I hope all of you enjoyed a peaceful and joyous holiday with family and friends. We are now ready to take on a new year. It will be the best ever with interesting programs, enlightening bees and lots of fun and friendship. Just to keep all of you up to date, thanks to your generosity we were able to donate $ to St. Aidan s Episcopal Church in memory of Kay Brill. I want to thank all of you for being so responsive to my requests. You are an incredible group of ladies and gentleman and I am so grateful for your friendship. A copy of the letter is printed below. We now have quilt labels with our logo and address at HHCS. The labels are available from Susan Crowe and there is a place on the labels for each member making a donated quilt to add their name. Susan also has batting available for

2 those of you making charity quilts. Kay was a valued member of our guild for a number of years and did much to contribute to our group. She shared her quilts and abilities with all of us. She enriched out meetings with her joyful presence and she is missed by all of us who had the pleasure to know her. I am sure the St. Aidan s Episcopal Church can put this small amount of money to good use. Thank you for allowing us the pleasure of contributing in her name. Vernon Chapter of Quilters Unlimited January Program Former resident of Old Town Alexandria and MVQU member Beth Smith will present a lecture and trunk show on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 12:30 pm to 2 pm at Hollin Hall Senior Center. The theme of her presentation is "A Trip Through My Quilting Life and How I Ended Up Using Solids for a Modern Twist!" Let's welcome her back to MVQU with a full house. Refreshments will be served after the presentation. 3 January Fat Quarter Giveaway! Go Green! When you bring a fat quarter to the business meeting, you will be given a ticket. You can bring as many fat quarters as you would like, and will be given a ticket for each fat quarter. There will be a drawing and the owner of the winning ticket will be given the fat quarters. For January, members are asked to bring a green fabric. The winner will get to choose next month s color QU Quilt Show News June 1-3, 2018 Just Piece It! The QU quilt show quilt registration site will be open for use starting on January 1st and will close on February 28th. The website for quilt registration is qushowentry.com. The website is very user-friendly, but if you have questions, reach out to Zoe Ann Brown or Ginny Mayes. If you need help with the registration, we can help by using a paper form first. The size limits and other guidance regarding the quilts for the show are provided on the registration site. Please note that the site allows you to enter four quilts, and an extra one if it was for a challenge, for a total of five, including the challenge quilt. Also, once you begin filling in the registration site, you have only twelve hours to complete the task; if you get interrupted and don t come back until after those twelve hours have transpired, any information you entered but did not complete by clicking Finish may be lost and you would have to begin again. Please register your show entries before the photography sessions so that we have the registration numbers for the photographer. More details regarding the photography sessions will be forthcoming. Charity Quilts In November, Susan Crowe delivered to the home of the president of Borromeo House: 24 receiving blankets, 2 knitted blankets and 10 comfort quilts. Borromeo House, located in Arlington, provides temporary housing and support for young single mothers. In December, Susan and Dianne Tippins delivered 12 receiving blankets, one knit shawl, and 14 quilts to United Community Ministries. Approximately 200 spools of thread from Blanche Ammann s home were donated to the Arlington Jail program. A small notions assortment was donated to the HHSC sewing group. January 16 Bee Enhancement: Ginny Mayes is going to do a demo on her personal passion - fidget quilts. She will bring fidget quilt materials and some sample blocks (and hopefully a couple of quilts!) and some copies of articles regarding fidget quilts. Patients with Alzheimer s and other conditions use fidget quilts to keep their hands busy and their minds calm. The small quilts are made of a variety of textures and are embellished with items such as zippers, Velcro, buttons or ribbons to keep hands busy. She will be encouraging thinking outside the box for materials & attachments to inspire you for the charity sew-in. January 30 - Charity sew-in: Making fidget quilts - bring your machines and outside the box ideas! These quilts should be small enough that everyone who comes completes at least one! There may be a prize or two! ( me if you have a special need for one of these - I do have a young man I am thinking about.)

4 Notes from Susan: Starting January 2, quilt labels for charity quilts will be available at the bees in groups of two. Let me know ahead of time if you need more than that. Thank you, Rickie Frost and T. Carter! Quilt batting for charity should be available by the middle of January. Dianne Tippins has agreed to be the batting jailer. Send her an after that and she will leave the charity batting you need in a box on her porch. Sometime in January charity kits should be available at the bees. Santa treated me to an Accuquilt! Most of what I'm working with currently is scraps so the GO should be helpful. March bee enhancement who would like to demonstrate curved piecing? Contact Susan Crowe. Mount Vernon Quilters Unlimited Business Meeting Tuesday, November 14, 2017 Hollin Hall Senior Center Call to Order: Vice President Ruth Roush called the meeting to order. There were 29 in attendance. The October minutes were approved. President s Report: The bylaws changes regarding membership, proposed by Quilters Unlimited, were discussed. The proposed changes had been sent to the MVQU membership in an eblast and posted on the blog. A motion was made and seconded to approve the changes. The motion passed. QU Report: Joyce Bounds, QU President, reported that QU, a 501c3 organization, has hired a lawyer and accountant to ensure that required paperwork is filed with the IRS. QU was notified of a penalty of $5000 for failing to file paperwork. The accountant has filed an appeal. The QU treasurer will send donation forms to each chapter. Chapter members will fill out the form as to what item was donated and to whom, but no value has to be declared. A list of those who donated to the QU boutique needs to be kept by each chapter.

5 QU officers are now insured. Treasurer s Report: Veronica Abrams reported that there was income of $ and expenses of $ to date. Vice Presidents Report: The Spinner workshop on October 25 by Barbara H. Cline was enjoyed by attendees. The next program will be January 23, 2018, presented by former member, Beth Smith. At the December luncheon, a quilt made by Kay Brill will be raffled, and proceeds will go to Kay s church. Announcements: There will be a Bee Enhancement on Tuesday, November 21 at 12:00 pm. Susan Crowe will have quickie potholders ready for completion. Participants should bring large, sturdy scissors. Zoe Ann Brown and Ginny Mayes, our chapter quilt collectors, will be attending a meeting in December about the quilt collection process. Libby Dudley announced that if anyone has a wall hanging size quilt to share, the quilt could be displayed at the Sherwood Hall Library or HHSC. Mary Mazzuchi asked for assistance in setting up and cleaning up, before and after the December 12 Holiday Luncheon. A sign-up sheet was available at the meeting. Bring Show and Tell and Spinner workshop pieces to the luncheon. Mary Mazzuchi announced that a Storybook Quilt program is going to held on November 15 at Long Branch Elementary School. Mary has made 280 squares for the children to draw on. Door prizes were awarded. Dianne Tippins explained the fat quarter lottery, which will be held at each business meeting.
