1 FY18 SWE San Diego Board of Directors Nominees FY18 President Nominee - Liz Wong FY18 VP Nominee - Shawnnah Castillo (Open Petition Addition) FY18 Secretary Nominee - Kamisha Mason FY18 Treasurer Nominees - Joan Fisher, Jacqueline Tran FY18 Section Representative Nominee - Laura Hershberger FY18 Alternate Section Representative Nominee - Harmonie Edelson FY18 President Nominee Liz Wong Liz is an active member of the SWE-SD Professional Section and currently serving on the FY17 SWE-SD Board of Directors (BOD) as a Section Representative. She is also involved with the Program Development Grant (PDG) Committee and K-12 Outreach Committee at the Society level. With over 20 years of engineering experience, SWE leadership and insight, Liz is primed to serve SWE-SD well as FY18 Section President. She has proven leadership and management experience as well as serving as a role model for women engineers and students. She received the FY17 Outstanding Engineering Professional award for SWE Sonora Region. As current Section Rep, she is familiar with providing status reports and meeting minutes at monthly board meetings, attending regional meetings at the SWE conferences, and providing the connection between the society and the section. Her leadership and experience at the Society level will provide invaluable insight and prove instrumental to leading our section as organizational changes and impacts are rolled out across the Society in FY18 and beyond. Liz joined SWE while as a collegiate and quickly appreciated the value and benefits of SWE, taking interest in member services, professional development, attending conferences and networking. But it was her passion for outreach that brought her into SWE and kept her involved and
2 giving back. She is a dedicated volunteer at Invent It Build It (IIBI) outreach program at Annual Conference each year and led the Girl Workshop for 150 middle school girls at last year s ABJ Region Conference. In addition, Liz served as the FY12-FY15 SWE-SD K-12 Outreach Committee Chair to plan and facilitate STEM programs reaching over 20,000 local students during that period. In this capacity, she worked closely with fellow SWE members, STEM volunteers, peer organizations, industry sponsors, academia staff, community leaders, and local school districts. Liz graduated from Duke University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. She is a Systems Engineer at The MITRE Corporation, an independent, not-for-profit organization working in the public interest. When she s not working or volunteering at church or SWE, Liz enjoys sports, movies, board games, and spending time with her family. FY18 Vice President Nominee Shawnnah Castillo (Open Petition Addition) Shawnnah is seeking the opportunity to become an officer of SWE to be able to give back to the professional community with her experience, strength and continued growth and to extend her reach beyond the corporate landscape to enable other women and to provide them with the support and encouragement they need to succeed and feel valued. Shawnnah hopes to continue her own professional growth by being part of building a stronger community that develops women leaders in technology. Shawnnah has held various board positions such as secretary and treasurer for non-profit organizations and has lead workgroups for industry standard committees such as DICOM working groups. Shawnnah has a degree in Computer Science from the UCSD and an Executive MBA from SDSU and over 17 years of experience in the medical device industry. She has specific domain expertise in both business and technical as well as the leadership, education, training and motivation
3 necessary to successfully define and carry out strategic plans. She has worked for several fortune 500 companies (Danaher, Covidien and currently Illumina) and has over 14 years managing both small and large teams of 40 plus engineers, global and technically diverse teams, including UK, Australia, Ireland and India. Shawnnah has a reputation for building and developing effective global engineering teams, with significant experience in recruiting and retaining key talent, new technology and development process training, career development, succession planning, performance reviews, goal setting (S.M.A.R.T), promotions and merit increases. She has been recognized as a mentor by many, despite not having an official mentor-mentee relationship status. At Covidien, Shawnnah was appointed as the diversity site representative and was responsible for piloting inclusion programs relevant to the organization such as raising awareness about the importance of diversity, cultural sensitivity training and a developing a marketing strategy to increase diversity of job applicants for their local office. She was also part of a formal mentorship program where she mentored several individuals who were interested in growing into a technical leadership position. At High Tech High, she has volunteered her time by giving talks about potential careers as a software engineer to many young adults, both male and female, interested in pursuing a career in technology. FY18 Secretary Nominee Kamisha Mason Kamisha (Misha) Mason is an active member of SWE-SD and has been a SWE member since her collegiate days at her undergraduate alma mater. She has actively participated in outreach as a mentor, speaker and tour guide for several programs including SWE-SD STEP Up, Shadow Day and personally donating and engaging her company, Solar Turbines, to support SWE-SD programs including the ever popular Wine-and-Webinar.
