1 Pieces & Patches November 2012 Volume 28 Issue 3 President s Message It is already November. My sewing room is buried in scraps and threads, as I am racing to complete five bed-size quilts for my grandchildren. I would love to have them done in time for show and tell in November, but our meeting is so early..november 14 th. We, once again, had a large donation ready to go to the South County Food Pantry. Thank you to Sue Hamilton for delivering it for us. I know all of you are busy with Holiday preparations. And still we have items ready for our boutique, and our raffle quilt is almost complete. Plans for our holiday dinner are moving forward. As you make gifts, make an extra one for the tea cup auction. National Quilt Day is set for March 3 rd. Please let Cathy Hollar know that you will reprise your role from our last NQD. Remember how much fun we all had sharing our art with the community. The May dinner will be pot luck as always, but with a very different twist. You do not want to miss it. Martha Mullennex is planning some surprises. Quilt Escape promises to be another great time with good friends. Imagine 3 days with nothing to do but sew, eat, learn, eat, laugh, eat, drink, eat, play games, eat, sleep, or not, eat. And remember our Circus Challenge. I have seen some of the entries and I really want to win the quilt. It is certain to be a show stopper. Caryl See you at our November meeting.

2 Minutes of General Membership Meeting October 26, 2012 President Caryl Coss called the meeting to order at 7:00p.m. The September minutes were approved; Betty Jordt made the motion seconded by Will Trimmer. The treasurer s report as printed in the newsletter was approved. Sabra Liedtke made the motion, seconded by Dawn Hamman. Reports: Pinky Stewart reported that the next informal workshop will be November 28. The circus challenge block can be handed in on Nov 14, Nov 28, or at the Holiday dinner. (Payment deadline for Holiday dinner is 11/30/12.) She also introduced Patti Heald, the boutique chair for the next show. Patti announced that they made 24 scrap catchers at the last informal. November 28, we will be making plastic bag caddies. The January informal will be dedicated to making casserole caddies. Members can turn in boutique items whenever they are ready. Barbara Plough reported for the 2 nd VP: There are openings in all classes. There will be another class with Marie Anderson on Saturday at Venice Isles Estates. Betty Jordt reported that there are still openings for Quilt Escape. The sweatshirt class has been canceled. We will open up to others after the 12/12/12 Holiday dinner. Cathy Hollar and Kit Lee will chair National Quilt Day. Cathy will send out an to let people know they can keep the jobs they had last year. If they do not want them, then we will fill in the blanks. The date is March 3, Dawn Moore reported that we need to renew NQA membership. We need at least five of our members who are in NQA TO QUALIFY. She suggested we look at The site has quilt info available, and she is working on getting more. Newsletter deadline is Friday, October 26, Nancy Mundorf reported on membership. We have 102 members at the meeting, 1 guest, 3 new members, 4 renewals, and 298 members before the meeting. Linda Richter reported on community service. We got 8 quilts tonight; we need them in bright colors for the children. They delivered quilts to North Port on October 8 th. They need bibs made out of washcloths, quilts for Tidewell Hospice (lap size) and red, white and blue quilts for the Veterans. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45. 3 Informal Workshops There IS an informal in November. It will be November the week AFTER Thanksgiving. Come on in and work on your projects and mingle with friends. There will also be a quick project available to make for the boutique if you want to do it. The next informal after this one will be on January 9. The workshops are at the Venice Community Center from 9:00 until 2:00. Pinky Stewart CIRCUS BLOCKS HEAR YE! HEAR YE!!! LAST CHANCE TO JOIN THE CIRCUS BLOCK CHALLENGE!!!! THE CLOWNS AND ANIMALS ARE LINING UP FOR THE BIG TOP S FINAL PARADE! SO JUGGLE SOME TIME BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS ARRIVE AND GET YOUR IMAGINATION WORKING OVERTIME TO CREATE A SUPER STAR CIRCUS BLOCK FOR OUR GUILD S CHALLENGE QUILT!!!!! Create a generous 12-1/2 inch total block size and use the special fabric in some way in the design. Deadline is the Holiday Dinner. Contact Jean Campbell or Pinky Stewart if you need fabric or help!!! NO PERFUME PLEASE! Please be thoughtful of those on chemo or suffering from allergies and do not wear perfume to our guild meetings. Thank you. 3

4 COMMUNITY SERVICE On October 8, 2012 Bonnie McRae and Linda Richter delivered 35 quilts and a dozen bibs to the North Port Children s First. The aides were very thankful for the quilts but really needed the bibs. They are washed daily and wear out fast. The children selected their own quilts and their names were printed on the quilt. Thank you ladies. Your efforts are appreciated. On October 23 Dawn Moore and Linda Richter attended Venice Children s First Grand Opening. We were able to take a tour of the facility, see the butterfly garden and watch the children on the playground. The staff thanked us for the many beautiful quilts we brought to the children. There is still time to make a quilt for a veteran. Pam Morris would like to collect as many quilts as she can get. She will take them to the Veteran s Hospital in Tampa. They are having a Christmas party in December and she hopes to give a quilt to every veteran. They would like small quilts for those in wheel chairs. Approximate size 30 or 32 inch square. They can be any color or pattern. The deadline is the next guild meeting in November. You can give them to Deb Iverson. Tidewell Hospice in Venice has a need for quilts for their patients. They can use patriotic quilts for their veterans. But colorful, bright ones are wanted too. The size they want is lap size. Just a cover to put over the patient while in bed. These quilts are sometimes given to a family member as a memorial. If the pattern contains white patches, then friends and family can write a note on the quilt to their loved one. 4

9 QUILT ESCAPE February 3-6, 2013 Your last chance to sign up for Quilt Escape will be at the Holiday dinner. We have outside quilters looking to join our classes. Those having quilting friends can pick up a non-member form at the Holiday dinner. The cost for guest will be $ As in prior years, non-members will be unable the get the member price if they join at this time. We are looking forward to having fun and meeting our guild quilting friends. 10 EDUCATION Betty Jordt and Barb Plough The November class with Karen Pharr will be another fun and creative class. Students signed up will have the choice of purchasing a materials kit for $25.00 or you can contact Barb Plough for a materials list. Barb has received the student class list on the web site for all classes as of the October meeting. Please check the list to be sure you are signed up. We will be updating the supply list for the classes as we receive them from the teachers.
