Pieces & Patches January 2016 Volume 31 Issue 5 Happy New Year to you all, President s Message Now that the holidays are over it is time to get those show quilts done and sign up to work at the quilt show in March. A volunteer is still needed to do the Venice Ave Merchants. I did it one year and it was a lot of fun. The merchants have been doing this for many years and I am sure there must be a list of those that put quilts in their windows. I put the donated quilts in a roller suitcase and took it to the merchants and let them pick the quilt they wanted to display. Then after the quilt show I took my suitcase and picked them up. Really Easy! Call Ginny Perkins at (941) and tell her you would love to do this job and just for fun ask one of your friends to help you. If you didn't get to go to the Christmas party, you missed a great evening. So many wonderful toys were donated to Toys for Tots. Make sure you look at page 10 in this newsletter to see the impressive pile of toys we collected. The auction items were plentiful and very lovely. I was lucky enough to win two of them. The table decorations were spectacular. What a great job the committee did. Thanks so much for all you did to make the tables look so festive. The food was delicious and a good time was had by all. Sue Singer called me up and said her circle the Sew Whatz would take Community Service. Thank you Sue and all the Sew Whatz for doing your part in making this guild great. I think we have all the committees filled for this year, but I am sure Ginny could put you to work during the quilt show. Remember, if you work during the show, you get in free. Just a reminder of the Jan. 5th board meeting for all those that will be attending. Happy quilting, Mary J.

January Guild Meeting There is a special show and tell at this meeting to showcase last year s mystery quilt. Please bring yours and show it off. It is always so interesting to see how fabric choice makes such a difference. 2

VAQG 2016 Quilt Show The holidays are over and it's time to focus on the March quilt show. We just have a couple of things for both guild members and quilt show committees. Please remember to volunteer to work the show. You are needed! Contact Lori Steinlauf or Jane Copper-short to add your name to the list. We have set up meetings for committee heads and anyone else that would like information on the show. Please mark your calendars for January 23rd 1 pm to 2:30 pm and another meeting on February 20th 10 a.m. to noon. Committee members will get a group about these dates. And, lastly, please continue to make things for the boutique, mini quilts, quilt blocks, collect and donate your quilt and sewing magazines and books, and raffle baskets can use your contributions. If you want to know who to contact for any of these groups, call or me. And, of course, your beautiful quilts are needed for the show! Today I'm working on the quilt show and have booked two dates at the Jacaranda Library for us to meet. Please mark your calendars: Saturday, January 23rd, 1 to 2:30 (may not last that long but the room was open to I went for it). Saturday, February 20th, 10 a.m. to noon (again, it's available and I have booked it) I hope these work for you. If not, send in someone for you or call me after the meeting and I'll fill you in. You do not need to me that you can't make it. So many of you are EXPERTS at this and know what you're doing so I don't feel the need to micromanage you. Just know my 'door is open' so-to-speak if you have questions or concerns. I appreciate your help. If you are not an expert, WE WILL LEARN TOGETHER! Venice Avenue Merchants Thank you to Kathleen Heslin for stepping up to the plate and chairing this important position. The visibility of our beautiful quilts along with a flyer in the windows of shops on Venice Ave helps to advertise our show. Thank you for everything you do. Ginny Perkins and Pat Bartleme Show Co-Chairs 4

Boutique The Boutique Committee is having a lesson in making the Four Season Placemat at thejanuary 13th Informal Workshop. The placemat is sewn with four different fabrics -just lay the placemat flat to display one fabric, them flip and fold to show another fabric. The placemat not only can be made using seasonal fabric but can also be made with any four fabrics such as flowers, animals, children's motifs, etc. To make the placemat, you will need 1 yd of four different fabrics, 4 pieces of fusible pellon 16"x20" and oval template shaped 14 1/2" x 19". The template and pellon will be provided by the committee along with some fabric that has been donated to the boutique. Please join us in making this unique and fun placemat at the SCTC building from 9am to 2pm. Jane Jeffrey and Crystal Allan Publicity Three requests, please.. 1) A call for members who create and show Art Quilts, for Men Involved in Quilting, and those who teach and judge on a national level if you are willing to be interviewed and photographed, please contact Beth Christoffel. We are compiling information for several local publications in anticipation of the 2016 Quilt Show (as well as to draw attention to our efforts) and need to add names, faces and examples to localize the articles. I am not one of those who knows about fellow members and the Guild s history. Please contact me to help fill in the blanks. The Washington Post and the New York Times ran articles in mid-december about the Baltimore Museum of Art s new and current textile exhibit focusing on these same topics so we are going to get publicity for our show too. 2) If you enjoy creating visual displays, Venice and Jacaranda libraries have allotted us the use of their locked display cabinets for the month of March. We could use a volunteer for each of the sites to compose, install and take apart these important parts of our community awareness projects. We have pictures from times past and items that can be utilized. A big thank you to Laurie Lazauski who is organizing, installing and taking care of the Englewood Library s display cabinets for us in January and February! 3) Also, we could use some help in reaching quilt shops you frequent with our Quilt Show flyers and bookmarks. We have many close by ones covered, but if you can help, please reach out to me at publicity@vaqg.org. 5