4 A change agent and community role model, Kamisha has taken on active committee roles in several Employee Resource Groups (ERG) at Solar Turbines including Women s Initiative Network (WIN), Solar Women Engineers (SWE), and the Caterpillar African American Network (CAAN). She is part of the leadership team planning, coordinating meetings, and making sure tasks are implemented. Kamisha is friendly, respectful and knows how to get the job done. She has been a crucial member of a pilot program to bring diverse minds together to solve business problems. states her CAAN Community Chair Avery Watkins. Kamisha is also a member of NSBE and VP of Education for the Turbotoasters Club of Toastmasters International. Having started her college studies in Fashion Design, Kamisha decided to change directions after a couple of years seeking a bigger challenge and life purpose. She started over, graduating from Tennessee State University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Cum Laude in She earned her MS in Engineering Management from Lipscomb University in Kamisha recently finished her two year engineering rotation program within Solar Turbines, and has taken on her first permanent position as a Development Test Engineer. She is looking forward to making a difference in SWE and the community. FY18 Treasurer Nominee Jacqueline Tran Jacqueline (Jackie) Tran is an active member of SWE-SD first becoming active in SWE as a member during her freshman year at UC San Diego. She particularly values SWE as a great means to meet role models, gain career advice, and meet friends. She enjoys volunteering and has been a panelist and tour guide for several outreach programs including Envision and SWEET. While at UC San Diego, she took on leadership roles serving as the FY 14 SWE Secretary helping to run meetings and publish the monthly newsletter,
5 and then as FY15 VP Internal running the mentor-mentee program pairing upper to lower division students and ensuring smooth relations. She was engaged in the UC San Diego Divergent Engineering Club, running the Solar Power team of the 7-person Aquaponics Project. Currently serving as one of the two FY17 SWE-SD Section Representatives, Jacqueline is a voting member representing our Section on the Region B Council on Society business. Her goal is to not only gain a better insight into how the Society functions, but to give back and help build a better section. She wants to use her collegiate to professional experiences to get more folks engaged and involved in section leadership roles. Jacqueline earned a BS in Environmental Engineering from UC San Diego in June Today she is a full time Fiscal Assistant, supporting research grants in a temporary assignment at UC San Diego and provides part time CAD design for a local artist. Passionate about sustainability, she hopes to find a permanent position in the energy industry. In her free time, Jacqueline likes running, baking and graphic design. FY18 Treasurer Nominee Joan Fisher Joan Fisher s professional career started in 1982 after graduating from the University of Dayton. She retired in 2014 after 32 years in the aerospace business, working as a systems engineer on various program contracts for the US Navy and Air Force. Her SWE career started as a collegiate member at the University of Dayton, then as a professional member in She was secretary for the SWE Tucson section. After moving back to San Diego in 1999, she joined SWE San Diego and served as secretary, president, then section rep for several years before applying for and becoming a leadership coach with the society Leadership Coaching Committee in She is currently the LCC coach assigned to Region B and also active in SWE-SD s outreach programs, including position of co-director of SWEET.
6 FY18 Section Representative Nominee Laura Hershberger Year Award. Laura is an active member of the SWE-SD Professional Section and has served as the FY12-FY14 Membership Services Committee Director, FY15 Vice President, FY16 President, and is currently the FY17 President. Additionally, she won the FY16 SWE-SD Member of the During her two years as President, Laura has demonstrated strong leadership capability. She has made countless contributions to the betterment of the section and her passion for SWE is evident in all her actions. Her vision, leadership and exceptional organizational skills has allowed for a very smoothly run section for the past two years. In addition, as the first director of the newly formed Membership Services Committee in FY12, Laura established the entire committee structure to support new member recruitment, networking events (networking luncheons and social events), community outreach events (Winter Gift Drive) and professional development events (technical tours, speaker series). She has paved the way for the committee to meet its goals by establishing these annual events that cater to varying members' interests and involvement. With her plethora of past leadership experience, and current role as President, Laura is more than familiar with the duties and needs of section representative. She has directly lead the section board and committee directors for the past two years and is well prepared to represent the section at the Society level. She is an effective communicator and highly organized. Her desire to see the section grow and provide continued guidance to the leadership make her well prepared for the role of FY18 section representative.
7 Other leadership qualifications include serving on her company s employee committee and managing her company s intern program. Additionally, Laura has successfully encouraged her company to donate a SWE-San Diego named scholarship for the past six years. Laura graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelors and masters in aerospace engineering in 2008 and 2010, respectively. She is currently a project engineer at Quartus Engineering and enjoys working on a wide variety of projects from airplanes to rocket ships and everything in between. FY18 Alternative Section Representative Nominee Harmonie Edelson Harmonie is an active member of the SWE-SD Professional Section, is currently serving her second term as Vice President (FY16 and FY17) and previously served as the FY15 Membership Services Committee Director. Harmonie transitioned to the professional section after serving as the SWE University of San Diego Collegiate Section President for two years and as Inter-Club Council Representative prior to that. During her time as a collegiate member, she helped to grow the chapter by engaging members through both outreach and professional development activities/events. As FY17 Vice President, Harmonie provided mentorship to the various committees and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Additionally, she helped keep track of action items and supported the position of President. Harmonie brings fresh insight and leadership to the monthly Board meetings and always shows a unique and creative problem-solving ability. Her enthusiasm and fresh ideas are constantly commented on by her peers. These are just a few of the reasons Harmonie is a great nomination to the position of Alternate Section Representative for FY18. She is interested in providing guidance and feedback to the newer members of the various committees while also learning more about the
8 Society and ensuring a smooth transition away from Regional leadership. Harmonie graduated from the University of San Diego with a dual degree BS/BA in Industrial & Systems Engineering Major and a minor in Mathematics in May She started working for Thermo Fisher Scientific (formerly Life Technologies) in July 2014 in the Global Operations Leadership Development Program. In August 2016, Harmonie started a new role at Illumina as an Industrial Engineer supporting Consumables Manufacturing for Sequencing and Microarray technologies. She is now transitioning into a Value Stream Manager position where she will provide cross-functional oversight across Operations, Supply Chain and Commercial functions for the Microarray business at Illumina.
