful odds or ends needed for sewing. If interested, please sign out a jar and be creative. See Ruth Fortsch for additional info. (3) donated mesh is available to make into totes of any size, for the beach, shopping, etc. (4) Pinky Stewart needs help for publicity on the show. She has everything organized and someone could do this on a part-time basis. (5) Ginny showed a box she purchased at Beall s Outlet, decorated with a Paris motif, that she is using to fill with all things Parisian. If any of the Circles are interested in doing a basket it would be appreciated. (6) June Campbell is asking for donations of articles, new or in good condition that would be suitable as door prizes. Bring in anything that you no longer need or use. The Guild would like to recognize members who do so much for the Guild and are not always recognized for all they do. Shout-Outs of Appreciation go to: Liz Bruckman has made more than 100 totes; Betty Brewer, a new member and registrar for classes who did a terrific job, Irene Piggott, for her many contributions, and Becky Adams nominated Dawn Moore, for her volunteer work and who is responsible for making the new card listing the informal workshop schedule. The card will help end the confusion of where the projects are held and the date. SCTI is giving the Guild free space for the informals which will be in A Building. Susan Fender, Chair of the Mini Quilt Silent Auction, needs mini quilts for the Quilt Show. Barbara Hargrave could not attend the meeting, but wanted to thank all those who helped and participated in the National Quilt Day Open House. Ginny Cole reported that the 12 Days of Christmas quilt is being finished. Everyone who sees it wants the pattern. The Seam Rippers have quilts kits that need to be finished, materials included. Some do not have batting but we will trade batting to replace if you use your own. Volunteers who took quilts to finish are Melody Livingston, Kate Veite, Martha Mullenex, and Liz Bruckman. There are lost items being held and unless claimed will go to the Free table: neck light and a bag of rulers. Mary Johnson asked the audience how many circles are making auction blocks. Although many hands were raised, she said we need more. She also asked if there were any volunteers to chair the Publicity Committee. Help will be provided and duties explained. Beth Christoppel kindly volunteered. Jane Copper-Short named the nominations for next year s officers who will be installed in May: 1st Vice President Chrystal Allan, Corresponding Secretary Anne Lee, Assistant Treasurer Pat Michaels, and Director at Large Jane Jeffrey. 6

7 Education Workshops Our final workshop of this season is Prismatic Flowers with Barbara Olson. As a Quilt Artist, Barbara has won national and international awards, been published in many books and magazines, and taught techniques for more than 18 years. See her website for examples of her creative spirit. This is a 2 day class, April 21 & 22, and there are a few spots remaining. Please send in your registration form with your $60 check quickly. If you are unable to take the class you have already registered for, please me, Leslie Lacktman, or Betty Brewer, at classes@vaqg.org. We want everyone to move from waiting list to class, and often the teacher will take a few more students. The class list and supply list is on the website. Bring a sweater in case the room is too chilly. Barbara Olsen will give her lecture and trunk show at the April 22 evening meeting. Thank you for supporting our workshops by attending the classes, showing your work at the meeting, and being Class Angel hostesses. It takes a village of Quilters to make this successful! If you renew at a meeting or event in person, I will give you your Membership Card with the passwords for the newsletter (the old one ends Sept 1; the new one begins Sept 1). Your card has both passwords on it, so please put it somewhere or write down the passwords so you ll be able to find the new one in September!!! Newsletters can still be mailed with a $10 subscription if you do not want to get yours on the internet. Membership Directories will be available in early September. If you want yours mailed, the cost will remain at $2 (probably the last year at this price due to postage increases!) 9

10 VAQG Quilt Show 2016 Mini Quilt Silent Auction To all VAQG members: Please create at least one or two mini quilts for the silent auction at our quilt show in Your quilt may be any size up to a perimeter of 80 inches (approximately). Mini quilts are fun to make and easy to quilt! And the proceeds from this silent auction are donated to our South County Food Bank. So it s fun and for a good cause. 11 Mystery I call this block Confetti. It isn t quite symmetrical but it has a very subtle secondary pattern no matter which way you arrange it. Piece the 20 blocks together 4 across and 5 down. Sew the Narrow Border vertical strips to the sides and then sew the horizontal strips to the top and bottom. You might need to cut one more strip so that the side strips are long enough. It is important to use these strips so that the piano key border fits exactly. Sew on the piano key borders from Step 4 and the cornerstones to finish the quilt.
