1 Pieces & Patches September 2015 Volume 31 Issue 1 President s Message We have had a break from our monthly VAQG meetings and classes and during that break some of us have had a chance to visit family and friends up North. I hope you all enjoyed your summer. I am not only looking forward to the weather cooling off this fall but also to getting back in the swing of the guild. It has been fun this summer attending many of the informals and working on head start quilts and boutique items. It is hard to believe that the quilt show will be here before you know it. Ginny Perkins has been working very hard at making the show a great one. Do you have your quilts ready to put into the show? If you have never entered a quilt in the show I challenge you to do it this year. Remember, you don't have to wait until you have a perfect quilt. None of the quilts in the show are perfect. Put at least one thing in the show if you have never done it before. Our membership books will be ready for you to pick up at the September meeting. Look them over and see all the great information in them. Our membership committee has worked hard on them. Check out the back cover to see all the classes we are offering. There is still room to sign up on some of them. On the first page you will find all the board members listed along with the committee heads. You will also find the web site address and password on the inside front cover. Keep your book handy so you can reference it when needed. Hope to see many of you at the September 23, meeting or soon after if you are still up North. Happy quilting, Mary Johnson

4 VAQG 2016 Quilt Show Quilt Show news...just a reminder that on Saturday, October 24th, the Boutique will be selling holiday-themed items at the craft fair at Jacaranda Country Club. Jane and Ruth will need your items prior to that date to price them. If you want to attend the show, admission is free and time is 9-2. It's a great show so if you are in town, please come...stop by the boutique's booth...and say 'hello'. If you have questions, call me, Ruth Fortsch, or Jane Jeffrey. Road Scholar has donated a gift certificate and items for the basket raffle. In addition, an ambassador from Road Scholar will be speaking at our September members' meeting. The ambassador is bringing two gift certificates to be given away that evening. The presentation will be about the escorted trips this non-profit organization give and will include some craft camps. If you are not familiar with Road Scholar, it used to be called Elderhostel. They have been around for many, many years and if you want to check out their website trywww.roadscholar.org. I have been on several trips with them and always find the care and education you receive gets an A+...at least from me. Don't miss this presentation and a chance to win a gift certificate! We are looking for members with a background in bookkeeping, retail cash handling or bank tellers. There are a number of jobs at the quilt show for members who like to accurately count and handle money. We need sales people at the Boutique tables, a head Boutique cashier as well as counters and verifiers in the Treasury room. We have short shifts, half day and all day shifts. There are both sitting and standing jobs. This is a great way to get to know other members, have fun and be an important part of the 2016 Quilt Show. 9 A Scrappy Mystery By: Andrea Shlasko and Kathie Porteous As you probably guessed from the title I have finally done two things. I have taken on a partner, and together we have designed a scrappy Mystery. Please note that this quilt can also be made using two fabrics or a small selection of fabrics. It will be made using 2 strips. You can decide to go all scrappy, or make all your lights one color and use scrappy choices for the darks or you can just choose one dark and one light. If you decide on just two colors buy about 1 ½ yards of each. I am sure you will enjoy this quilt any way you color it. Just make sure that your darks and lights contrast sharply. If you are going scrappy on your lights be sure that they are all of the same value. Here is a way to determine value: Lay all your fabrics next to each other and then squint REALLY hard. This will essentially reduce the colors into shades of grey. You can easily see if they are the same shade of grey and thus have the same value. This quilt has no triangles and no set-ins so it would be good for a beginner but interesting enough that a more advanced quilter would enjoy it too. Please note that the number of strips needed is approximate. It is best to start cutting the large pieces out and whenever you have ends left on a strip cut out some smaller pieces. If you notice, we assumed you would do that for piece E because your strip might be a bit short. I based my calculations on a 40 long strip so you may use less fabric. I did NOT include borders in my calculations. You are going to need to decide whether you want them later. The block finishes to 13½ and the finished size without borders will be 40 ½ X 54. 10 Circle Spotlight Deborah Iversen is a founding member of the Venice Area Quilt Guild. The Guild was formed by a group of women who had taken Quilt Classes though the Adult Educational Program provided by Sarasota County in Venice. A year after the Guild organized, Deborah thought it would be a great idea to have a Quilt Shop in the area, founding Deborah's Quilt Basket in March, The nearest shop was in Lakeland, 100 miles away. Deborah grew up in retail spending a lot of time at her parents Jewelry Store wrapping gifts starting at age 6. Her Grandmother in South Dakota was a quiltmaker and was inspirational in formulating a love of quilts. In 1983, she left her position as a Merchandise Manager with Burdines Department store to combine her love of quilting and retail experience. She has served on a Retail Advisory Board for Quilting Treasures Fabrics, won numerous ribbons at local Quilt Shows, 3rd Place in Hoffman Challenge Garment category, an original design appeared in Quilter's Newsletter, & enjoys designing patterns used in her shop. She is a member of the Clamshells Circle, acting as their contact person. Her favorite charity is Pillowcases for Kids that are given to All Children's Hospital. When she is not quilting, Deborah enjoys visiting her family in South Dakota, where she has been known to fix fences, stack bales of hay, and tend to horses at her Dad's Ranch. Past experiences include cattle round-ups, snow-skiing, river-rafting, canoeing & extended trips on a motorcycle. Safer loves include the opera and plays! Membership Welcome new and renewed members. The VAQG Membership Directory for will be available from the Circle Reps for distribution in September and at the September 23rd VAQG meeting.
