2 John Laurence Busch Historian and author John Laurence Busch will attempt to re-calibrate your mind before showing why the proposition of making the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a "steamship" was met with a mixture of skepticism and fear. He then will show how Captain Moses Rogers designed and built a revolutionary vessel that addressed that skepticism and fear, thereby creating the first example of globalized high technology in history. The presentation is based upon his book, STEAM COFFIN: Captain Moses Rogers and The Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier. STEAM COFFIN has received widespread praise and acclaim, as evidenced by more than two dozen positive book reviews in periodicals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. John s tour for STEAM COFFIN so far has taken him from Maine to Puerto Rico to California, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, where he has made over 300 presentations before a wide variety of audiences. "Busch's supremely readable account...represents the creation of a longneeded missing piece of maritime history... It may properly be termed a pageturner, and is strongly recommended." 3 Chapter Update It was very interesting to hear about the collaborations that are coming out of the organization LIFT, Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, from Dr. Dennis Harwig. LIFT opens the doors for research opportunities both with businesses looking for a specific design, and with the universities who have the educational and personnel resources for performing the research. Our next event is Vendor s Night, on November 15 th. It should be an interesting night, with a presentation about the technological impact of steamships on history. The speaker will be John Laurence Busch, historian and author of STEAM COFFIN, an account of the development of the steamship Savannah and the formation of the Savannah Steam Ship Company.
