5 ASHRAE Provides Assistance to Future Engineers Through ATLANTA Twenty-nine students are receiving $152,000 worth of financial assistance for the school year via ASHRAE s scholarship program. In addition, ASHRAE announced creation of several new scholarships, which will be available for Those are: Gordon V.R. Holness Scholarship, named in honor of ASHRAE Presidential Member Holness, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, who served as president in ASHRAE Central New York Chapter King-Traugott Scholarship, named in memory of Fritz Traugott, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, and Harry King, Life Member. King created the Air Conditioning Engineering Technology program at SUNY Canton in 1946 and helped orchestrate its tremendous growth until his retirement in After receiving his doctorate from Syracuse University, Traugott went on to become a guest lecturer and lifelong supporter of the University, sharing a vision for the motivation, inspiration, and education of young engineers, especially in energy conservation. James R. Bullock Jr. Scholarship, named in honor of Bullock, P.E., Life Member, a longtime ASHRAE member who serves as president of Environmental Air Systems Inc. Freshman Engineering Scholarship Over the course of 27 years, ASHRAE has awarded more than $1.45 million to over 300 deserving undergraduate and graduate students. For more information on ASHRAE scholarships, visit scholarships. Applications are now being accepted for the undergraduate, regional/chapter and university-specific scholarships. The deadline is December 1, ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. 6 GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE House Subcommittee Approves Comprehensive Energy Legislation This week the US House Energy and Power Subcommittee of the Energy & Commerce Committee unanimously approved a new draft of a comprehensive energy bill. Significantly, the new draft does not include the potentially harmful building energy codes language from H.R.1273 that was included in previous versions of the legislation. While it is expected that this language will be offered as an amendment when the draft bill is marked-up by the full Committee or considered on the House floor, the removal of this language marks a major milestone for ASHRAE and our allies, and is proof of our effectiveness in educating Members of Congress on the likely pitfalls of such language. MORE ARTICLES To find more arcles like this visit government-affairs-updates Click the bu8on below to subscribe and receive informaon on acvies within Congress and Federal agencies from the ASHRAE Washington office. Full information on the Subcommittee s consideration of the draft bill, including legislative text, video, and opening statements by leadership can be found by clicking here. Markup of House Energy Bill Postponed Due to Disagreements Over Climate Change, Building Energy Codes Earlier this week, the US House Energy & Commerce Committee suddenly put the brakes on plans to mark up the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of This is the same bill previously referred to as the House comprehensive energy bill or Architecture of Abundance legislation. The bill contains several provisions of interest to ASHRAE members, including support for workforce development, energy efficient federal data centers, a report on the energy and water savings potential of thermal insulation, energy efficiency in schools, and energy savings performance contracting. The decision to postpone the markup results from a failure to reach agreement between Democrats and Republicans on issues such as climate change, the federal government s use of fossil fuels, and building energy codes. While somewhat surprising, this is likely only a speedbump, as it is widely expected that the Committee will take up the bill later this month or early next. By that time, the two Parties will either decide to proceed with a bipartisan bill that may contain more controversial amendments offered during floor debate, or Republicans will choose to charge ahead with a bill more heavily laden with their priorities. Hope remains strong for a bipartisan bill, as it was unanimously approved in July by the Energy and Power Subcommittee of the Energy & Commerce Committee. Additional information on the markup is available here.
