1 Focus on ASHRAE Technology & Membership Education Volume 60, Issue 2 President s Message It appears the changing of the seasons has made its presence known this last week. I hope everyone is enjoying the start of Fall in the heartland and here is to hoping Winter doesn t try to crash the Fall party too soon. I also hope you all enjoyed our presentation last month from Tim Wentz. We are very lucky as a chapter to have such a tremendous speaker as one of our members. REMINDERS We had great attendance at both meetings. Our team is very interested in your feedback on our meetings (Topics, Food, Locations, etc.) If you could please fill out the Program Evaluations after the meetings we would appreciate it. Our Board of Governors and each of the chairs are dedicated to bringing value to your Nebraska ASHRAE meetings and ASHRAE membership. I m personally committed to reading all of the program evaluations. For those of you that are not aware, on July 1 st of this year, Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) became a grassroots committee. This change will ensure YEA has a strong foundation within ASHRAE to continue with the success of the program over the past decade. The move to Grassroots will put even more focus on developing resources and programs for all chapters. Some of the programs include Leadership Weekends, Leadership U, LeaDRS, Awards, etc. Our local YEA committee hosted their first YEA event last month. They hosted a putt-putt golf outing followed with a happy hour. From all accounts fun was had by all! They have planned another set of technical sessions in Omaha and Lincoln this month. See the flyer later in the newsletter for more details. No need to be YEA (under 35) to attend! Our next Chapter meeting in Omaha is a building tour at Alvine s new office on October 9. The Lincoln Section will be Wednesday October 10 at Valentino s. I look forward to seeing you there. 2 October Meetings OMAHA Alvine Building Tour Wellness in Buildings Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 tour begins at 4:00 pm Alvine Building,1201 CASS ST OMAHA, NE Come take a tour of the new Alvine building! On the corner of 13th and Cass, Alvine s new building was designed for WELL Building Standards. We ll get an inside look at the building and hear more about the overall design as well as the WELL Building design and certification process. LINCOLN Evidence-Based Interactions between Indoor Environmental Factors and Their Effects on K-12 Student Achievement with Dr. Lily Wang Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 Valentino s, Buffet ($15) Dr. Lily Wang will be presenting some of the results of her 4-year, EPA-funded research project that seeks to see what affect school environments have on student s health and achievement. She has been working along-side Dr. Clarence Waters (UNL), Dr. Josephine Lau (UNL), and Jim Bovaird (UNL s Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools) to measure acoustical, lighting, thermal, and air quality data in more than 200 Nebraska classrooms over time to establish how they affect student achievement and determine the relative significance of each environmental variable. This information is valuable in helping school districts with limited funds make informed decisions on where to make improvements to best impact student achievement and for the school design community to have a better understanding of how to better design for the benefit of its occupants. Dr. Wang is a professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Faculty Development at UNL. She teaches several graduate-level acoustics classes in addition to serving as the Acoustical Society of America President for the year.
