4 The editor: What is EPPD and how relevant is this division to our present world? Dr. Joshi: EPPD is Electronic &Photonic Packaging Division of ASME, has been around for the past years, and seeks to establish a harmonized relationship between the use and research into Photonic packaging. As we move to a new era in packaging and smart devices we are looking more into the use of electronics and photonic technology in our designs. Yogendra Joshi. P.h.D The editor: What are your primary responsibilities as EPPD Chair? What are some of the challenges that you see down the road as Chair of EPPD? Dr. Joshi: Just like any other Divisions of ASME, the EPPD has a 5 member Executive Committee which oversees the affairs of the Division with specific roles, the chair of the Division is responsible to monitoring and controlling the day to day activities of the Division including but not limited to: Prioritizing duties and activities. Coordinate with the central sources of ASME on budgeting and financial activities. Increase the membership base of the Divisions through seminars and conferences for both students and graduates, just like what we just did with ASME Atlanta Section. Develop mode linkages with other Divisions e.g. Applied Mechanics and Heat transfer Divisions for joint activities. International outreach. Some of the challenges we have faced is how to start and continue growth in student s participation, graduate engineers and industrial participation. The Editor: who is also the Section Advisor for the University of Mines in Tarkwa, Ghana, asked Dr. Joshi how he can help increase membership in the University in Ghana. ASME Section News 4
5 Dr. Joshi: The starting point in getting students involved is letting them select EPP Division as their Technical Division when they are signing up for ASME, Once that is done a whole lot of opportunities will be available, scholarships, mentorship, leadership experience, etc. The editor: How can a member of ASME benefit from EPPD / what roles can one play? Dr. Joshi: There are a lot of benefits in terms of students participation in EPPD, organizational involvement of students include taking up roles in the Division to increase the students organizational skills, and also roles in helping other students. We have regular meetings at the IMECE where we discuss new developments in heat transfer and other developments in this respect. Technically students get the opportunity to present papers at our meeting during the IMECE, they also get the chance to interrupt with engineers and build relationship in mentorship. The editor: How can industries in and around Atlanta benefit from EPPD? What kind of industries? Can you name a few businesses? Dr. Joshi: The vast amount of knowledge and research work by some of our members can go a long way in helping industries to come out with new products and it will help them implement cost effective models since research has been done already. The interbank conference jointly organized by EPPD and IEEE is a platform for industries to display their products and equally get suggestions from members. Our Divisions work is directly related to companies that deal more into electronics: cell phone, relays, microelectronics industries, space craft designs and packaging companies. Businesses like IBM, HP, GE, Lockheed Martin, and Siemens. The editor: It is a great honor for our section to have you (one of the section members) as an ASME Division Chair. How can the section help you in achieving your objectives as EPPD Chair? Dr. Joshi: Thank You, I have been hearing about ASME Atlanta Section but haven t had the chance to meet up the challenge, Just like what you allowed me to do today I am really honored with the participation, regular platform to disseminate the information about EPPD to increase membership. ASME Section News 5
6 The editor: What does ASME mean to you? How long have you been associated with ASME? Were you a member of ASME as a student? Where? Dr. Joshi: ASME is one of the largest Engineering Society and I am very happy to be part of it, I have been a member of ASME since my master s degree level over 30 years now. The editor: What other ASME positions have you held? Dr. Joshi: I have been the Editor for the EPPD Journal for some time, Asst. Editor for the heat transfer Division Newsletter. The editor: Please list any ASME award recognition that you have received? Dr. Joshi: Some of the ASME awards I received are the: ASME life time award, ASME Heat transfer Society award. It s been a pleasure interviewing with you Dr. Joshi and I really appreciate your time and answers, on behalf of ASME Atlanta Section I wish you all the best in your position. ASME Section News 6