Mini Quilt Silent Auction Please don t forget to make a cute mini quilt for our 2016 Quilt Show. We still need many so that we will have 40 or 50 for each day of the show to benefit our South County Food Bank. Please submit your quilts at the January or February guild meeting so that they can be catalogued and numbered before the show. Thank you so much. Susan Fender and the Sew Happy Circle Please Remember to support our VAQG member owned local quilt shops. Reminder: Please do not wear perfumes or scented lotions for the comfort of our members with allergies or sensitivities. 6

Reminders about the VAQG show The January meeting is the deadline for the Quilt Show entries. You can find the form on the VAQG website on the Quilt Shjow Pages section or in the December newsletter. You can sell you quilt at the show. That form is also on the VAQG website. The Quilt Show is only as successful as the effort that the VAQG members put into it. It is also a major money maker for VAQG. So please remember to do your part to make it successful. Make something for the boutique Make a mini quilt for the auction Have your circle make blocks for the auction Donate items for one of the theme baskets or make your own Sign up to volunteer at the event Sell ads for the booklet Together we can make this a successful event and expose our guests to the wonderful world of quilting. Quilters Classifieds - Selling or looking for a machine? Do you like to earn money making T-Shirt quilts? Do you repair old quilts for a fee? You can advertise for free on our website! Just send an towebmaster@vaqg.org to learn more. 7

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016!! I resolve; To sign up for Guild classes and learn something new, gain more confidence in techniques, and have a day of fun with friends! Now that s a resolution we can all keep! A lot has happened with our classes for this year. Melinda Bula will add a third day for her sold out classes. Members who have signed up and are on the waitlist will be contacted first to take the third class, Thursday, January 28. The class offered will be Renegade Thread Play. Machine Quilting Using a Walking Foot with Janine Ward Class date: February 24th, 9-3pm This class is for you if you are not yet confident with free-motion quilting but want something more than just stitch-in-the-ditch. We will discuss preparing your quilt top, sandwich, workspace and planning your quilting. Then you ll experiment with a variety of quilting threads and cover easy designs and simple techniques to give you the confidence to finish your own quilt tops. (All Levels- However, you must know your machine.) Fiber artist Janine Ward learned to sew while growing up in northern New York. Her developing artistic passion led her to Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota Florida. Upon graduation, she pursued a career as a graphic artist in the Washington D.C. area while beginning to create exciting directions for her art. In 1998 Janine returned to Sarasota to provide herself with a new environment to nurture her fiber art. Janine believes people feel connected to fabric more so than to paint. For her, it is a natural choice of medium. From the day we are born, we have a relationship with fabric whether or not we are even aware of it. Fabrics add color, texture and warmth to our daily life and carry with them a sense of history and place that paint cannot duplicate. More and more, Janine enjoys the artistic quality of stitch to create beautiful texture in her quilting. At the beginning of 2015, she incorporated long-arm quilting to her repertoire, enabling her to help other quilters finish their quilt tops. She has studied with national teachers such as Jane Sassaman, Paula Nadelstern, Esterita Austin, Ricky Tims, Ruth McDowell, Libby Lehman, Laura Cater-Woods, Laura Wasilowski, Carol Taylor, Angela Walters and many others. Betty New cancelled due to family illness. Those already on the registration list need not re-register. There are still a few spaces for new sign ups. Giggling over Pig Puns?? Grab a friend and take accomplished quilt designer June Varner s Pigs on Parade and design your own wall hanging in March. With laughter! HURRAH!!! Christine Ravish, teacher of our April 26/27 class, is published in the current issue of Modern Patchwork magazine. AGAIN!! Don t miss her. Sign up to work with her in her creative class! See you in the New Year, Leslie Lacktman 8

VAQG 2015 Holiday Party Donations for Toys For Tots FYI- A total of $1640 was donated to the South County Food Pantry from the Teacup Auction. There were 136 members and guests present at the dinner. Sunshine Card Requests Anne Lee is the VAQGj Sunshine Lady.. If you know of someone that needs a card from the guild, please notify Anne at annelee6@ Verizon.net. 9

Pet Bed Project- from Dawn Moore and Jane Sanks- The animal shelters love the beds we make for the animals awaiting adoption. We thank you for your quilting scraps and unused home decorator fabric. Unfortunately, there is way too much unusable material being donated. We must limit the scraps to cotton quilting fabric and quilt batting only. Large pieces of decorating fabric and clean bed sheets and pillowcases are needed for the covers and linings. Workshop dates for 2016 are: January 15, February 12, March 11, April 8, May 13 and June 10. We would love to have anyone join us. You can sew, sort or stuff. All of these dates are subject to change based on the needs of the American Red Cross (ARC). We are so lucky to use their facility for our workshop, but also that they allow storage for bags of scraps. Our workshop meetings are on Fridays from 1 to 3 PM at the American Red Cross facility at the north end of Cantu Court in Sarasota. The ARC is located on Cantu Court which is north of the intersection of Cattleman and Bee Ridge Roads. If you are unfamiliar with the area, you may call us for help you with directions. Thanks for your contributions. You can give bags of scraps to Sue Balazs or Dawn Moore at any guild meeting. To learn more contact Jane Sanks (home) or (cell). Deadline for the February newsletter is Friday, Jan
