Pieces & Patches 2019 Volume 34 Issue 4 In this issue President s Message 1-2 November Meeting Minutes 2-3 Inforrmal Wkshp 3 Treasurer s Report 4-5 Committee Descriptions 6-8 Community Service 9-10 Advertising and Tidbits 11 Newsletter deadline 12 From the desk of the President. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! WOW! The Holiday Dinner was wonderful. From the great food, to the pile of Toys for Tots, to the fun hand- made gifts for the auction, we had a very special evening. We raised $ for the food pantry! Great job ladies. That will feed a lot of families. Thank you to Becky Adam, Sue Hamilton, Marilyn Herman, Sharon Bottini, Heather Cowan, and the entire committee. Everyone who attended had a great time. Hopefully, you got to Blalock Park to see the tree that the guild decorated. Jane Jeffrey and Crystal Allen were our leaders through this new endeavor and it was very successful. I know we will add this event to our annual agenda. The lighting ceremony was spectacular. Our quilt Challenge is due by 6:15 at our January 23rd meeting. So hurry to finish them up. North Star Gals Circle is heading up this fun challenge. I have a special request. Time is flying by, and we are still in need of several committee chairs for our 2020 show. Please look on-line at our past newsletters. Open the Quilt Show edition December On page 5 there is a complete list of committees. Look them over. The guild must have all of these positions filled. It really is not a matter of if you want to help. It is a matter of what you want to do. You know ask not what your guild can do for you If you have questions about what is involved in a position, particular position, I am certain the person listed as the last chair would be happy to answer your questions. Just dial the phone and make a new friend. You will notice that some positions are a circle, making the task much easier and a lot of fun

. PLEASE talk to your circles, and your quilting friends. Let me know what committee you want to chair or co-chair or support. We have a wonderful year planned, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at meetings, at classes, on the bus, at the Escape, and at in-formals. 6 . What Can I Do For My Guild? We have been asking for volunteers to help with our quilt show, and other guild activities. It is becoming clear to me that a lot of our members are newer, and therefore don t understand what is involved, and what would be expected of them. So, in the space below, I am going to attempt to get a lot of this info out to all of you. First, let me say that almost all of the committees needed for 2019 have been filled. The committees still in need of help are primarily those for the 2020 Quilt Show. The name in parentheses after the job description, is the person who held the position for our last show. If you want more info about what is involved, please call them. The committees in red and prefaced by an asterisk are filled Nominating committee: 3-4 members who are willing to talk to other members to find candidates for 4 board positions that are vacated June 1 st The positions are 1 st Vice President, Corresponding Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, and a Director at Large. The nominating committee presents the slate of officers to the board at the March board meeting, then to the membership at the March membership meeting. The slate is voted on at the April business meeting, and the approved new board members are inducted at the May Pot Luck dinner. ( Barbara Shapiro) 2020 Show: Show Chair, and co-chair (s): This position needs a leader, a people person, time manager. There is a lot of delegating, and possible trouble shooting involved. This position also provides the best opportunities to meet new people, and make new friends. Remember that most of your committee chairs have been to this rodeo before. This position is mostly support, and sometimes an executive decision making position. (Val Wurster, Gabbee Quilters) Admissions: Lead a group of volunteers to sit at the front door of the show, taking ticket money, handing out programs, etc. (Joan Cusack Lady Bugs) Appraiser: Contact a certified Quilt Appraiser and procure her services for the duration of the show. We do not charge her for her space, nor do we pay her for her mileage, meals, lodging etc. Books/ magazines: Collect used books and magazine donations from our members throughout the year. There is room in our storage locker to keep them until the show. Bundle and price them, and staff the booth throughout the quilt show. (Patti Heald) Boutique: This is one of the largest most labor intensive jobs for the show. Remember that many hands make light work. The job includes: collecting hand made items from all members, setting up informals with patterns, kits etc, for members to complete, researching new ideas for saleable items. (other quilt shows, etc) 6

