2 CAREFULLY FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO MAKE YOUR FRACTION HUMAN! Use 2/3 of circle A for the person s body. Use 4/4 of circle B for the person s head. Divide circle C in half. Use 1/2 of circle C for one ear, and 1/2 of circle C for the other ear. Use 1/2 of rectangle D for one arm. Use the other one-half of rectangle D for the other arm. Use 1/2 of rectangle E for one leg, and use the other 1/2 for the other leg. Divide rectangle F into 5 parts. Use 1/5 for each finger on one arm. Divide rectangle G into 5 parts. Use 1/5 for each finger on the other arm. Divide circle H into 3 parts. Use 1/3 for the person s smile. Use 1/2 of triangle I for one eye, and use the other 1/2 for the other eye. Use 1/2 of circle J for the person s hat. Use one-third of rectangle K for one foot. Use 1/3 of rectangle K for the other foot. Use the last 1/3 of rectangle K for a feather in your person s hat.

4 REFLECTION USE YOUR INSTRUCTION SHEET AND YOUR COMPLETED FRACTION HUMAN TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS 1. If you had used 2/4 of Circle A, would your body have been smaller or larger? Explain. 2. Instead of asking you to use 4/4 to describe the amount of Circle B to use for the head, how else could that fraction have been written? Explain. 3. Even though they used the same fractional amount, explain why some people s fraction humans may have different sized legs and arms than other people s fraction humans. 4. How would the fingers have been different if you used a circle instead of a rectangle divided into 5 parts? 5. What fraction of the circle used for the smile is left over? 6. Your fraction human is eating a rectangular candy bar that has been divided into eight pieces. Draw the candy bar in your fraction human s hand and shade in the amount of candy that would be left AFTER he eats 5/8 of it. Write the fraction here.
5 SUGGESTED ANSWERS 1. If you had used 2/4 of Circle A, would your body have been smaller or larger? Explain. The body would have been smaller because a smaller fractional amount of the circle would have been used (2/4 is less than 2/3). 2. Instead of asking you to use 4/4 to describe the amount of Circle B to use for the head, how else could that fraction have been written? Explain. 1. When the numerator and denominator are the same, the fraction is equal to Even though they used the same fractional amount, explain why some people s fraction humans may have different sized legs and arms than other people s fraction humans. If they cut the rectangle horizontally they would be longer, but if they cut it vertically they would be shorter. 4. How would the fingers have been different if you used a circle instead of a rectangle divided into 5 parts? Answers may vary, but most students will mention that the shape would be different. Instead of a rectangle, it would have had a tip. 5. What fraction of the circle used for the smile is left over? 2/3 of the smile was left over. 6. Your fraction human is eating a rectangular candy bar that has been divided into eight pieces. Draw the candy bar in your fraction human s hand and shade in the amount of candy that would be left AFTER he eats 5/8 of it. Write the fraction here. 3/8 of the candy bar should be shaded in.
