1 Pieces & Patches March 2017 Volume 32 Issue 6 Wow is it March already????? Hello All!!! President s Message If you were at the February meeting you were present for the Big Reveal we saw the mock-up for the 2018 Raffle Quilt and it is BREATHTAKING!!!! We have a marvelous superstar of a quilt designed by our own Janine Ward, and I know I will be buying a whole lot of tickets!!! We are hoping to have raffle tickets for National Quilting Day so we can start our sales right away. Talking about National Quilting Day -if you haven t signed up yet (Sunday March 19th from 12-4) please contact Sue Hamilton or Susan Singer and find out how you can help. I d like to remind you all that we rent Classroom F for Informal Workshops on the second Wednesday of every month all year. In the summer we also use the classroom on the fourth Wednesdays. The Quilt Show Boutique is now officially in gear and they will be holding Teach-Ins at Informals to start production of boutique items. Come and make two one for the show and one for YOU! What if you DON T want to make a boutique item at Informal??? DON T DO IT! You are not required to make a boutique item if you come to Informal nobody will look at you funny or scold you or say anything to give you a guilt trip. Come just because you want to hang out, bring your own work, meet your friends and meet new ones, snoop around and look at what everyone else is doing, and JUST HAVE FUN. Wear your badge and bring your lunch we d love to see you! Circles please start on your Circle Blocks now so that your Snowbirds can bring them back up North to finish them. Each Circle makes enough blocks for a quilt and these are auctioned off at the Quilt Show. We raise anywhere from $2,500 to $4,000 with this auction. The Quilt Show is big fun, big shopping, and big inspiration, but it is also our bi-annual fundraiser. Boutique items and Circle Blocks are very important. The Venice Guild is known for always having the BEST boutique we are proud of that. Continued on page 2

2 President s Message continued from page 2 Tavie Zeidler has officially called for Mini-Quilts for the Show. We hold a silent auction each day for Mini-Quilts usually around a day. All of the proceeds usually around $2,000 - go to the South County Food Pantry. Keep the size to about an 80 perimeter so roughly 20 on a side. Call Tavie for more information. I love making all the cool stuff for the Quilt Show I hope you all do too. It feels good to be able to help the Guild and the community we share. We can also help in another way - I d like to remind you also to consider making a quilt to donate to the ALS project. Jean Campbell is the person to contact for information. One last reminder every year in May the Board allocates donations to charities nominated by the members. I already have two charities nominated if you would like to propose a charity to receive a donation, please send me an . Happy Quilting I ll see you at National Quilting Day! andrea Sunshine Card Requests Barbara Cierny is our Corresponding Secretary. If you know of someone that needs a card from the guild, please notify Barbara at bcierny@comcast.net ENHANCE YOUR VAQG EXPERIENCE Classes are great. Guild meetings are great but the real way to enjoy your membership in the Guild is to belong to a Circle. In a Circle you can make new friends meeting in small groups and share knowledge. If you would like to join a Circle please look for me at the back of the room before the meeting and I will try to find a Circle for you. Or call me at Jean Drever 2

4 Venice Area Quilters Guild General Meeting Wednesday, February 22, 2017 The meeting was called to order at 7:01 P.M. Our President; Andrea Shlasko led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Recording Secretary s Report: A motion to approve was made by Char Sims and a second was made by Joan Cusack. The minutes of the January meeting were approved by the membership. President s Report: The Winners Circle were the hostesses for new members and guests tonight., March will be the Clamshells and April will be the Spice Girls. Sue Hamilton brought lollipops to share tonight. The nominating committee is looking for someone to fill the 1St Vice President position on the board. Crystal Allan is retiring. Please call or Kathy Casey, if you are interested. You can find her number in the paper directory or online. Informals are held every month on the second Wednesday. For May, June, July and August we also hold Informals on the 4th Wednesday. Informals are open sewing sessions that run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Once our Quilt Show Boutique committee is up and operational, the committee will have Teach-Ins where you can learn to make a small fun project. It is hoped that you will make one item fort he boutique, and of course you can make one or more for yourself once you know the pattern. Andrea stressed that you do NOT have to make the boutique project. If you are making items on your own or in your circle, then just come to sew and chat. On March 8 the Teach-In will be tissue covers and bag holders. It has come to our attention that there are some incorrect circle listings in the directory. When you have a chance, go online and have a look at your name and see if the circle listing is correct. Please notify Barb Hargrave if it is not. The budget meeting for the budget will be held on March 9th The Finance Committee will need all your budget needs by February 28th Please get this information to Pat Michaels. There is a quilt show on each of the first three weekends in March. Please check the Things to do page on the website for more Information. Every year we give away money to local charities in May. If you have a charity to propose, please Andrea with the exact name of the charity and a brief reason why the guild should donate to it. Andrea will research it and find out how they spend their money. Andrea introduced Diane Kearney - a very new member of the guild and our Publicity Committee. She would like to update the Circle pages. She will visit circles and take photos or circles can provide current photos, if they choose to. Her will be in the online directory She was also successful in getting the guild into the newspaper between the board meeting and the guild meeting. 2nd Vice President: Becky Adam. The Classes with Cheryl Sleboda today and yesterday were incredible on dimensional sewing and lightups. There was a piece of fabric found in the parking lot. See Becky. Next month s classes will be on March 22nd and 23rd with Jacquie Gering. 30 are signed up for the 22nd and 33 are signed up for the 23rd.As they have said many times, they have never before seen anyone not get into a class. The class maximum is 24. It must be magic. In April, a guild member; Barb Plough will be teaching a class about machine applique on tea towels. There are still openings. Please see the website for more information. 4

Raffle Quilt for Quilt Show 2018: A mock up was revealed showing the design of the quilt. The completed top has been sent to a quilter and should be completed by May. The quilt was designed by Guild Member, Janine Ward and was put together by a group of guild members. It is a complicated pattern and no pattern will be available. We will have a truly special, one of a kind, colorful, and gorgeous raffle quilt. The mock up will also be displayed at National Quilting Day, as the quilt has not been photographed yet and tickets have not been printed. Quilt Show: Val Wurster Val is filling the committees with chairpersons. The all important Boutique, which is such a big moneymaker for the guild (and provides for our teachers) now is being headed up by Kathy Casey, Pinky Stewart, & Linda Creed. Books and Magazines will be chaired by Patti Heald. Barbara Shapiro is chairing Circle Blocks. Blocks can be any size. Please include a pattern with the blocks. No sashing or borders are to be included with the blocks. A question was raised by a member so Andrea explained what circle blocks are to the membership. They are also a good moneymaker at the quilt show. A couple of the committees still needing chairs are Quilt Basket Raffle, Appraiser, Challenge Quilt and Set Up. See the Website for more complete information on the quilt show. Tavie Zeidler will be chairing the Mini Quilt Auction for the quilt show. She explained that the maximum size for a mini quilt is 80" diameter. She is hoping for quilts as half will be auctioned off each of the 2 days of the quilt show. Quilt Escape: Dawn Moore A total of 66 attended the Quilt Escape at the Christian Retreat Center in Bradenton. Dawn explained that the quilt show is held in the even years and the e cape is held in the odd years as a reward for the hard work of the quilt show. Dawn gave a brief report of the escape. They are asking for a few Veterans Quilts in Red, White & Blue if possible. They were extremely grateful! We will drop quilts off as we gather a good number of them. Also we will be turning quilts in for Head Start in August. All help is appreciated! Thanks to all who are helping this very important project!
