Kean Wind Turbines, Inc is a recently formed company with the goal of making a low-cost, efficient, simple, and smaller version than the typical 3-blade wind turbine. We thank him for the hard work and dedication he has given to this section. For this year, the secretary position will be covered by the remaining executive officers. The rest of the executive positions have been re-elected for another term. We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. Albert Einstein Website Our website is now up and running. Visit to learn about upcoming events and join in on-line discussion. Scholarships Last year we made a donation to the Southern Tier Catholic School/ Archbishop Walsh Academy to help fund a group of 30 students on a mission at the Challenger Learning Center. We were also able to donate to the Hinsdale Central School to help them cover the costs for attending the regional science fair. Of the eight students that went to the Syracuse Fair four received High Honors, two received Honors, and one received Highest Honors. Awards for the fair at Alfred State were third place in the high school division, second place in the middle school division, and best team. Thank you, members, for your generous support. We would not be able to provide scholarship assistance to our community without you.

3 The ASME Reporter Page 3 of 6 Press Release - - June 2014 J. Robert Sims, Jr. Begins Term As President of ASME The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Final NEW YORK, June 11, 2014 J. Robert Sims, Jr., senior engineering fellow at Becht Engineering Co. Inc., Liberty Creek, N.J., has been elected president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for a one-year term beginning July ASME issued the announcement at the Society s 2014 Annual Meeting, which concludes June 11 in Portland, Ore. Sims becomes the 133rd president of ASME, an organization of 130,000 members worldwide. He has been an active member of ASME for more than 33 years and is a recognized authority on risk-based technologies. At Becht Engineering, Sims provides consulting services in failure analysis of pressure equipment, pressure vessel and piping system design and analysis, mechanical integrity evaluation and Fitness-For-Service analysis, and the design of high pressure oil and gas well equipment. Prior to joining Becht Engineering in 1998, Sims worked for more than thirty years with Exxon (now ExxonMobil), the last ten years as a pressure equipment specialist with worldwide responsibility for standards and improving equipment integrity. Sims is a fellow of ASME and has served in a number of leadership roles, particularly in areas involving the Society s codes, standards and certification processes. He is the recipient of the Society s Dedicated Service Award (1995), the J. Hall Taylor Codes and Standards Medal (2004) and the Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal (2006). Sims earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University and served two years as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.

4 The ASME Reporter Page 4 of 6 Letter from the President ASME Re-Organization It is with great expectations that I begin my term as president of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I am honored to carry on a grand tradition and I m grateful to our many past presidents who have led our Society and have left a legacy of engineering excellence. I look forward to working with all our volunteers, members and staff to optimize ASME s performance as we focus our diverse interests into a unified Society an effort we re calling ONE ASME. As I said during my inaugural comments at the Annual Meeting last month, the ONE ASME model will help us to strengthen the Society s role in the global engineering landscape and will establish a new Technical Events and Content Sector and a new Group Pathways and Support system to encourage greater member engagement in ASME activities. These improved gateways will help ensure that ASME will remain a vital and relevant Society for decades to come. ASME is exercising its leadership by taking a balanced approach to reaching better solutions. To do this we must remain focused on our mission and strategic initiatives while trying new things, and sharing our ideas, thoughts and opinions so that collectively we can achieve outcomes that benefit all of us. Throughout the coming year, there will be much more information to come regarding these changes. A number of activities have already taken place, including the Member Assembly at the Annual Meeting in Portland, Ore., in June, and a meeting for Division Leaders held in Kansas City on July 12. (There s an accompanying article in this edition of ASME News with further details about the Kansas City Division Leaders meeting.) The ONE ASME Group on ASME.org is another great resource for staying up-to-date and posting your questions. A brochure providing an overview, Engineering a Brighter Future, is available for downloading on the Group page as well. I encourage you to take a look to learn more about these exciting developments. As we observe today s engineering landscape we see a number of areas that are transforming the way engineers contribute to making the world a better place. One of the pivotal areas is the new technology that is leading the transformation of the manufacturing industry. Some even call it the new industrial revolution. Advanced manufacturing and the advent of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is utilizing computer-driven designs to accelerate production and create new business models that are contributing to the enhancement of global trade, a revival of manufacturing industries in the developed world and the creation of new industries in

5 The ASME Reporter Page 5 of 6 Interesting Fact of the Month Aeolipile, or Hero Engine, is a simple bladeless radial steam turbine which spins when the central water container is heated. Torque is produced by steam jets exiting the turbine, much like a tip jet or rocket engine. In the 1st century AD, Hero of Alexandria described the device, and many sources give him the credit for its invention. The aeolipile Hero described is considered to be the first recorded steam engine or reaction steam turbine. The name derived from the Greek word "Αἴολος" and Latin word "pila" translates to "the ball of Aeolus", Aeolus being the Greek god of the air and wind. Source: Wikipedia the developing world. Over the past few decades, manufacturing has evolved from a labor-intensive set of mechanical processes to a more sophisticated set of IT-based processes called advanced manufacturing. In a Wall Street Journal article titled A Revolution in the Making (June, 10, 2013), Michael Idelchik, head of advanced technologies at GE s global research lab said Manufacturing is undergoing a change that is every bit as significant as the introduction of interchangeable parts or the production line, maybe even more so. Likewise, President Obama in his February 2013 State of the Union address said that additive manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make just about everything. Next month in Buffalo, N.Y., ASME will hold its Advanced Design & Manufacturing Impact Forum [co-located with the ASME 2014 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference and hosted by the University at Buffalo. This new ASME program will focus on the intersection of advanced design and advanced manufacturing in industrial and consumer applications. The fourday event, beginning August 17, will facilitate conversations on emerging technologies, applications, and solutions required to compete in the global advanced design and manufacturing marketplace. We hope you can attend. ASME strives to remain at the forefront of engineering innovation. Together as ONE ASME we can work collaboratively to expand the Society s impact and influence in the engineering community and better serve our membership and the global engineering market. J.