All items will need to be priced and stored in the large bins in our storage locker. This can be done with trips to the locker each month. A large portion of our earnings come from the boutique. It is a very important job, and therefore, I recommend that several of you work together. (Pinky Stewart, Kathy Casey, and Linda Creed) *Challenge Quilt Display: North Star Gals *Circle Block Auction: Scrapbaggers Donation Chair: This person or persons contact various vendors, stores, manufacturers for donations we can use for door prizes and/or our raffle baskets. (Jean Campbell) Enhancements: Let the membership know that we need various items to set around to make the show look more homelike, planters, teddy bears, quilt racks. Collect these items the day of set up, place them after the quilts are up, collect them after the show and be sure they get returned to their owners. (Ann Dieter) Gift Basket auction: Collect gifts and items from all circles. Add donated items to them, make up the baskets. Throughout the show, sell tickets, handle drawings at the close of the show and get the baskets to the winners. (Karen Borgeson) Hanging: Use the registration forms to get the sizes of the quilts, or the spreadsheet generated by the registration committee. Decide on paper where to place the racks, how many you need, and where to place the quilts. (Diane Kearney) Information table: Be available at the show for guest services responsibilities. Man the table in the lobby. Judging: Procure a judge, and a place to judge quilts. Get a copy of the spread sheet from quilt registration. Preside over judging. Keep all judging sheets to give to quilt makers at show. Order ribbons, and place on the quilts when the hanging is done. (Andrea Shlasko, Kathie Porteous) *Labels: Andrea Shlasko Main Street Merchants: Speak to Venice area merchants about putting a quilt in their window for display. Collect quilts from members, deliver to merchants, collect after the show and return to owners. (Diane Kearney) Mini Quilt Silent auction: Collect mini quilts from members, sort and hang them at the show, number them. Accept silent auction bids. One complete auction each day. Get quilts to winners and collect money. All proceeds benefit the South County Food Pantry. (Tavie Zeidler, and Seashell Sisters) 7

Memorial Wall: We set one area aside at each show to honor members that we have lost. The committee collects a small sample of our past members work, and includes a short bio. (Lauretta Sutton and Apple-Kers) Program setup and printing: some computer software knowledge is helpful. Program includes all quilt names and makers, a list of all winners, and information about the guild, and list of committees. Usually can be ed to printer. Picked up and delivered to admissions for the show. Publicity, print and web: Get the news of our show out there. Venice Gondolier, facebook, magazines, quilt shops, etc. (Nancy Larkin, Diane Kearney) Quilt Registration/ Quilt check in: Receive all quilt registration forms, set up spread sheet. Send spread sheet to label, judging, hanging program committees. Receive all quilts, check them in, issue receipts to circle reps (Barbara Willis, Sonja Jordan-Mowery) Raffle Tickets, sales: Have the raffle tickets printed, Take our quilt to various venues to sell tickets, i.e. other quilt guild meetings, art fairs, our own National Quilt Day. Get tickets to all members to sell. ( quilt is being made and should be ready for NQD) (Kathleen Heslin) Signage: Check all signs needed for show, refresh and update where needed. (Nancy Larkin) *Treasurer: Cathy Day and company Vendor Liaison and setup: Mail Vendor invitation letters, keep up with responses so we have all the vendors we need, find new vendors if needed, work with show chair for vendor placement. (Sue Balazs and Sew Whatz) Vendor Hop: set up a scavenger hunt for shoppers to visit all vendors for a drawing. ( Barb Cierny) Tea Room: Find a caterer to handle the tea room for the duration of the show (Becky Adam) As you can see, there is a lot involved in having a successful show. We need every member to take an active role. So, please contact a past committee chair, or a board member or me, via phone or . We would be happy to answer any questions you have. Thank you Caryl 8

Community Service Margaret LoBianco and Holly Bucciarelli would like to thank all those members who have been so generous with their time, talent and materials in making quilts and bibs for the Community Service Program. Our members are making some very beautiful quilts for donation to programs like Hospice, Children First (Head Start), Our Mother s House with Epiphany Church and Veteran s. The Veteran s quilts will go to the 50 Veteran s at Jacaranda Trace and to Hospice Veterans. At the September meeting we collected a record 53 quilts! We also collected 60 bibs! Thirtyfive bibs were delivered to North Port Head Start and 20 went to Venice Head Start. At the October meeting we collected a total of 32 quilts! At the November meeting we collected 29 quilts and 31 bibs! 36 Bibs went to Venice Head Start 8 Veteran s quilts 10 Hospice quilts (7 female and 3 male) 11 Head Start quilts ( 5 girls and 6 boys) Our members have been amazing! We have collected a total of 114 quilts and 127 bibs during the months of September, October and November. WOW! We have donated 175 quilts and 96 bibs since August. This was the combined efforts of the past and present Community Service volunteers and the generosity of our members throughout the year. 63 quilts went to Tidewell Hospice of Venice in November. Linda Pierce and Lisa Voigt, the volunteer coordinators of Tidewell Hospice of Venice, were deeply appreciative of the 63 beautiful quilts! (photo attached). What kind of patterns or kits do you like to make? Easy? More challenging, but not too time consuming? We are looking for your suggestions How can you help? We are in need of more Veteran s, Hospice and Head Start quilts. If you d like to help with Community Service quilts there will be kits that include, fabric, pattern, batting, binding and backing at the monthly meetings. We also have some finished tops that only need quilting, so if you are a long-arm quilter or you want to practice your free-motion quilting on your domestic machine, this is a great opportunity. Quilt sizes are on the VAQG website under Community Service. If you d like a smaller project we are also in need of bibs. Circle reps were provided 3 bib patterns that can be ed and printed if you were not at the November meeting. 9
