We have held two of our signature events the Alumni Hall of Fame inductions and the Intersection of Risk and Finance Symposium. Both provided students, alumni, faculty, and staff an opportunity to meet, learn from, and network with accomplished executives. Students also ventured off campus to participate in our unique Fall Corporate Visit Day and Mock Interview Week. Conducted with our corporate partners, these experiences provide students with invaluable business and professional development insights, as well as opportunities to connect with business leaders in CT and NY. Finance professor Susan Coleman s new book on the successful attributes and factors of women entrepreneurs, The Next Wave, is just one example. We are excited to launch new innovative programs. Our Summer Business Institute for rising high school juniors and seniors will be held on campus in July. Students will take a class from our professors, live in the dorms, make new friends in short, experience university life while earning three college credits. And our new Women of Barney organization brings alumni and graduate students together for networking and professional development. BARNEY SCHOOL LAUNCHES THE SUMMER BUSINESS INSTITUTE The Barney School will be launching its inaugural Summer Business Institute (SBI) in the summer of 2017.

Students will spend two weeks taking a business course, living on campus, meeting alumni and fostering friendships.

4 BARNEY SCHOOL LAUNCHES THE SUMMER BUSINESS INSTITUTE The Barney School will be launching its inaugural Summer Business Institute (SBI) in the summer of This program is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors. The SBI aims to help aspiring college students get an idea of what life as a business undergraduate will be like. Students will spend two weeks taking a business course, living on campus, meeting alumni and fostering friendships. At the completion of the program, the students will have earned three college credits which can be applied at the University of Hartford or transferred to other colleges and universities. During the program, students will be exposed to real life business classes with resident faculty and follow a unique syllabus tailored to the program and its objectives. Highly motivated and driven high school students who are seeking to major in business once they begin their university career can apply. BENNETT AND LIEB NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE BUSINESS HALL OF FAME On October 27, 2016, the Barney School of Business honored two distinguished alumni by inducting them into the Barney School Board of Visitors Alumni Hall of Fame. The inductees, Jonathan Bennett 88 and Mark Lieb 77, spoke to alumni, students, faculty and staff about their personal and professional challenges and successes. Bennett is Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategy, Property & Casualty and Group Benefits, at The Hartford Financial Services Group. Lieb is Founder, President, and CEO of Spectrum Asset Management. Bennett told the audience to remember, Success rarely happens by following a straight path. He encouraged students to remember the power of their thoughts, innovative ideas and education. Bennett also told students, There is no substitute for diligent preparation. Engaging in meaningful and rewarding work with colleagues that you enjoy, shared Bennett, are keys to being successful. He also reinforced the importance of education and a passion for lifelong learning, and described how his Barney School masters degree in accounting helped prepare him to flourish. Pictured from left to right: Adam Oresky, Tommasso Modguno, Mark Lieb, and Jonathan Bennett Lieb also described the transformational role the Barney School played in his life. Lieb credits his creating and managing the world s leading preferred securities investment firm to his MBA program at the Barney School and all who played a role in his education. When asked about the advice that he would give to the millennial generation Lieb said, They have to be focused on something and figure out what they want to do. Go look in the mirror, figure it out and go after it. The evening came to a close with the awarding of two student scholarships. Tommasso Modguno 17 and Adam Oresky 14, received Alumni Hall of Fame scholarships. These scholarships are awarded annually to two students who have displayed exemplary academics, leadership and drive in their time at the University, and who are also on similar career trajectories as the two Hall of Fame recipients. Like Bennett, Oresky studied accounting at the Barney School and is now working in corporate finance at United Technologies while earning his MBA at the Barney School. Currently a senior, Modugno is preparing to begin his career in investment banking, following in Lieb s path. Initiated in 2009, the Hall of Fame profiles the achievements of prominent alumni to provide a source of inspiration for students, alumni, faculty, and staff of the Barney School of Business. Bennett and Lieb are the 17th and 18th inductees.

5 SUSAN COLEMAN S NEW BOOK HELPS WOMEN SUCCEED IN BUSINESS Susan Coleman, Professor of Finance and Ansley Chair at the Barney School of Business is the co-author of the new book published by Stanford University Press titled The Next Wave: Financing Women s Growth-Oriented Firms. With co-author Alicia Robb, Senior Fellow with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Colorado, Boulder, The Next Wave is preceded by A Rising Tide: Financing Strategies for Women-Owned Firms. The Next Wave provides data-driven advice for women who are seeking to become entrepreneurs or are seeking to expand their businesses. According to Coleman Womenowned firms in our country grew by 27 percent compared to a growth rate of 2 percent for firms overall. But, in spite of their impressive growth in numbers, the business ventures women are launching today continue to lag behind those launched by men in terms of revenues and employment. As described in The Next Wave, there are three essential factors where women need to excel: knowledge, networks and investors. The book describes why these factors are so important and how women can develop them to become more successful. Over 150 Barney School Students Participate in Mock Interview Week and Corporate Visit Day Each semester, the Barney School of Business holds a Corporate Visit Day for students. Students meet alumni and their colleagues, see where they work, learn what they do, and become informed of internship and full time job opportunities. Corporate Visit Day provides students the opportunity to network and connect with professionals. A further benefit is the potential to be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments through their engagement during the visit and via their resumes that are submitted to the employers prior to their arrival. Many of these corporate visits lead to Barney School students landing internships and full time positions. Also offered each semester, the Barney School of Business encourages students to practice and enhance their interviewing skills by participating in Mock Interview Week. This event is essential to ensuring students feel prepared when they walk into an interview. In November 2016, 14 organizations participated with Barnum Financial Group and Menefee Associate Consulting LLC, holding the most mock interviews and contributing to the career readiness of Barney School students. hartford.edu/barney
